That's not very British of you.  ;)

I used to drink about 5 a day, but have found that I have lapsed more into drinking coffee nowadays as the instant stuff is easier to prepare.

I like my tea extremely dark and bitter and cold. If possible, I drink ONLY tea on any given day.

Fuck water.

It no longer is.

I drink only occasionally, while my wife drinks a couple of cups a day.  I have this awesome tea maker - I fear that the company that made it is out of business; I searched through Google and can't find a mention of it anywhere.  Anyway, it's big enough to make the perfect two-cup pot, and it has its own pot, with matching cups and a serving tray that doubles as a tray to hold the machine while brewing.  You fill a small tank with water and fill a special basket with your favorite tea, loose-leaf or in bags.  Place the basket on the water (it floats) and select your tea types - you can select the tea variety (black, oolong, herbal, etc.), whether the tea is loose or bagged and how strong you want it.  Flip the power switch and the machine makes all the necessary adjustments for different varieties in order to make the perfect cup - for example, it knows a green tea is not made at 100 degrees C but more like 90-95 degrees.  As the water heats, a valve in the basket opens and it sinks into the water, starting the brewing process.  After a few minutes, the power light blinks and the tea is dispensed into the pot beneath it, all ready to serve.  Remove the machine from the tray, place two cups where the machine was sitting and voila - service for two.

That thing makes the best tea I've ever had - I prefer stronger, more flavorful teas, and I've never had a cup stronger than the one this thing makes.  I should go find the brand name on the machine and do another look-up to see if the company's still in business - I'd hate to think if this thing breaks I won't be able to find parts or get repairs or a replacement.

Two of my favorites are herbals - Lavender-Chamomile blend for relaxing and Mint-Chocolate Truffle as a fine after-dinner drink.  I'm also fond of green teas and have a few very nice varieties.  But there's one I really love, it's a black tea from India with awesome spices in it - I make it so strong, it stains the machine!

Tea is an occasional delight - Mrs. Sovereign drinks it all the time, I prefer obnoxiously strong coffee. Every now and then I get an odd craving for tea though and when I have it it's pretty much perfect.

Ew instant coffee... I swear that's the devil's stuff. We have a mid-top tier coffee machine at home. I used to work at a cafe last year when i was in high school, so i was trained as a barista. I make at least 1-2 cups of coffee a day it's pretty much a daily routine. I'm incredibly caffeine tolerant and often drink coffee before i hit the hay =p

I live in the South, so when you say "tea", I think a tall glass full of ice with more sugar than tea in it. THAT is my vice, I drink that with just about every meal. I highly doubt I could survive if I needed to give it up for any reason, or at the very least, my beard might wither away. And that kids, is not how this mountain man rolls.

You cant say you hate coffee from trying a mocha, Nurul! Mocha is terrible. Coffee with chocolate= versatility. Versatility= compromise. Good for some great for none. Grab a more traditional latte, cappuccino or flat white etc next time. And also make sure you try proper freshly ground first rather than shitty instant coffee..

I'd like his number! Haha. When i was underage (15/16) we used to line up espresso shots at work and play the drinking game betting on how hot the next chick that walked in would be. Now it's just all alcohol, sloooooots and dat dere green gra$$.

The mocha was just one of the reasons why I don't like it. Tried a latte, wasn't for me. I just don't like coffee. Also, how can you lot drink an espresso, u might as well just chew on a few coffee beans :p .. It's weird, I can eat coffee flavoured chocolate and I eat tiramisu (without the alcohol included). But I won't eat tea based foods but I love drinking it lol there's this green tea ice cream we serve at some venues, was an aquired taste, not a fan.

Fair enough =p

In regards to espresso, and all coffee really, it depends on the beans, how well they're ground (so many factors contribute to this.. Like bean age, temperature etc..do your own research if you're interested). Good coffee has a very velvety and smooth taste. Not that bitter dry dirt shit you're used to with instant espresso/short blacks.. The taste and texture requires getting used to. I used to hate the taste when i was a kid but nowadays it's become a part of my lifestyle (probably explains my high tolerance to caffeine =p). I personally dont particularly like espressos, but when my buddies used to get together to take shots it's really just for the act rather than the taste. Think of doing pre-drinks with shots of vodka. When i first started drinking vodka i also hated the taste, but after a few nights out both your tastebuds/stomach get used to it. I'm now also pretty fucking tolerant to alcohol haha, i take it down pretty smoothly and don't get drunk easily.

Lol I wouldn't know about that, I don't drink lol it's just a taste I don't think I can get use to when drinking it .. Tea and hot chocolate for me (not mixed of course) .. Had a lovely lemon & ginseng tea yesterday at work. I wana try an iced tea, just the thought of it sounds wrong though.

I stopped drinking hot chocolate when i was like 10.. haha! I do have to admit i crave Milo and milk (prefer cold over hot) from time to time.. Iced tea does not capture the true taste of premium tea at all.. it's really just a novelty drink with tea extract and a shit tonne of sugar. Still nice though! I assume Lipton ice tea is available in most countries? It's the 'standard' of ice tea here in Australia, much like how Coke/Pepsi is the standard of Cola.

I like the smell of coffee, but never acquired the taste for it.  I can tolerate coffee-flavored ice cream and back when I was a drinker, Kahlua was an ingredient in many of my beverages.  But coffee itself?  Nah.

BTW: there is a company out there that makes chocolate-covered coffee beans as a candy item.  Not a kid's candy, though, unless you like catching them as they ricochet off the walls...

And on the topic of iced tea...  There's a popular iced tea/juice company here called Arizona, noted for big 24-ounce cans that sell for $0.99.  They have an Arnold Palmer that's fantastic.  Arnold Palmer is a drink named after the golfer who was so fond of it - half iced tea, half lemonade.  The only thing I can imagine that would be better would be replacing the lemonade with limeade...  Mmm...  Love me some limeade...

Yes but ours are in cans. And Don arizonia tea is horrible for you. There is high fructose corn syrup, so your missing out of benefits of drinking tea. Look for the brand "peace tea" they don't use high fructose corn syrup.

You can get the chocolate covered beans at Starbucks, and yes if you eat a handful. You will be wired.

I right there with you on the Arizona AP's. My kids got me hooked. They use to stop by the corner store everyday after school, and pick them up.
There's a great SportsCenter commercial with Arnold Palmer making an Arnold Palmer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLxKSvkpE1Y)

Funny you mention that Mydnyghte, but it's oh so true. I have family in GA and it's all about the "Sweet Tea". I do enjoy the occasional cup of tea, but I'm more of a coffee person, nothing like that smell 1st thing in the AM.

In those bottles, it's nearly the same price here!  For some bizarre reason, the cans are kept at $0.99 but the bottles, which are usually a bit smaller, go for much more.  It's probably got to do with how the brand got its start.  Think about it - if a drug dealer wants to get you hooked, he'll give you a taste for free, but then will charge full price (or more) when you can't live without it.  They've still got the cans but are shifting more production to the bottles.

Yes but ours are in cans. And Don arizonia tea is horrible for you. There is high fructose corn syrup, so your missing out of benefits of drinking tea. Look for the brand "peace tea" they don't use high fructose corn syrup.

Why else do you think it would sell for $0.99 for a 24-ounce can!?  :))

I don't drink it much these days anyway, and when I do, it's usually the sugar-free flavors.

Sweet tea is becoming popular in more places than just the South these days.  Arizona sells a version of it in New York, and I think McDonald's has it on their menu here now as well.  At a time when diabetes is nearly an epidemic, no less...  :))  Silly me, I've actually tried looking for sugar-free sweet tea!

Why Corn Syrup is fucking terrible (and why AZ tea is garbage): it leaves an after-taste and makes your saliva weird and sticky.

Sugar also kind of does that, but not to the same extent. The best is definitely fake sweeteners, as they leave literally no aftertaste. However, fake sweeteners are terrible with tea except with a few flavor varieties.

Anyone wanting to try a man's tea, try Tejava. :D

Fake sweeteners are horrible for the body as well. high fructose corn syrup is really high on the glycemic level, and it slows you metabolism.

Fake sweeteners can still cause diabetes but have no calories and, contrary to popular belief, are not linked with cancer.

My favorite sweetener would be Truvia or any of the generic variants.  It's the crystalline form of an extract from the leaf of the stevia plant.  It doesn't get more natural and healthy at the same time.

I drank iced tea once. Unsweetened. Tasted like someone had stirred my water with a dirty finger.

Then you had bad tea. Real tea should taste like herbs + grass + coffee all in one delicious drink.

Mydnyghte - You brought back an old memory of my Aunt Pauline.  We used to visit her in Alabama back in the 80's.  I remember that big clear plastic glass of ice tea.  I swear there was an inch of sugar on the bottom.  So much sugar it could not dissolve.  She was also the aunt when Chucky and I got into trouble She would say, "Go outside and get me a switch.  It better be a good switch cos you don't want me to pick my own"  I can still hear the air cut before it hit my ASS!!!!

Don, it's funny you mention it catching on in other places. I've traveled up north numerous times and out of habit I always ask for sweet tea at restaurants. To which the response is always "Sugar is on the table" However, I did find if you go far enough north, to Canada, sweet tea reemerges. BUT, it is unlike anything I've ever experienced. If I told you I knew what it was sweetened with, it would imply the glass remained on the table long enough for me to ask.

Sparkz, your story made me think of my aunt, who's specialty is making sun tea. And that, you can't beat with a stick. True story.

Canadians have a notorious sweet tooth.  My mother is from Quebec.  I still remember breakfasts of toast with caramel spread or maple spread, and spruce beer.  But not for breakfast.  Malt vinegar on potato chips.  And lots of really sweet stuff in general.

Use the link Sprouts1115 provided for the definition of a switch.  It is not a blade, but a branch.

Sun tea - cold tea made by brewing in an ice-filled pitcher left out in bright sunlight.

Rooibos - good stuff.  I have some in my tea collection at home.

I love me some red tea too. I know a couple of South Africans who can't stop going on about how much better it is than black tea.  ::)

Oolong's alright, mainly cos it forms the base of most bubble teas. And I've tried some white tea, and that is better with floral and fruity flavours. Looks like really weak green tea, but tastes OK.

I wouldn't say that, really.  There's a reason why it's called white tea and not really young green tea.  The flavors are lighter, more subtle and there's more antioxidants, or so I've been told.

The two most common mass-market household brands would be Lipton and Nestea, in all likelihood.  I never touch the stuff, though - I prefer loose tea from a tea shop.  There's a chain store called "Teavana" that's kind of popular in upscale shopping malls, though they're far from the cheapest.  I know of an online retailer that has a decent selection - I miss her brick-and-mortar store; it was near the old location of my dojo.

If I'm feeling really ambitious and want some very, VERY good green tea among other varieties, there's an Ito En store not too far from my workplace, though I'm rarely in the area when it's open.  Ito En is one of the larger international brands and is based in Japan.  Their bottled cold teas are pretty fine as well - all unsweetened and pure.

If I'm less ambitious, there's a few Japanese supermarkets I can go to and one "pan-Asian" market that's got a really good selection of pretty much anything for the kitchen or the home, except furniture.  If I want furniture, there's a multi-store marketplace in New Jersey that I've been to before with a friend - I think they still have a Kinokuniya bookstore on-site as well.  I keep wanting to stop in and pick up a kotatsu/futon set, and the time of year for having one handy is definitely approaching in this hemisphere.  I keep wondering why no one ever created a Westernized version of a kotatsu...

Ciccolata Calda, it's almost like a pudding. Personally, I prefer spanish hot chocolate, much more creamier.

The Spanish are definitely among the better hot chocolates, as a follow up I love some churros and chocolate

Don - Kotatsu! We we're watching My Neighbours the Yamadas the other day and pining for their kotatsu. Super want.

Ref: hot chocolate, I visited my brother last weekend and he cooked up a load of milk with cardamon pods in then made hot chocolate with pure cocoa using the milk. It was amazingly delicious but almost too strong for me. A bit time consuming for me though...
When I make hot chocolate I get a few bars of Bournville chocolate and melt them into milk on the hob, it is really nice, but again it takes so long it is just for special.

Dark chocolate can be an acquired taste, depending on the percentage of cacao.  I've been known to occasionally nibble on a 99% cacao bar from Lindt - very bitter, but with a nice aftertaste when it melts.

You're probably tasting your chocolate the way the Aztecs did - chocolate was a liquid in its earliest incarnations.  It wasn't until the Hershey Company added milk fat solids to it in order to make it more easily portable - and thus the chocolate bar was born.

I just got back from China. They literally had the best tea I've ever had. Longjing (dragon well) tea is grown in Hang Zhou, and I got the privileged of visiting the tea village. You can actually eat the tea leaves once you've brewed a few cups with them. (btw, it's green tea, so it's super fresh and subtle.)

The Chinese family I was staying with also served me a cup of Pu'er tea. Best black tea I ever drank. Amazingly strong, almost like coffee.

It's practically the birthplace of tea, China.  I can only imagine some of the teas that were available to you.
