"Hey everyone,

Now that the artwork for the Actuators is done and at USPC, I am looking into the B&W variation that so many of you have been asking about. I need some input on which you think is the better route to go with these: A lighter more grid-like feel or stark contrast indicating depth,. I think I will still employ the metallic inks for the gears but I definitely want to hear what you all have to say about that as well."

Definitely not

I meant like how the white Seasons deck has a small bit of gold in the middle.

@Ez: I think he was talking about adding color like the Seasons deck, not that the design looks like the Seasons (it doesn't).

Kinda like the white Seasons deck?

Actually, I meant saturating the grays just the tiniest bit like on the DeckOne (they're tinted blue to look more industrial).

The piping or what ever those are in the white ones just seem too busy for me.  I like the black ones because the black w/ white border and the gray pipes (don't what they actually are) in my opinion look a little nicer.  But i'd gladly use the white ones too.

But I don't like the brown one at all.

I think the black one is much better, actually.  Imagining holding them in my hands, I prefer the darker style for it's added contrast.  I also thing the background behind the cogs (circuit diagram/blueprint thing) looks very bare in the white version; kinda under-designed.

Aren't you guys getting a little bored with seeing black decks come out though? I mean, look at your collections...what is the dominant color? Either way, I think he is leaning towards putting them both out!

Hello Everyone,

Due to overwhelming support and demand I have decided to create both versions of the Black and White Actuators! There is a Kickstarter and it is going live in 3....2....1....

Personally, I think I will be sticking with the two original Actuator decks that I have ordered from Lance. I like the fact there is so much color in it, varies it from many of the other decks on the market. I am sure his black and white versions will reach the goal easily, but they are just not for me.

I'm really confusing with the pledges there.
He didn't specify how much is 1 deck cost, and how much international shipping cost.
How many should i pledge if I want 1 each.

You need to take the $13 option .. twice.
$26 for 2 decks (international shipping included)

Can't international buyer choose the $7 one to get special prize?
And add the shipping cost.

International shipping is 15.95, the 200 person
 international option is better.

EDIT:

I'f you have any questions and don't want to back the project until you get that question answered/ hasn't backed yet and have any questions ask me, i have a direct connection to Mr. Miller where i can ask him questions, if the question is something I can answer i will but if i need to go to lance i shall.

It's written right on the site.

It is not hard to understand.  If you are international, you should pick the international options.

Have to say I'm not bored with black and white just yet. While I do like to see colorful decks, I lost my interest for the Actuators design when colors were added.

At first, I thought I liked the white one better, but as I kept comparing them, I found that I actually like the black ones better. While the white ones are cool and all, I like the black ones because they have more depth. I feel like I'm looking inside of a playing card at it's gears to see how it works.

I'm sorry are you correcting me? Because you must purchase a brick of cards to get the custom brick box, which is what the question asks.

I just quote what  Good@Sabacc said.
Didn't mean to offend you. Sorry.

Correct.  You WILL NOT be able to purchase the brick boxes by themselves.

I wish I had the extra cash to buy a brick of each...

Maybe it's just because I don't collect decks in brick boxes, but I still don't understand their allure. I have the custom v6 boxes and they're flimsy, useless, and a pain to store. Same with the Variety Boxes.

Lance's actually looks pretty sweet, but to me I'd rather have the cards be on display because when someone visits my home they won't know what the brick box is, and its shape doesn't make for easy showcasing.

I guess the allure for me is because I'm mostly a Bicycle collector.  As far as I know, these are the first custom "Bicycle" branded brick boxes.. and I'd love to have a set.

Can't justify 36 decks to get it though

36? Wow that's 3 boxes?
You can just style at 24decks to get 2 boxes. Why 3?

@CBJ - heck, why not just ONE box.  Hold a full brick in it, maybe order a pack or two to play with.  Keep that up and you're going to need a much bigger place to live, like perhaps a small warehouse...

I really want all 3 custom brick boxes... so I'd have to order 12 of each deck to get them.

I don't think I'll swing it.. but you never know ;)

Well, I wish I could have got these, but I would rather have my E stuff. The good thing is that Lance T. Miller said he will be creating a new deck if he hasn't started yet I forget it's been about 2-3 weeks, but he said he was going to make another deck that was going to be awesome. If I remember corrector, but I will probably pick up some of those if they look good. Cause then I will have money to get them.

I see.  Costly hobby, this is.  :)

I'm down for two black and two white.  Gotta be careful about managing my bucks for the start of the month.  By the end, though, I'll have more than enough - I get HUGE $$ in tips this time of year.  The fact that most of it is going to the IRS, the State tax department, Visa and Mastercard doesn't damper that happy feeling one bit....   (snif...)  I screwed up my taxes last year by failing to properly account for the taxes not being deducted from the alimony I was receiving.

Lance Miller write via Kickstarter

"
Hello Everyone,
This Kickstarter update stream on this project has remained pretty quiet because most of the updates were being made over on the Artist's Edition Actuators main Kickstarter page here:http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lancetmiller/lance-millers-new-steampunk-playing-card-deck/posts (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lancetmiller/lance-millers-new-steampunk-playing-card-deck/posts)

Anyway, A lot of people asked to see the variation of colors based on the editions. I went through the artist mindset of "Think of a really cool way to show the variations complete with diagrams, explanations... etc. in a really neat graphic presentation." Yeah, I'm not perfect. Well after hours of messing around with all kinds of different presentation ideas, I finally brought myself back down to earth and said K.I.S.S. Keep it Simple Stupid! I was over-complicating things and not showing you guys what you've been longing to see.

The idea in the variants, while subtle, is to allow the decks to stand together as a series, yet have some individual personality. The White Edition faces are lighter and more subdued, The Artist's Edition are my preferred representation of the artistic point of the deck, and the Black Edition is bold, dark, and full of contrast.

As always, comments, feedback and suggestions are not only welcome, but encouraged. Thank you all for your support on this version of the project and the Artist's Edition Actuators.
- Lance"

I like the variations in color between decks.  Somehow, though, I feel like this could have been something more.  I read PoundFFFFFF's article on design and I think he hit the nail on the head with this one.

I am down with the black and white decks for sure. But with the revealing of the new queens...I am a tad disappointed. There is not enough there to make them stand out from the originals. At just a quick glance it looks like the same card sitting next to each other. I would like to see a true black and white here without the yellows.
Title: Re: Bicycle Actuators Black edition and White edition
Post by: CBJ on December 01, 2011, 08:25:05 PM
Lance writes on UC:

For those that are asking, here is a version that is literally blacks, whites, and greys. I made these variations first but I felt that it needed some of the yellows and browns to tie it back to the original deck...

What do you guys think?

I vote to leave out the color. The black and white backs with a colored face throws it off for me. But at least we have a chance to add this input....I wish Merz would have let us add input on the trace decks! ;D

Honestly I like the color. The pictures without the color makes the deck look more like all the other black and white decks, while the color adds a new refreshing twist. :)

I think the color is more beautiful, but when I imagine the back and face of the card together, I vote for the black&white version.

Black and white has more contrast, and would look cool with some silver metallic ink.  But it would look a little boring, I guess.  At least there's a little difference between the decks besides the backs.

Hello Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that I've been here the whole time this thread has been going on, but as a courtesy to my good friend Alex I did not want to be over here advertising while he and I both had decks on Kickstarter. You guys are a great community and I appreciate all of your honest and forthwith comments. I would like to send out a special thanks to CBJ, and John Sobczyk for relaying your questions and concerns. Also, they were integral parts in the live sessions for providing thoughts and input.

Thanks guys!

Now onto business, since the recent posts of the Monochrome backs and the Slightly colored variants have not yet hit the mark, I am tweaking the designs and colors so make sure to voice your opinions and be heard! As a point of note here, I take all suggestions and critiques seriously and while I may not use all of them on this deck, you could very well be giving input into an upcoming project.

Hey Lance, good to see you here.

My personal opinion is that the pure black & white version is better than the "colored" version of the B&W decks. I agree with what some have said about maybe leaving the pips & indices colored, but that's it. I know maintaining browns and golds is an integral part of Steampunk, but I don't think these decks should cater to the Steampunk style exclusively. The Artist's edition accomplished that, and these decks are purely for those that want some color variations.

EDIT: I don't usually read the long threads, but I just read this one and I don't think the question comes down to "Vortex or Actuators?" for anyone really interested in both. Honestly, if you ask me, I would rather have three of both decks than six of one.

Either way guys, remember that when you pledge you get more than some sweet swag, you also get the benefit of helping an artist realize their dreams.  :)

I look forward to adding these decks to my collection!

I was more than happy to help you out during this campaign, and you can't count on me to help you out during your next one!

One quick question.. only because I know it will come up.

Where will people be able to purchase your decks after the Kickstarter campaign?

All the best

Hello Everyone,

Great News! USPCC emailed yesterday and said that the Black and White Edition cards will be printed the week of August 6th and will ship within the following 2-3 weeks!!!

So, now that we have an official timeline, I will begin releasing details and trailers for the effects that come with the decks. Make sure to pay particular attention to my Facebook page: http://facebook.com/lancemillerdecks and the main Kickstarter project update thread for more info.

With regard to the surveys, I have received many of them ~ including your personal / direct emails. Don't lose heart if I have not responded to you (yet). I have easily received 4x more emails directly related to this project than any other. I will make sure that every backer gets exactly what they paid for and will be contacting you soon if I have not done so already. If you have not filled out your survey yet, I really need you to do so. My ability to get these out to everyone in a timely manner hinges on having an excellent logistics response and unfortunately, Kickstarter does not let me contact a backer directly unless they have messaged me or filled out a survey first.

Thank you all for your kindness and patience whilst this project has come to reality. I want to let you all know that I have been working with USPCC very closely to learn their methodologies and project management policies so that we never have a 6-7 month (public) wait time on any projects moving forward. You all have my personal guarantee that I will do everything in my power to ensure timely and most cost effective delivery of new products in subsequent endeavors.

Most Humble Regards,

Lance T. Miller

P.S. Sorry for the radio silence for a bit. Things have been super crazy! Photo Shoots, Video Shoots, Summer Travel, New Artwork... etc :D

As the topic says, Lance's follow up to the Artist Edition Actuators are almost here. The black and white editions are being printed this week. I spoke with Lance today and found out that the pre-sale has knocked out most of these decks, however, there are a few left for purchase.

Typically, there isn't much special when it comes to color variations. This is an acception. The amount of detail and time put into these decks shines through triumphantly. There is real depth to the artwork, making both these decks worth owning. Lance has yet to strike out in any aspect.

Every deck Lance has put out has been phenomenal. That being said, he is already over 70 hours deep into the design of the next deck.

Until then, do yourself a favor and snag a couple of these before the resellers get you

This trick looks very visual yet simple. Wow! Do both the black and white deck have the same gimmick but with inversed colors or do they have another gimmick, different, just like this one is different from the Artist Edition?
