A new deck from CARC? I believe so.. I'm liking that tuck box.
The second time I've seen it designed in that way (the first being on the black book of cards)
Photo taken from CARC Facebook page.
Anyone know much more about these?
-
Interesting, I have to agree with you Nurul, I like the tuck box, would love to see the front design of it. Also, I didn't realize that the Black Book of Cards had a similar box design.
-
They don't, that's my mistake, sorry.
They had the bicycle logo, horizontally, not the actual tuck case, my bad.
-

Gotcha, I remember the horizontal logo, but couldn't find anything on the tuck box layout, lol
No worries
-
Now THAT is a truly cool deck.
Love that back.
-
I'd wager that they're using the same printer as their previous project, the Global Titans. Love that box, and the Ace of Spades is very old-school cool.
-
Has The USPCC ever put out a deck with a tuck with a horizontal (or otherwise unconventional) opening like that?
I think that I remember that someone else, or a different plant, does their tucks, or am I just dreaming?
-
Cadets... USPCC... Russell Morgan Printing Company - Late 1800s...

I had some time to chat with Bill Kalush while at the 52 Plus Joker Convention, the tuck case is awesome, got to check it out in person. It has an incredible feel and texture to it. He also mentioned that he used the same printers that produced the Legends deck.
-
Jm, thanks! Good info, very interesting that they have done it, but it's been a year or two since the last horizontal tuck was put out by them!
-
It looks great, indeed. The tuck box seems like an adapted Pack Jacket they released 3 months ago, wich can be a good idea. But the my fear, like Don pointed out, is that the cards are just like the Global Titans, wich is not a good thing. Let's wait and see.

Ah the secret printing company from Taiwan :) I wonder if the deck will have any significant/secret features like the legends deck had

If he's using the same printer as the Legends, then no - it's NOT the same printer that did the Global Titans. The GBs were made in Shanghai, the Legends were made in Taiwan. I was simply guessing which printer based on the box printing being so similar. Now that I know it's the Legends printer, it's something that should be on a lot of people's want lists.

Bill's own projects to date have all been "straight" decks, gimmick-free. Legends was a Lawrence Sullivan deck. It's not impossible that he'd gaff it up, but it's not likely based on his track record.
-
I know the legends deck was primarily Lawrence Sullivan, but didn't Kalush (as well as blaine) have input on the deck?
I wonder if he's working with anyone else regarding the exquisite deck
-

Input, sure. But that doesn't make it Bill's project. Lawrence used the same artist as David (and Whispering Imps), Mark Stutzman. Doesn't make it David's project, either. :))
I'm thinking he's not "working with anyone else", though I'm sure he's got friends, employees, etc. giving him input here and there. Expert Playing Card Company is his baby, 100%.
-
jmrock, I envy everything about you. That deck is absolutely amazing.
I honestly really hated the feel of the Legends decks. I bought a whole brick when CARC had them on sale a couple weeks ago and now I don't know what I'm gonna do with them all.
-
This deck is a remake of an old vintage deck that he bought from Tom and Judy Dawson. You may know Tom Dawson, he is the author The Playing Card Encyclopedia.

I know them - actually met them at their home in Toronto. Very nice people, the both of them. Bill recently purchased some items from Tom, so I'm guessing this was among them. Most of the decks he's made are remakes of classics in some way or another.
Any deck initially created prior to 1923 in the US would be in the public domain today in regards to copyright, leaving only trademark law to protect it - and a trademark left out of the public eye for too long a time doesn't have much of a leg to stand on, especially when it's a long-defunct brand name. This leave Bill or anyone else free to republish the oldest USPC designs, should they choose to do so. The only reason he didn't name his previous deck simply "Titans" was that another deck recently came out using the same name.
Now as far as the whole De'vo vs. CARC thing with this deck's name, well - I have no idea how a legal challenge would shake out, and I'm betting neither company wants to mess with it. De'vo could try to argue that it's his "Signature Series Exquisite" deck, and maybe that would work, I don't know. (That is what he's calling it, right? The Signature Series?)

I'm just curious about what "Master Finish" is. I know the Global Titans weren't the most warmly received deck, though personally I didn't think they were bad - not great, but definitely not bad. I can't tell for certain but I think these may be from the same factory.
-
I really like how they did the box.

I am WRONG. These aren't from the Shanghai factory. I can't give out details yet, but these will be FAR SUPERIOR to the Global Titans. If they are what I believe they are, you will be stunned.
That, and many other exciting things, will be going on at conjuringarts.org on Thursday - NOT Friday! So don't go slipping into your turkey coma until you've checked it out.

Really looking forward to these cards, unfortunately my wallet doesn't share my sentiments. Especially with everything else going on that Thurs / Fri.

@Don Boyer: I'm not sure if you missed the JacksonRobinson post?

I'm really trying to cut down on buying new decks. This is going to be a tough one to pass on. I'm going to wait and see what everyone thinks after using them first. Maybe I can still pick them up somewhere if I change my mind.

I'm guessing I did miss the post. :))
But - let's just say I know of a few interesting things going on over at CARC that will leave you kicking yourself in the butt if you don't check out the site on Thursday. It's not like some massive holiday giveaway, but for some, it might even be better!

No doubt, I plan on checking it out. If there are a few things I like, I will drop some of these decks in the shopping cart with them.

It looks like CARC has a price out for the Exquisite deck already: http://shop.conjuringarts.org/store/pc/Exquisite-Playing-Cards-VERY-RARE-Limited-Red-Edition-Exclusive-Deck-and-Pack-Jacket-only-14-95-Pstpd-in-US-144p981.htm#.UpJDENKORv8 .
At almost 15$ with shipping is a bit pricing. I'm curious as to whether the blue Exquisite is less rare and costing less.

As per your link:
Our worker edition of this deck is made of the original back design (not reversed), printed in metallic blue and it also has a sideways tuck completely done in a beautiful blue foil. These are $5.95 per deck.
-
Thanks ... now I get to look like an idiot for not reading further down ... :-[ ,but I'm going to claim that the extra text wasn't up yet when I checked it out. I think the red ones will sell out pretty quick even at that price with only 800 decks printed.

They might sell quick and they might not. 800 decks at $15 could take a few days or a few weeks. They are up against a few companies looking to get a piece of the Black Friday market share. That's probably why CARC is releasing these on Thursday rather then Black Friday.
-
Yeah, Black Friday is going to hurt. But at least the large majority of the decks being released are awesome. Can't wait for this one. It looks brilliant.
-
Don, since you gotten to see both the blue and red versions of the Exquisite deck, which do you think looks better in your opinion? I understand the red is much more limited but just curious what you think.
-
Great Ace. Style of those used 100+ years ago. That style, at least similar, of tuck case also used in late 1800's and early 1900's.

You're right. I may end up picking up a pair of red and blues later tonight. Just needs some more mulling over.
-
Got a couple blues, a red and one pack jacket. Missed out on the Legends but I was never really a fan of them anyway. Besides the cool box they didn't seem that great. Oh well, definitely excited about the Exquisites though.
-
I got these in today! You know how Don said they are fantastic, well i never believe Don because... well hes Don.;) Just playing, love ya bud! Anyway Don wasn't kidding when he said these things are fantastic... When you first open them the cards almost feel oily but after playing with em that goes away, yet they still handle fantastic! If you haven't picked any up yet, I really suggest you do!

ROTF "just playing" There's always a little truth to jokes, isn't there?
I might still pick up one or two of the Blue. I just have too many other decks in the rotation right now. I would love to get one of these Taiwanese decks just to put through the wringer. I now own both 1st Edition and v2 Black legends and the collector in me is being cautious. There is something to be said for existing decks that are not a favorite of mine. They get lots of use and practice time.
The better you get, the more cards you want, the more finesse you have, the longer your cards last, the less cards you can buy. How Ironic!

If there is there isn't any in this case. Don and I had a fairly lengthy back and forth in PM about these decks and he ranked them to slightly better than the Legends, which I expected so I knew they would be great. The "I never believe Don" was from the fact I actually do highly respect the man and his opinions because he knows what hes doing :P.
I'm going to be honest. If you have the Legends, your not missing out on much handling wise. I personally feel they are slighting better than Legends 1.5 but nothing where if you don't really want them you don't need to buy them. That being said If you had a few bucks spare from Black Friday I would totally get them.

I'm sure the cards are great. Much better then the Shanghai decks that someone whom I will not name tried defending. CARC is back on track. They needed this. It puts Global Titans behind them. I'm happy for CARC because they do some really nice things for the community and are a valuable resource. I got a load of free reading this summer from them.

I agree with ya 100% that they are back on track. Not because the Global Titans were a step back for CARC, they were actually pretty nice if you ask me, just needed a ton of breaking in, but because CARC is passed the Erdnase deck stage and finally onto doing their own custom decks. The Erdnase decks were nice and all but, come on how many deck with Erdnase in the theme can you do?
Global Titans are a fine deck, but these are by far better my miles.
-
Actually, it's kind of funny. Bill Kalush mentioned that some really prominent card men were loving on the Global Titans. But it's not a deck for everyone, I guess. I don't think they're perfect, but the handling does improve, much like Legends, but with extra breaking in. When I last saw him carrying around his deck and fiddling with it, it was smooth like butter. In fact, it was smoove!
As good as the old Legends were, the new Legends are better, and the Exquisites even better still, though by the smallest of margins.
-
The tuck box shown in reply #7 used for the patience sized Cadet deck, is the only early USPC one we have ever seen [and we've seen a multitude of early USPC boxes]. The Exquisite box is, well, exquisite!!
-
Off topic: i never understood why people thought the legends handled poorly. It was obvious to me that they would need double if not triple the break in time of a uspcc deck.
-
Here is a pix of the Cadets box discussed in earlier post

Exquisite… Just really a name… Just as the new "Expert" playing card company - New York, NY - but made in China??? Just not a fan of throwing names around trying to illicit a favorable response… Call me crazy, but didn't like the Legends or Titans (a cheap knockoff of yesteryear) and not going to purchase these "exquisite" cards… Although I do like some of the fonts and what they're trying to accomplish, I feel they fall short… Not a fan…

The Legends are certainly NOT knockoff's of anything. Other then the Western European court cards, they are completely original.

JM, I don't think you know what you're missing. They're not simply pretty cards in a pretty box - they perform. It's a quality deck, without a doubt.
Here is a pix of the Cadets box discussed in earlier post
Thanks for that picture - it's a blast from the past. I remember seeing that deck for the first time - at your place!
You should head over to the "Introduce Yourself" board and make a new topic for yourself - let the gang get to know you a little better.
-
I'm getting more and more curious. But I must be pacient, international shipping takes a while.
-
Got these today. They handle alright, but feel very much like plastic. And smell like it to. The scent is quite strong right out of the box.
They also seem to have a one way back. The cross/club shape in the center angles different ways on each side of the card.
-
Got my Exquisites (along with 2 Black Legends) and I love 'em, however I ordered the 6 pack (5 Blue, 1 Red) plus an additional Red but only received the 6 pack. I'm missing the 2nd Red. I sent them an email. Hopefully they respond quickly and take care of it.
Anyway, the cards look and feel very good. I find them very similar to the legends. I like the look of the side-open tuck case, but I've noticed I have a harder time getting the cards back in the tuck. Probably just my lack of coordination, but it can be frustrating.
They also seem to have a one way back. The cross/club shape in the center angles different ways on each side of the card.
Good find, though its subtle enough for me. Also it looks like the 2 diamond shapes just above/below the center with lines running through them are different. One has the lines all the way to the points, the other the lines stop before the points.

I ordered 2 sets of the red and blue combo pack at the same time. I received one pack on Saturday. I didn't receive the other one at the same time. I got them mailed to a different location from where I am currently so I do not know if they have yet arrived. I am just assuming they got delayed in the mailing process. Not too worried since I got one so far. Let me know what their response is though.
-
In case anyone is wondering, CARC have sold half of their 800 deck limited run of the Red Exquisites. They have 411 left in stock.

From their website, after I login, I select "My Account" which brings up the Account Menu page. From there I just selected "Contact Us" and filled out the form.
Got my 2nd Red deck from them today. Quick turn around. Very impressed.
-
They must be really tired from filling orders. Got my three 2 pack sets (red/blue) of the Exquisites and a brick of Legends in yesterday. Everything was packed in brick boxes (Titan boxes) and they threw in another pack jacket to fill the empty space in one brick box. Packed into a big box with a ton of protection. Probably the best packed large order that I have ever received. They must have packed my order at the start of the day, right after their morning Starbucks fix! :-) All complete and perfect.
-
Hey BiggerDee, It might be based on order size for the pack jackets. I got 2 additional in my order, the Green "Expert at the Card Table" ones. And I would have to agree on the packing efforts, they were great and there would have been no way for anything to get damaged. Either way, very happy with the order, decks and extras :D
-
They jut came in.
Personally, I think the Legends handle much better. They seems to snap and fan smoother and have a bit more grip. The finish on them feels like ivory, but it's actually embossed.
Maybe they'll feel better once I break them in. I was iffy about the Legends when I first handled them, but now they're one of my favorite decks.
Oh, and the tuck box is awesome.

Indeed… I was not referring to the Legends, but rather the Titans… Which are taken from a Squeezers deck by NY Consolidated Card Company as seen below…

Just got mine too...
What's with the one way front?
The number part of the indices are bolder at one end, so a pack that has been mixed end-to-end looks messy when fanned. As if you've mixed two decks!
Loving everything else!

That is a mechanism for magicians. Have the deck all arranged in one way, have someone pick a card, put it in the other way...that kind of thing. The Legends feature that as well. Subtle but useful if you are the magic type.

Though I wouldn't have compromised the design for that effect. It can be achieved without slight of hand with a normal deck and I'm finding a randomly mixed deck quite uneasy on the eyes, no?

Just got mine too...
What's with the one way front?
The number part of the indices are bolder at one end, so a pack that has been mixed end-to-end looks messy when fanned. As if you've mixed two decks!
Loving everything else!

I honesty don't think it's that bad, but just as well, I noticed that the back design is a subtle one way back. There's some center elements that are intentionally a bit more left or right. The printing is way to perfect for it anything but intentional. I only noticed it today as I was riffle shuffling the deck. The one way back doesn't align with the one way front of the card, but it's a great extra feature none the less.

Ohhh tempting. I wasn't able to get any Exquisites since they flagged my purchase as a possible fraudulent one probably because the shipping and billing address were half a world away.

Have you tried contacting Conjuring Arts directly to inquire about it? Or perhaps even Bill himself? You should - your name isn't exactly unknown in the collecting community and Bill's a fellow 52+J member.

I didn't because I got sick at the end of the day and hospitalized for a week 2 days after. I kinda thought I was over spending during that month anyway so I figured I'd get one at the after market. But this sale is hooking me in...

Just picked up one of these Exquisite deals, figured they absolutely deserved a bump. This really is a steal.

They are considering of the half dozen, it's only 5$ more for the 3 Blue and 3 Red plus their exclusive Pack Jackets .... now the sad thing is I placed my order for 5 Blues + 1 Red one day before the Exquisite deal .... :( . Talk about worst timing ever.

If you contact CARC as fast as possible they might be able to accommodate a change. They're a pretty nice bunch of people over there, and if you catch them early enough in the fulfillment process, they make be willing to assist you.
