I've been wanting to post this for some time now but I just kept forgetting ^_^
For those of you who do magic or perform magic, what was your most interesting, funny, out of this world reaction from your audience that you've heard or encountered?
There was one time when a friend of mine did a transposition (i think) effect and then one of the laymen was a heckler and he said the most bizarre thing ever.
"Pshhh... I know how thats done! The explanation is so simple... that guys has telekinetic powers. THATS HOW HE DID IT!"
He said it in such a matter-of-fact tone that made it too funny!
There was another time when Kensei and another magician performed a coin trick to my grandmother (who was very very religious) during dinner time and my grandma said,
"You pray over your coins to perform magic?"
I was like O_o...... >.< NO! LoLs!
So I'm pretty sure that some of you might have had hilarious experiences with your laypeople's reaction to magic. Do share it here so we can all laugh about it ^_^
cheers!

What about yesterday??? me showing magic to your family?
-
Which was the exact reason why I really remembered to post this topic! I really want to hear other people's experiences with laymen's reaction to magic
-
What about yesterday??? me showing magic to your family?
I was gonna say something about that... Justin Bieber performing magic live on skype. :P

Yes, Yes. Her family called me Justin Bieber. Don't know why though!! :P

I think the weirdest I've had was when I was performing street magic and one guy literally just didn't say anything just slowly backed away at the end of the trick then ended up running away.
One of the best reactions for me was from one of these really annoying guys who think they know how everything is done, and I was performing a mentalism piece where they write a name of a loved one on a business card and I figure out who it is. So this guy as soon as I turned around after they wrote it said "Oh I know how this is done" so I basically just ignored him then it gets to the end of the trick and I tell them the name he just goes "Holy hell how did you do that?" I was so proud in my mind :P

when i was a kid i performed my own version of misled
(afair the same idea timothy wenk had in the first place)
to an old man in a bar.
well....when the pencil penetrated the bill the old man slapped me in the face.
i went on and restored the billl...the old man then broke out in laughter
and was glad that his bill was fine.
a few years ago i sat next to a guy and without even telling him
"look what i can do"
i let just casually float a cigarette in my hand.
and he went f****n bonkers and accused me of being with the dark side and stuff.
very weird.

Don't you see anything wrong here? ::)
-
I don't, I go into bars with my parents, but I'm not to go near the bar itself. but your allowed to work around the tabled area.

ähm no? ...it was midday, i played pool there and had a meal with my mum.

I did a 3 card monte routine with 2 black aces and the ace of diamonds. 3rd time round (after they guessed wrong twice), I switched the AOD for AO Hearts... nobody noticed and I actually had to point it out. Then they were like 'Hey, right enough! How'd you do that?!"
-
Hahaha! those are pretty interesting stories! I loved the one when the guy slapped @trasher on the face for tearing his bill. hahahha! Priceless!!!!!!!
Come on guys! Tell more stories! I'll try to remember mine.
-
I've had a few interesting reactions, people who thought they knew how I did it until the last moment - it's fun pulling the rug out from under them. I don't get too many freaked-out people to the point that they run away, but then again, I live in New York...
I had my two favorite trick reactions happen in the same day at the hospital, I wrote about them in the letter E published on their blog. One little boy, after I performed a simple set and left him a deck of cards, told me I made him feel better. Shortly after that, I performed a few tricks for a teenage girl while her mom watched, and she said I was able to do something that no one in the hospital or her family was able to accomplish in the past three days - I made her smile.
That alone makes it worthwhile.

this is so pathetic but here goessss xD
i was doing some magic for my friends during school, and this guy i liked happened to be walking by and stopped to watch. So i did a few with him, and he was all impressed or whatever, and right after the last one he looked me dead in the eyes and was like "marry me."
i was like bro pleasssseee.
but on the inside i was like :o

I don't find that to be corny at all. In your shoes, I would have likely melted to the floor.
I performed magic for a blind date I met back in July. We're engaged now... :))
-
Back when I was a real novice my sophemore year in high school, I made a card go through a window. Because I performed it so arragantly, one of the guys felt like a fool and was like:
Spectator: You think yous efen David Blaine? I'd Ef you up if you make me feel like a fool, B*
(edited for cleansiness)
My favorite positive reaction was when I performed 3d rabbits for this one group of people at a park.
At they end everone was screaming, and the gal who had the rabbits in here hand was like:
"Oh my gawd! The rabbits did it in my hand!"
-
Do you have to buy that card though window trick? if so, where do i get it?
-
A couple years ago, I got kicked in the shin by a 5 year old girl. She then proceeded to shout "HE'S THE DEVIL!", then sprinted off...that's when I realized that I love my job. :-[
-

I think there are a lot of youtube videos on how it's done.
But a person can buy ultimate card through window, which I DO NOT reccomend to the serious magician. It teaches the basic version that david blaine did on tv as well as some other ways to do it, but they are not that practical in the real impromptu world. It's ideas are cool but the explanations were pretty hokey!

For Valentine's Day she's getting me two of the DiFatta Bicycle Rainbow decks. That to me was very sweet.
But back on topic...
Brandon mentioned a little kid calling him a devil! I actually have a full-grown adult co-worker in his forties or fifties who does the same thing when I perform for him, minus the shin-kicking. Let's just say he isn't the sharpest pencil in the pencil box that is the staff I work with... I'm so glad I work overnight shifts; fewer people to deal with.
-
Hmm being called the devil seems to be popular for magicians :P I to have been called it seems to be their only guess when they can't work something out and get mad about it
-

...or they just want to yank your chain a little bit... :)
But yeah, the reactions of people trying to work out the trick but totally failing can be precious in their own ways.
-
Ive had a few funny reactions with the tricks ive performed....
Generally i perform james galea's 673 King street thats on another thread about bill malone's sam the bellhop - i get a great reaction when the 'What the hell' card appears.
Also one of my good friends who i perform very rarely too always gives good reactions he just like blinks in disbelief and goes 'LUCY!!!! COME HERE Joels DOING WEIRD STUFF WITH CARDS AGAIN' lol
-
Mine's pretty boring. I guess the best ones I was able to muster was when a heckler was dissing me while I performed the arm twister with the jacket on. So I took off my jacket and did disjointed he had this really priceless dumbstruck look on his face. :P
-
Mine is almost always the same thing when I perform on rare occasions. (i hate performing magic because I'm afraid that I might make a mistake and reveal how the trick is done so yeah) Anyway, its the same old comment for me.
They always ask me if its black magic I'm dabbling in. I'm like >.>......
WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA! ***I.T.R. Floating cards***
they're like.... 0_0.........

LoL! I totally saw that coming. I would've if you didn't beat me to it. Hehehe... :P

Once I was in school (it was at recess) and I did a little routine to 3 of my friends. I ended with pressure and they were so amazed they cursed and cursed for like 10 minutes and couldn't stop staring at me like I was a God. It was so funny, it look as if they had been striked by lightning. And then... they got in trouble for cursing. :(

Yeah, you have to be careful about magic at school, even if it was recess. Done poorly, you look bad; done well, you cause a public disturbance!

I just got harry pottrolled. ^_^
I used to go to a Conservative Baptist school when I was younger. Although I didn't do magic there, I'm pretty sure they'd "cast the demon" out of me for conforming to the "dark arts" of the world.
Heck listening to Hillsong was considered bad in my school, what more magic tricks in which they would not be able to comprehend what it really is. ^_^
-
I think the best reaction was probably the first time I completed a magic trick successfully. I could feel my face kind of light up. I wish somebody had of video taped it. I've never really had any crazy audience reactions, but I also don't practice magic much.
-
I just got a better one. I was at summer camp 2 weeks ago and performed magic for a girl I likde, knowing that she also liked me back. I did an amazing trick, and we were all alone, and it was the perfect moment and we kissed <3 (I'm blushing right now).

What was the trick? Tell a story for us!

Yes do tell us what happened. I love "kilig-moments" how do you translate that to english?
I love "getting-butterflies-in-my-stomach Moments" LoL!

I don't really do tricks anymore, but when I'm practicing flourishing in class I've had kids flip out. Its really funny when I have a deck out and one of my friends try's to describe which flourish they want me to do.

I'm not sure if I should say more than this because it would ruin the secret.... sry

There are a lot of people in my country ask me that can I be tell their fortunes using cards.
I really don't understand them.
Don't they realized that magician is not a fortune teller. T-T

So I did not want to make a new thread so I searched for this. I was out for dinner tonight with friends and as always I played around with my card when I waited for food and when done eating. The waitress asked if I did card tricks, I did one of my better mentalism tricks that uses cards. ended up with her getting all her co-workers to come over and watch. A guy who was working (unsure if a waiter or manager) walked but and told me to "get some booty" made my night. :) and I will be going back :)

Some mentalism is practically custom tailored for attracting members of the opposite sex! I like the "Do As I Do" two-deck trick, personally - it helped me win over my wife!
-
I performed a 2 card monte at my friends youth group. I was pretty much surrounded by everyone, was fairly nervous about angles, but was confident enough in myself considering the downtime I spent away from magic. At the start of the trick and showing the first ace to my audience member, he said, "I know how this ones done," however when I gave him the ace and allowed him to turn it around, his face went blank and he said, "Oh..." So anywhoo, I did the trick, got a great reaction from everyone. Some called me the devil, some ran outside, someone patted me on the back, and overall it was an awesome reaction.

After an emotional break up I went to the strip club. I was pulled in the private lap dance room.
The stripper asked how much I had, I pulled out $100 in twenties, and then with a flick I changed them to ones and told her I only had 5 dollars. She was mind-fucked and got pissed off. It was hilarious.

So, were they able to extract the bouncer's boot from inside your ass? :))
-
Once performed the snap change with a mother and her newborn watching. The baby stared at me for about 2 seconds and started laughing.
-
I did a trick that works better with drunks. It looks good except card is a heart when it was a diamond. She told me you must have done it like this, and then was like "well no I guess that would not have worked" So I went with her on that, that was not how I did it. So awesome.

Performing for drunks can have its pluses and minuses. The more drunk they get, the less risk that a mid-trick fumble will even be noticed, but the more likely they are to mess up your cards due to lack of coordination - or vomiting...
I get a lot of very awesome reactions when I perform in the hospital. A week-and-a-half ago, I was performing for this one woman, a young doctor in the pediatric ER. She was trying to mess up my trick, moving an extra card to the bottom of the deck to cover a key card I would later use to find her card. I was sharp enough to notice and adjust for the extra card, thus finding her card and impressing myself nearly as much as I did her.
My favorite reactions are when the kids say they feel better after I've performed for them, or when the parents tell me that I made their kid smile for the first time in a good while. Moments like that make the time spent worthwhile.
-
I normally stay away from drunks for that exact reason, but she had just enough it blurred her thoughts a bit.
-
I also get a kick out of how some people will see a trick performed for them, then remember it in a much more fantastic manner than it was actually performed! It's as if their own mind is rewriting their memory, it got so blown away by the performance! They would describe the trick after I'd performed it in a way that made it seem as if I was some sort of miracle worker, using methods I never used... :))
