Title: Lucent Playing Cards by Sean Whelan
Post by: SeanWhelan on November 14, 2012, 09:00:32 PM
Hey Guys!
First off I apologize for not really being active on the boards. I do however visit everyday to check the post and see whats going on in the playing card community. I just don't have the time to respond back as often as I would like.

As most of you know I am the creator/designer behind the Galvanic deck that launch on Kickstarter a few months back. I have plans on releasing a sequel to that deck call Surge and will be the counter part to the storyline. However, do the amount of work is involved in the trailer (yes there will be a 5 min 3d animated trailer that shows and explains who the Galvanics are, how the Surges were created and what will come of the future : D ) I have chosen to release a whole new deck before hand. The Surge will be released early in the year.

Now Lucent is a whole new deck on its own. No storyline attached, just good old fashioned design. I have plans to hit Kickstarter some time next month after I talk to uspcc.

Here are some images to show you what I've been working on and would love some feedback!

Here is some answers to your questions:
- fully custom deck (pips, back, ace, joker, tuck etc etc)
- WILL be a Bicycle deck (however if I get enough feedback and pledged It will be a deck of cards all on its own)
- 2500 deck print run
- Magic Finish and Aristocrat Stock
- Amazing rewards that have never been done before on a playing card deck : D

reminds me of the vision deck. Have any more pics? I am interested. Also any gaffs? can I suggested on 2 patterned double back? I want more decks with them. Also you should get it branded by bicycle. I believe it would attract more buyers then if its by its self.

Wow, this looks cool. The only feedback I would have is to increase the size of that center design (The one that kind of looks like a spine) just enough to fill a bit of that negative space.

I actually like it as thin as it it. I feel you should keep it that way.

One of my favorite decks was the Bicycle Limited Edition Series #1.  What made it so cool was all the negative space and fine lines.

what do you mean by negative space? I am unsure on what that is.

Blank areas with nothing drawn in them.

ok, I actually love the negative space on this back. Always more room to see signatures  for those kind of tricks and I am going to be getting into them.

Thank you so much everyone for the positive and honest feedback.

I wanted to go with a simple yet elegant style with this deck and I hope I proved it with the ace as well as the back design. I would love this deck to have a white border.

Now a question for you guys: I plan to do something no ones done yet with a playing card project and I hope this will be a successful one.

How many of you would be interested in pledging for a necklace charm?

Actually, Bicycle War of Currents had pendants as part of their plethora of rewards.  But it's pretty sharp-looking nonetheless.  You can lay claim to the first deck project with a suit-themed pendant - the WoC pendants were symbols representing Edison's and Tesla's approach to electricity.

On a second look, straighten out the "legs" of the bottom section of the spade.  With one longer than the other it almost looks like a very fancy, pear-shaped "Q".

Oh, I wasn't talking about ELIMINATING the negative space. I love it. I just thought you could widen that neat spinal design down and out just a bit. It would provide some great textural contrast with the rest of the design.

After reading everyone's feedback on the back design, I went back and I went back and tried to accommodate for everyone's needs. Here is the updated design WITH corner designers for flourishes and filled the negative space on the sides. Let me know how you guys feel about this. The initial design in there but with your help I gave you what you wanted.

Updated design can be viewed on the Facebook page! (File is too big for most forum uploads)

I agree on the corners - those are improvements.  But I preferred the additional negative space on the sides.  I even liked emptier corners, truth be told, but I'm also aware that it would make for some boring fans.

Hey Don,
Yeah I submitted to get approved days ago yet haven't received the go ahead. I know everythings fine but it just kills me because its taking longer than the Galvanics.

Everyone can look at the latest designs on the Facebook page though!

Its official: Lucent Playing Cards will go live on Kickstarter tonight at 7PM Eastern Time! Early bird specials will be available for those who pre-order first! Spread the word!

I do apologize for the wait though. It took a little longer for Kickstarter to approve for some reason. But everything is on track now!

I'm really looking forward to this deck. I worked very hard on this project and cannot wait to see the outcome.

Thank you everyone!

Sean, is KS letting you skate on the "10 bricks" pledge?  That's a whopper - they've been limiting other deck projects to not more than a dozen decks - only one brick.
