My "Play More Cards" kit came today. If you're in the 808 Club, be on the lookout for yours.
(It came with a brick of cards, score pads, pens, cups, coasters, window clings, chip clip, bottle openers, and poster.)
-
A Brick of cards? They are being quite generous. Are they 'Standards'?
I wonder whether international members of the 808 Club are being sent this. Would be great if we are, but I'm guessing the postage costs might be too high.... :-\
-
A brick of cards do seem a little high, but hey! I'm lovin' it! I can't wait to be receiving my package. All that...and more...for $20 a year is more than your money's worth.
-
a "spoiler alert" would have been nice.
-
A brick of what, though? A brick of Mavericks is worth negative dollars, for example.
If it's even as good as Bikes though, for $20 a year, the membership pays for itself. As long as it's not some weird poo-deck, kudos to USPCC for being badasses.
@See_squared: I added that into the title. :)

Geez - a friggin' BRICK! I'm really looking forward to checking my mail Wednesday afternoon! Mavericks would suck, but it's unlikely since they're a regional brand and USPC contracts out the work to a Chinese printer. Even if it's Streamlines, this is an excellent bonus.
Anyone who thought that this club wasn't worth it no longer has a leg to stand on.
-
Soon as I have the spare cash (hopefully next paycheck) I am hoping on the band wagon. It seems to get better and better.

So, if you're "hoping" on the bandwagon, does that mean that you're "hopping" to get the Play More Cards Day promo set? :))
I suspect you might be too late for that promo, but you never know - and there may be more down the road. It looks like USPC is being pretty generous with this club.
-
Aaaaand the regret just sunk in. I chose not to throw $20 to USPCC and look what I'm missing out on.... Well it seems to me that they're doing a great job giving bonuses to current members to draw in new ones. I think I shall pick up a membership as an early birthday present to myself for any future specials and giveaways!
-
A brick...wow! Based on their letter, I just assumed that it would be a single deck. I was happy just to get the 808 deck, and the ability to buy some possibly rarer (club only) decks for my club price. They didn't have to send a whole brick so if they are going this far to take care of members, I can't wait to see what's coming. The Griffin deck is really nice with all of the foil on the tuck.
I know that high-end designs take a lot of manpower to design, but I've always wondered why they didn't design some art-type decks (like many designers here and on KS do) and sell them for more than $3.99 or $5.99. I know that their main sales are to casinos, but they also make/sell a good many decks that aren't high volume. A custom designed deck, completely custom adn low printing numbers, could be a good seller for 808. That might be next though, the club has already exceeded my expectations. It's a nice change to get more than your money's worth from a large company!
-
So nobody knows what this supposed brick is? Hopefully it's not the Club 808 deck, lol. Hopefully someone can post more details or picture soon.
-
I'll post a pic tonight (of the brick, decks, and whole kit). It's a brick of standard face decks, with 6 red decks and 6 blue decks.
I forgot to mention it comes with stack of plastic cups too (edited my original post to correct that).
Sorry for not tagging the post with spoiler alert. I didn't know it was supposed to be a surprise, but then again, I keep up with my email. In mid January, they sent an email that said (in part):
Have you heard of Play More Cards Day? You, as a member of Club 808, get to participate like no one else. Play More Cards Day is the official Bicycle® Brand holiday, and it’s coming up on February 23. Because you’re a Club 808 member, you’re automatically considered one of our Bicycle® Brand ambassadors. This means that in the near future, we’re sending you a Play More Cards kit in the mail! This kit contains playing cards, a bottle opener, score cards, and much more to make your Play More Cards Day a hit.
-
thanks @Alex.
You're correct @PrincessTrouble, they did send us all an email telling us about this kit...they just didn't tell us when it would be arriving (although we can assume it would have been before the 23rd). I just thought it would be nice to come home to a surprise package at my doorstep after a long day...no worries, you're intentions were good.
-
Attached are some quick pics I snapped with my iPhone.
-
@don This thing just keeps getting better, so I dont care if I missed out, I am banking on better things later.
-
Just opened my kit as well. Words cant describe how happy I am to have purchased this membership. Money well spent! USPCC ROCKS!!!
-
I broke down and gave in. ;) I'm sure i wont get the brick but from the sounds of it there will be more to come...Hopefully. ;D
-
May I ask if this kit is only for people who joined last year or is it for every member please?
I have just joined the 808 Club on 1st Feb 2013 and have not got any email regarding this kit...
Does that mean I am missing out?
Could someone who recently joined kindly share their experience please?
Thank you! :)
-
I joined on the first day it was made available. I got the email being mentioned but it was in my spam folder. You might wanna check in there.
-
Sine the brick is to commemorate play more cards day, I'm sure that the intent is not to send out special cards that we will keep, but rather for us to be ambassadors for Bicycle and to give the cards away (since they didn't technically cost anything) to encourage others to put down electronic devices and rediscover and play more card games. More people interested in card games=more people interested in cards overall=more business for them, and more unique decks fir collectors/cardists/magicians due to an expanded pool of new buyers! To that note, I think that I will hand mine out at my office.
-
Another pic of the kit you get

They already create custom decks. They don't do limited editions (as in 5K or less) or higher prices because it would put them at a deeper competitive disadvantage. Playing cards are a commodity. Dollar stores sell super-cheap decks two-for-a-buck. They need to keep prices down because quality alone isn't always enough to sell a deck of cards - for those of you who are old enough to remember, look at the VCR wars; Beta from Sony was higher quality, but they licensed out VHS to other manufacturers who proceeded to make the players and the tapes cheaper than Sony was making their Beta machines.

It's entirely possible that you missed the window for getting in on this deal - only USPC could tell you for sure. Perhaps you'll get yours next year? Creating a specific date to be "Play More Cards Day" implies that they're going to make it an annual promotion.

I'll probably hand mine out at the hospital, perhaps give them the cups and such as well.

Just read a response on Bicycle's Facebook page that said as long as you sign for Club 808 up by Feb 18th (and live in the U.S. for guaranteed shipping by the end of the week) you will receive the Kit. I signed up on Feb 1 and have not received the kit yet, nor an email, but am hopeful to see it soon.
-
Did the kit come via USPS, or was it delivered by another carrier?
-
Ha! Mine just showed up! UPS

Nice, if that's true I made it in the window. :D I must ask, have you received you 808 deck yet, I'm wondering if they will just ship the whole thing to me (kit and 808 deck) since I'm so late in the game for the kit (and if what your saying is true).
-
Yes, Club 808 members will receive Play More Cards kits since the members are already some of our biggest fans. As long as they sign up by Feb. 18 (and live in the US for guaranteed shipping by the end of the week), they will receive kits. You can also sign up to receive a kit via the website (http://bicyclecards.com/rules) or through Freeroll Friday (check back the Facebook page tomorrow at noon). Hope that helps!
oh you guys made my day! So ordering this right now.... yea does the 808 deck come with?

is this offer only for people in US?
-
Really wish I still had my gaming shop.
This would have made a great sales promo.
For people who play cards regularly with the same group of people this is a really nice pack but I am not sure how it promotes Bicycle and playing cards.
Probably would work better for people who play at a bar or club with a rotating group of people and others that "just watch"
still way to go Bicycle actually making a "collectors" club worth it. The brick alone is worth more than the entry fee.
Not like some Black memberships that I wasted $150 on and am only likely to see $20 worth of material.
-
Really Utterfool? Glad to hear that, as I was about to pay for that E membership.
This one, Club 808, I'll definitely pay despite not being in the US.
-
Really Utterfool? Glad to hear that, as I was about to pay for that E membership.
Granted it is only February so they have time to make it up. But $150 is a lot to make up
And E promised early notification and special releases. So far everything they have released has been open to the general public (besides the Black artifice, and the snowboard... Yippeee!!!!)
and I have received notice of all releases when everyone else does. It could just be my curmudgeonly nature but E doesn't appear that they are going to put to much effort into their "club"
-
Yep, in confirmation, I did not see Bicycle's post of window date. I messaged them directly and they said as long as the order is placed by monday you are good. So I went ahead and placed another membership order. Standards are about $2.50/deck...so the brick alone is worth $30 where the membership is only $19. That is the brick alone, not even considering all the other goodies and the Club 808 deck.
Another reason why I went with another membership....how am I going to play beer pong with only 10 cups? lol
-
Ha! Mine just showed up! UPS
Let's hope they also use the post office - I gave a PO Box for my address... But I know they have before, since as far as I know Wingra Direct is handling shipments of club gear and they've shipped to my PO Box before by USPS, so I'm thinking my odds are good.

On the one hand, in a big-box store, Bicycles can be had for as little as under $1.25 a deck.
On the other hand, the other goodies involved with membership are also still worth it!
BTW: did you guys notice that you can WIN the kit on the Bicycle FB page? By a random drawing held every Friday (today probably being the last Friday)? And that they give out HUNDREDS of these kits through the drawings?
-
I got my kit today. I was happy with just the free deck and access to exclusive decks but the fact that they sent me this for free is awesome.
-

Yea, I was just at Sam's Club today (or what it Costco?) and this same brick is only $14.95 - not trying to be argumentative, just saying you CAN get these cards a lot cheaper.

This is true although from what I've seen, and I've bought quite a few bricks at Costco, they all seem to be a little off. almost like the decks that didn't pass the quality check (i.e. borders way off center, etc) so they threw them in a package and sold them discount. Their great for performance where you tear, burn or generally destroy a deck in a night. It could just be me though but that's what I tend to see from those stores...
-
I usually bought em for card tricks that needed "signatures" or for "Card Warp"
Why do I put everything in quotes? I am so weird.
-
I bought the membership after hearing about this kit. $20 a year is worth it just for this kit, let alone the remaning 363 days of my membership.
-
for some reason my card was not working. Wish I could have used paypal, hoping to get this worked out.
-
Has anyone else received their kits yet, because mine has not showed up. And by the pictures, I am super excited to be getting my brick.
-

Did your kit and your "Club 808" deck come in the same package? A lot of newly-minted members want to know! :))

They get the same brick sleeves that other retailers get. You might simply be seeing the general drop in quality of the Bicycle Rider Backs since the move to Erlanger. After the kinks of working with the new machines were finally dealt with, Rider Backs were still running a bit lower in quality, something a lot of people attribute to simple cost-cutting. They're probably made at a quality-control "Q" level that's a step lower than previous. They guarantee all those decks anyway, and most people likely won't notice or care about minor things like a slightly off-center back.
Having said how cheaply decks can be had, they can also go the opposite way. Most retailers in New York are selling Bike Standards for between $4.00-4.50 a pack... I can get Tally Ho from a local vegetable shop (yup, a "farmer's market" style veggie shop!) for $3 a pack! Not bad by New York prices, but T11 sells them much cheaper in bulk.

No I got the club 808 deck last month.

I got an email that my "order" had shipped, but I assume that's the 808 deck. (on a side not those Griffen Backs look pretty sweet)

I'm not certain - you'd have to contact USPC and inquire with them.

The orders are handled by Wingra Direct. It's not impossible that they'd send your Club 808 deck and Play More Cards kit in the same package. It cuts down on their shipping, handling and packaging costs to send them together.
I got my Griffin decks earlier this week - I ordered a half-brick, the maximum limit. The cards are very nice and the box is mighty cool-looking. I can't remember ever seeing so much foil on one tuck box!
-

I'm not certain - you'd have to contact USPC and inquire with them.
I've sent an e-mail asking that and the answer was: "Sorry... it's only being made available to U.S. 808 Club Members at this time."
I sure hope they change their idea, because it's not nice to have different classes of members. A member is a member. But it´s only my opinion.

Wait, what? They actually emailed me and said I'd be getting this and now it looks like I won't. That is really not cool, I'll have to find the email and send them some choice words.
-
from Bike their facebook page says
if you live outside the US. You will still receive the kit--it may just be after Feb. 23.

It's an unavoidable fact that shipping in-country and out-of-country has an entirely different set of costs and level of complications in terms of Customs forms and variable rates in different countries. The alternative would be to charge you a MUCH higher membership fee to cover all those international costs.

Well, there you go. It sounds like one hand didn't know what the other hand was doing...
-
So, if you become a member right now!, you dont get the kit? or any of the past stuff (just the 808 deck) that they gave away??
Not that cool...
On a side note, maybe i should have asked ellusionist if new memebers of the black club get the past stuff that the other members got :/
-
Yes you don't get the stuff but that doesn't mean tere wot be any giveaways in the future. I highly doubt this will be the only freebies they will offer. Maybe not a whole brick again but maybe something just as nice. I say this membership is still a great investment.
I mean, almost all memberships have an initial sign up perk and more often than not, they offer things to the first members of a new membership as a thank you for joining.
-
So I became a member a few days ago, was I to late to get it?

it was the 19th :( I think I was to late.

For 1 day? I think the deadline was an incentive. You'll probably get the stuff.
-

You won't be getting it. I had sent a message on the morning of the 19th to Bicycle. I had a friend who wanted to join to get the Club Ambassador Kit, but they forgot about the deadline.
Anyway, Bicycle got back to me quickly.. and here's what they wrote
"Hi Jason - Unfortunately, our last day for shipping the kits was yesterday. However, stay tuned later this week for details about one last Play More Cards promo"
Sorry John

I got this notice on the 20th

Dude, the kit and the Club 808 deck are IT - what "past stuff" are you talking about?
Let me ask you something: if you got a ticket to see Oprah live today, and you asked if you could get all the neat things that previous audience members got, y'know, like, CARS and stuff...do you think I'd hear them laughing in Chicago from here in New York??
What makes so many people think they'd be eligible for giveaways RETROACTIVELY, before they were even members? For this club and for Artifice Black Club? If I buy a lottery ticket today that had last week's winning numbers on it, would I be eligible for last week's jackpot?!?!?
Is common sense that UNCOMMON these days?
Join NOW - you get what's coming up. You want what came BEFORE, go get Doc Brown's DeLorean and set the cruise control to 88 miles an hour...

I am not sure if I understand. Is it supposed every 808 club member will receive such a big package including those outside USA? For free?

That seems a bit hard to figure out. There are multiple posts confirming that we are and are not going to get them. I definitely haven't received anything, but it's sort of expected.
Has anyone outside of USA received a pack? Anyone outside North America?

Yes. As long as you signed up for the membership before (debatably) February 18-20 of this year.

This is what I received from an 808 rep
"Dear Nurul,
Thank you, once again for your Club 808 membership.
I am terribly sorry for the misinformation that I had conveyed to you regarding the Club 808 Play More Kit. Please accept my apology.
United States Playing Cards will be sending us these kits soon, and in turn we will be shipping your kit to you.
I hope you'll enjoy the free kit as a valued member of Club 808!

Just got my 808 kit this week in a package from UPS at 7:00. The package is amazing, and I feel that this entire package is already worth the $20. The brick is nice, as all Standards are, and you also get a whole bunch of Bicycle-branded items, as mentioned earlier. The only part that irked was in the letter received in the package saying something about how we have to endorse the brand by having weekly "Poker Nights". Long story short, they made me feel like I had an obligation to "play more cards" with the merchandise shipped over, when, in signing up, I had no idea it would be like this. (Sorry if my rant maybe a bit confusing)

I get what you mean but the point is to basically sponser and advertise for Bicycle right? I mean I don't think the free stuff was just for kicks. But hey, it's what they want you to do, not that you actually haaaave to :))

I use a USPS Post Office box. I don't have it set up yet for receiving UPS packages. I've already contacted USPC about it and they said about a week-plus ago that if it didn't arrive to contact them and they'd resend one.
I'm still a little mind-boggled about the whole giveaway. It's a nice way to promote card playing in general, which is always a good thing for a playing card company! They haven't done something akin to this in many years.
