Hi Everyone,
As some of you already know, my third papercut transformation deck has a circus theme.
The deck is called SAWDUST. In circuses of the past, sawdust was used for the floors of the rings, and I was inspired after watching Cecil B. DeMille's film, The Greatest Show on Earth.
"That's all, ladies and gentlemen, that's all. Come again to the greatest show on earth.
Bring the children. Bring the old folks. You can shake the sawdust off your feet, but you can't shake it outta your heart.
Come again, folks. The Greatest Show on Earth. Come again." - Midway Barker from The Greatest Show on Earth

Looking great, bro! Any idea on the release schedule for this one? (And Clipped Wings?)
-
Thanks Don! Sawdust won't be released until next year, but Clipped Wings will be released later this year (no specific date yet).
-
Wow, this deck is gonna look amazing!

Wow, this deck is gonna look amazing!
You should check out his first deck, the Curator deck, released through HOPC. They sold out of it weeks ago, but there's a number of after-market resellers carrying it. That would give you an excellent idea of the kind of work Emmanuel is capable of! :))

Yes, I saw it.. I was about to buy one when I saw it was out of stock.
Now I'll do some research to find a reseller that's still selling it :)

excellent work. I picked up on of the curator decks. :D I'm Def. looking forward to these. please keep us posted here as to when you plan on releasing this deck. It's sad to say but the art of paper and scissors is a dying form, But I'm glad it's alive and well in you. also a bit of trivia what other famous card man made a solid living as a silhouette artist? (more for the younger crowd, I'm sure you know this already don ;))

I'm just noting how fast they ran out.

Dai Vernon :)
I like to refer to him as "the greatest magician you never heard of" when talking to "civilians" about magic. The Professor actually didn't perform professionally - most of his performances were for friends, family and other magicians. He's best known as being a great teacher and innovator, despite doing it largely as a "hobby".

Don,
With all due respect, While I do agree with you on most the statements above I do believe he performed professionally for a while in his early days. check out this video. I stumbled across it the other day when i was looking for his cups and balls routine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeIBCLw4p8o
it's about 45 min long but if your a Vernon fan (who isn't) you may want to check it out.

I think I heard that as well. Primarily, though, he wasn't a practicing pro so much as he was an innovator and mentor. What I should have said was that he hardly practiced professionally, which would have been more accurate. I haven't read his full life story, but I find it astonishing that such a talented magician who could have easily been the David Blaine of his day didn't work as a full-on performer for more than a brief period - I'd think he could have made a decent living at it.

I do agree, he was known for his ability but more so for his knowledge and mentoring (i heard he knew expert at the card table by heart.) I believe given his chosen method of close up card magic (mainly) and some other close up routines he was unable to perform for huge crowds like Houdini or Thurston or other Performers of the day, without the aid of T.V. like we have now unfortunately his talent would go without notice to the majority of people, where as a stage magician could do a large venue he would be forced into smaller more intimate gatherings and therefor have less options to work as a magician. This is more of an opinion than fact mind you but hey it makes sense to me. ;)
LOL. I just realized don and i turned this thread about an amazing new deck of card's into a Vernon discussion. sorry guys.

I liked the curatordeck, but the images didnt relate so much to myself.
But these cards here just look amazing. Cant wait until next year...must have.

Thanks Magimago!

Emmanuel, I really love what you did with those courts. It's ingenious! I've never seen another deck with that integration of design.
I believe you're going to have another hit on your hands.
Speaking of hits - when's Clipped Wings coming out?

I hadn't noticed the interconnecting court characters until you mentioned that Don. That is very cool! Definitely some meticulous planning went into pulling that off, with cut paper no less!
Thanks, Randy
-
I know several people "with sawdust in their veins" who would completely lose their cool over this deck. (I'd better not mention it, or I won't hear the end of it until they're produced!)

Why so? It's not like the art is shabby or disrespectful.

Thank you Don, Randy! I enjoyed making diptychs and triptychs for art classes, and I thought I'd make a triptych for this deck. Clipped Wings will likely be released mid-year.

Soliloquy, I would love to know what they think of this deck!

Bro, that 2 of hearts animation is sick! Good work. If only the actual cards could do that!! :))
-
Thanks for sharing that animation, it was fascinating. So now I have a whole bunch of questions about your process :) How large are your images, and how on earth do you digitize them? I imagine you must have access to a large format scanner. Do the layers of paper cause artifacts you have to clean up digitally?
My sister (who also does some papercutting, though not on the same scale) would like to know what kind of paper you use. Thanks!

Thanks Don! I bet you in the not-so-far future there will be animated decks of cards, and they'll be full of Cthulhu-controlled zombies in steampunk attire :)

You're welcome Soliloquy! The cards are 24 inches tall, a little over 17 inches wide. I use Canson Bristol paper for the white and Canford papers for the black and red.
I don't own a large-format scanner, so I have the cards scanned at a local imaging company. I don't know how much digital cleaning is required, but the images are extremely high in resolution since layered paper is so crisp.

Since the originals are so large and are only printing at playing card size, digital artifacts probably aren't much of a problem for the imaging company. I always wondered what technique you used to get the cards digital. I always assumed you had a tripod setup to get a good overhead shot with a digital camera and edit it from there. I hope the I aging company isn't charging an arm-and-leg for the scans. They're definitely known for charging crazy amounts for large scan!
Thanks, Randy

I had considered digitizing from photographs, but it's extremely difficult to get the cards properly squared off and have uniform lighting. A photographer friend of mine referred me to the imaging company since he uses them all the time, and they do a pretty amazing job at very reasonable prices :)

I'm sure you've answered this a hundred times but, how long does it usually take you to make a single card?

I asked him that over breakfast when he visited New York. For Curator, he was working at a pace of a card a week. The experience he gained from that allowed him to speed the process up a bit. He's probably taking between three and five days a card now, depending on complexity.

I hate clowns, but I love the design of this deck. I did have a similar idea for the integration of design on the courts, but I don't think I would have pulled it off like this one does. Brilliant. Makes me want to purchase an uncut sheet. Maybe that's the point. I still hate clowns though.

Yeah, it takes me 1 to 5 days. The illustrated man I just posted took about 4 days.

Haha, thanks. I have several friends who are professional clowns and I have a deep respect for their craft. Clowns are the glue of the circus.

Seconded. If the only clowns you're familiar with are from It or the Simpsons, you're missing out on some awesome entertainers and people.

Unfortunately my dislike of clowns goes way back into the early 70s and visiting traveling circus'. But I'm surprised no one ever brings up the clown doll in Poltergeist, that's the one that sealed the deal. :) That being said, I watched a documentary on circus' and I understand a lot more than I ever did about circus performers and clowns and man thats a lot of hard work for very little money!!
-
Awesome details Emmanuel!
I've been looking at Psyanky Eggs so much that it's the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw the patterns on his arms and legs. The hidden Hearts at the armpits are really cool!
thanks, Randy
-
I never get tired of looking at your artwork Emmanuel. Lovely stuff, you've gotten better in the last few years(if that's possible).
I still take a gander at the Curator high-res scans once in a while, seeing the little imperfections in there is fascinating and refreshingly "tactile" in a world of so much digitalness.
-
Thank you Randy, Paul!
I've become a little more precise, but imperfections will always be present :)

Brilliant! Love the art, even if I hate circuses.

The six of spades and seven of hearts are my favorite but they all look so fantastic.
I'm sorry, but is this his second or third deck? I know about the curator one, but I must have missed one...

Good artistic touch on the cards!
I would really like it to have a little design on the sides though but still it looks wonderful!

It's been a while since anyone posted about this. How are the cards, Emmanuel? If I recall, you finished them in the fall of last year, right?

Hi Don, I finished the Sawdust deck on Dec. 31, 2013 with the completion of the back design (the week between Christmas and New Year's was insanely hectic, I almost thought the deck wouldn't be done). Here are the jokers and the back.

Emmanuel, that deck looks majestic. Your vision and skill is amazing. Do you have a release date for us?

That back is ingenious - love the work. The jokers - those are some MIGHTY thin borders. They won't be that thin when you go to press, will they?
-
Great work!!
-
That back is straight-up GORGEOUS. Can't wait to throw money in your general direction :D
-
Thank you everyone!
Emmanuel, that deck looks majestic. Your vision and skill is amazing. Do you have a release date for us?
I don't have a date yet, but I'm hoping to launch the Kickstarter campaign for Sawdust in late spring or summer of this year. I'll be launching the campaign for Clipped Wings first. I'm still planning that campaign and finalizing the details for shooting the campaign video in the next two weeks.

They won't be that thin, I'll make sure to scale the image down just a bit so it won't be a full bleed.
-
That back is BRILLIANT! This deck just keeps getting better and better!
Can't wait for the release!
-
Emmanuel - You have one deck done and another almost finished? Man. You killing people. Hit that wave! better get a good surf board....
