Mojo (named from X-Men) and Turbo (I talk too fast) together means "Fast Magic"

My steamboats are opened as are ALL my decks. I play with my cards. :D

I could be wrong since I don't have a deck in front of me to look at, but I believe the 2009 reprint edition had all the copyright information on the bottom, including the year and city of manufacture.  The Dan and Dave version has their logo, embossing and a 2012 copyright - they were probably printed in 2012 but not cut and shipped until early 2013.

Other than that, yes, you would have to use the Ace of Spades letter code to get an approximate date of manufacture.  There's more on that subject in the "Fact or Fiction" topic at the top of the Playing Card Plethora board.

When dating your cards, take everything into account - what kind of deck seal was used, the approximate age based on the cards' condition (even unopened decks from many years back will have a small amount of yellowing to them) as well as that of the box (and cellophane, if it is so wrapped), etc.  For example, a tax stamp marked "1 PACK" would give it a manufacture date between 1940 and 1965.  From 1965 into sometime around the early 1980s, they used the company "Spade" stamp, complete with perforations on the edges.  After that, sticker seals were used - and you can sometimes make some conclusions based on the color of the seal, whether the white border has become transparent with age, etc.  It was also around the 1980s that USPC began printing UPC barcodes on the boxes.  Older decks also won't have a cellophane wrapper - the company instead wrapped the cards inside the box with vellum sheets, sealing the paper with a wax seal of the company logo.

The "Z" indicates it was made in either 1979 or 1999 (I doubt it's older than that!).  If it has a USPC stamp seal (looks and works like an old school postage stamp, complete with perforated edges), that would make it a '79, while a sticker seal (same type used today, probably in either blue or red) would make it a '99.  The next-earlier possible year would be '59, and that would have a "1 PACK" US Internal Revenue tax stamp.

If there's no seal, it probably had a stamp seal on it - they dry out over time and tend to fall off, sometimes leaving glue residue, sometimes not.  The sticker seals don't come off so easily.

So, what kind of seal, bro?  The world wants to know!  :))

Well, I was born in 1968, so I am pretty sure that I didn't buy a deck of cards when I was 10. (jk) I'm going to have to say it was from 1999 then, cause this was one of my first decks and back then.... I wasn't careful with the seal. Because it's gone.

Depending on how busy that store was, it's not impossible that you got an old deck.  Sticker seals don't just fall off.  Stamp seals do.  Unless you happen to be a "peeler", it might be a '79.

BUT...  You did say it was barcoded!  So no, you're a peeler and it's a '99!  Barcodes on decks came around in the '80s.

ha ha, well that's the thing....I guess my biggest problem is in my massive collection. In my younger feeverish days, I amassed a canon of videos and books, skimmed em for a few good tricks and then went on to the next big thing. I have been doing that since I started, always feeling the effect of "not having the best" and wanting more. I am such a victim of advertising.

Now, at 44, I turn and look back at this HUGE pile and think. There is several lifetimes of magic in there. I don't need to go forward, I need to go back. So I am just now beginning to take it all in and ask that EXACT question. WHERE?

The truth is, I don't refer back to any of them. I buy and I move forward....it's a ridiculous thing. More than the latest trick, I need direction, I need a map, you know?

A good place to start would be learning basic building blocks.  A lot of what you have are either individual gimmicks or a small selection of tricks, but not as much groundwork.

Good places to start - both in your collection and not...

Card College (both the numbered series and the "Light" series - "Light/-er/-est" are all card work with zero sleight of hand.)
Ammar's "Easy to Master" series - fun classic tricks with some fundamentals.
Basic Card Technique, by Richard Kaufman (Meir Yedid Magic, mymagic.com)
Royal Road to Card Magic
Expert at the Card Table

You go back and read/watch these start to finish, you'll have some kind of firm foundation on which to stand.  Then you go crazy looking for the wicked-cool gimmicky effects.  I'm in a similar situation to you - have lots of instruction material (nowhere near as much as you, though!), haven't done more than skim most of it.  It's why I've basically stopped buying magic until I get through what I have.

Got my 3 from Theory 11 yesterday, the Love deck (for my wife, so I don't get to play with it - review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD2CD4KPHOI) I bought the Charity Water deck (review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUUeFtsHy2g) and the Rebel deck (review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuonKReWWh4) . But now that I have the rebels, I am kind feeling buyer remorse, I have no idea why didn't get the Artisans instead? It's a much cooler deck. Ah well.

I noticed that the Legends decks were sold out, so I quickly snagged a single deck off ebay (review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahvD6FiWyRo)

and a deck of White Lions while I was at it, to add to my Blaine collection.

I can tell that the deck on the left is a reproduction, but I don't think it was a D&D repro.  The one on the right is a genuine article Arrco deck.  The Ace of Spades codes are the giveaway.

The deck on the left was manufactured on the 12th week of 2011.  The deck on the right was made on the 48th week of 2006.  USPC in both cases, not Chicago made from the original Arrco factory - those are USPC codes.  Arrco was acquired by USPC in '87.  While most decks use a letter code in addition to the numbers, they've also started introducing longer codes or code variants.

For the deck on the left, "N" is the code used in 2011 (and a few other years as well, cycling in most cases about every twenty years), the numbering to the right has to do with some sort of inventory codes/manufacturing codes (much less important without access to the USPC database) and the four digits to the left of the "N" are the two-digit week number and two-digit year number of precisely when it was printed.  For some reason, the '06 deck left off the letter codes and other codes, going with just the week and year.  It's been known to happen - the codes are generally left off entirely for most custom deck orders and for decks that have "preprinted" faces, like most Congress decks.

In the case of a deck with preprinted faces, USPC will run off a large lot of playing card sheets, only printing the face side of the sheet, placing them in storage until the time comes that they need to complete the deck with a new back design, usually only requiring a portion of the stored sheets.  I believe they do this to save time - they print the faces during some slack time between other projects, then when they need more Congress cards and they have a new design to use for the back, they bust out the pre-printed sheets.  Preprinted sheets are also used, I believe, by Zazzle for their custom-made decks with USPC-licensed faces.  The end result quality is nothing like a real USPC deck, but it's cheap and easy.

I think you're right, if memory serves, their repro had each deck wrapped in silver foil? I got my repros (also a black and a green deck) on eBay. Wow Don once again, you are a verifiable cornucopia of information. Can you come over and go through my decks and tell me something about all of them? Ha ha.

The foil-wrapped decks came from Dealing Deuces.  He used it as a way to jack up the prices on his decks artificially.  His reputation took a serious hit when he tried selling "rare" Ace Fulton's decks that were foil-wrapped and had the deck logo on the foil.  D&D denied making any such version of the deck and people put two and two together and realized Dealing Deuces was trying to rip them off, using the bogus foil wrap as an excuse to jack up the price.  Most if not all of the prices at dealingdeuces.com are overinflated.  He was in here for a while as a contributing member until the Ace Fulton's fiasco, then he stopped posting altogether.

The board started off as a promotional vehicle for AetherCards, a now semi-defunct playing card company.  They released one design, the Vortex deck.  "Alex." owns AetherCards, this board and designed the Vortex deck.

Alex had a lot of headaches getting his deck made and distributed - so much that he dropped out of designing new decks altogether.  So this board remain his primary ongoing concern.  He's trying to separate the Discourse from AetherCards and has been considering creating a new domain for it without the AetherCards name.

A cardician is a magician whose speciality is card magic.  A cardist is an artist who performs magician-style card flourishes as a separate art form from magic - they're also known as card flourishers and "extreme card manipulators", or "XCMers".  That latter term is usually used only by De'vo vom Schattenreich and his fans/students.

Dan is once again UBER correct. As a magician I focus on cards (I can do kids party stuff) but for instance... I do not do coin magic AT ALL. Nor do I do little packet things that "look" like they came from a magic store.

Alchemist comes also in an Alchemist X (black deck) version, as well as being made in miniature in both color schemes without the Bicycle name on them.  Same for Phoenix, as far as the minis - all from Stephen Rook, if I remember correctly, and produced by Vincenzo DiFatta.

Distressed Expert comes in TWO versions.  The initial version is darker and has the wrong back on it, a very similar back called the Old Fan Back.  The corner images are printed on fans like the type someone would bring to church to stir up a breeze on their face.  The Expert back has the same corner images, but not on fans.

You want a Bicycle Gold Trace?  It's a clip-art deck!  I have yet to see a good-quality design come from Bill Merz (Merz67.com).

Karnival Assassins have come in three versions so far.  Original, foil tuck and now the new color.

There's two Magic-Con decks so far.  Last year's model was the second.  The one before that had a plainer blue and black box.

When you say "Phoenix (both of them)", are you referring to Bicycle Phoenix, or the Phoenix brand?  Aside from the miniature decks, Bicycle Phoenix only came in one version that I'm aware of.  Phoenix decks, though - there's quite a few, all from Card Shark (card-shark.de), some of which were made at USPC and some which were not.

"The 3 Bedecieved decks" are actually from BeDeceived, which was Collin Stover.  They are, in order, the Style Deck, the Mystery Deck and the Confidence Deck.  BeDeceived has since been folded by Collin so he can focus on Peachcrate Design.

"White Raiders" are just Raiders, and they also came in black.  They're tough to find these days - the producer, Magic Network, went out of business.

Now, what the heck is the "Wish List" deck?  :))

Nice case - never saw one like that before with the Kem name on it.  It could predate USPC's ownership of the brand.

As far as the deck, without better photos or the original box, it would be difficult to pin down the year.  They could be from '04 and heavily used, or from '64 and lightly used by comparison.  There are subtle differences, though, in how the court cards were designed throughout history, so a picture of the courts could help.

Yeah, those are dead-on modern.

I don't think they're from 2004 - I'm not sure when USPC adopted the practice of using a longer AoS code.  They're probably '84, with a slim chance of '64.  Again, having the box would make dating easier.  I doubt they're older than '64 because of the style of the indices - they looked different going further back than that.

wow, so many new decks as of late who can keep up.....

You know for me (and this is just me) I think when some people count their collection, they count every single deck and for a lot of collectors what I see is multiple copies of the same deck repeated. Like, if they get a brick of the same deck - they count that as "12" in their collection and not just "1" I get that.

But for me, having 12 blue rider backs and 13 reds, doesn't "count" as 25... it's just 2. You will probably open a lot of those, play with them, give some away - who knows.

I have 3 piles.

My collection - which is NO duplicates
My cards I play with - duplicates of what I have in my collection
and extra decks I am either going to sell or give away

So when I go to count... which someone asked me do - 503 - that is in my collection... that number is strictly single decks. No duplicates what so ever.

Not trying to brag, but when you count 503 decks, you want to put that number somewhere... so... I put it here.

Most people will break out the numbers separately, especially with larger collections.  For example, my collection is somewhere in the ballpark of 1,800 decks of which between 600-700 are unique designs and the rest are extras.  I've slowed my purchasing considerably - 1,800 decks doesn't fit very conveniently in the bottom of most closets and could fill perhaps two or more typical desks.  And that doesn't include the decks I've been donated for distribution to the children I perform for at the hospital - they're not mine, so they're not part of my collection.

Sports card collectors use a product nicknamed a "monster box" - it's a large, white box made of archival cardboard, devoid of any chemicals that will cause paper to break down over time.  Designed to hold 5,000 sports cards spread out over five columns, a monster box can hold 125 typical poker decks just fine.  I have perhaps a dozen of those, plus a special set of drawers I use for all my open decks - there are hundreds of them.  The drawers are nice - Staples sells them, they're modular and vertically interlocking and each single-high drawer holds 45 decks.  For weight-bearing purposes, you don't want to make any single drawer unit you create more than a dozen "drawers" high (some drawers are double-high and hold more), and you can forget about placing the caster wheels on the bottom - they're only going to break under the weight.  I have two such units, with some odds-and-ends storage boxes here and there.

The drawers are nearly 100% full.  The boxes are also nearly 100% full.  I can try a little better organization, but I'm not likely to get more than a few extra decks in there.  So I'm carrying roughly 540 decks per drawer unit ties two drawer units, plus 125 decks per monster box times 12 monster boxes, and that's over 2,200 decks - but some of that storage capacity is for donated decks, which is why I estimate my collection size at only 1,800+.  It actually might be a little higher, now that I look at the numbers...

I bet they could order them for you if you requested them.  It's more economical, though I'll grant that the smaller boxes do have more secure lids - a monster box has a "shoe box" lid on it.  Plus a max-loaded monster box isn't for the frail...
