I'm trying to convince a good buddy of mine (very gifted artist) to step into the playing card world. He's interested in minimalist design, and I want to show him some decks for inspiration. The first one to pop into my head was the new Deco deck. Beautiful deck by the way Encarded. Anyways I was hoping you guys could add some to the list beyond the usual (NOCs & Rounders). Thanks!

Republic No.2 by Ellusionist, one of my faves.

A few of these might fit the bill.

The most minimalist deck I've ever seen was from a Chinese company - don't ask me which one, I can't recall it. The cards were entirely blank, front and back, except for two corner indices on the faces for value and suit. If you were to get more minimal than that, you'd have to use something less substantial than paper...

You should check Robert Rauschenberg's painting "White" from 1951 for some inspiration. They sell now for around 10-12 MIIIIIILLLLLLIIIIIIOOOOOONNNNNN

One Saturday some years ago we decided to take a trip to the Philadelphia Art Museum.
The "artist" featured in their main exhibit was Barnett Newman.
We were laughing so hard, we were asked to leave the museum
to think of the money that people actually pay for that (descriptor left out to not offend people who like his "work"), I should have been crying.

Thanks all! Some of the "worth" of those pieces baffle me. I don't think he's heading quite this minimalistic. He may have been intimidated because I showed him the Federal 52s to demonstrate the other side of the spectrum;P

I have also seen works of arts and designs that baffle me. But being a designer myself, i got to say that a lot of it comes down to the "concept" behind the "work"
Perhaps you can have your friend come up with a concept or a reasoning as to why he wants to do a minimalistic design. Without a concept, the design could be just seen as a lazy piece of work, especially for a minimalistic design.

Good point! Thanks. I'll tell him to keep his inspiration in mind through out the process.

It's hard to tell, based on that link. They only show one ace and the card backs, nothing else.
BTW: welcome to the Discourse! Your name is in blue - I think that means it's your birthday, right? If so, Happy Birthday (and to you as well, Mada257)! Azagon, you should head over to the "Introduce Yourself" topic and let the gang get to know you a little better - it's fun 'cause a lot of us come around to say hi and welcome you and ask you nosy questions! :))
-
Not to get off topic, but it's not my birthday. :P Also, I'm pretty sure I have it set up for the correct date. Is the blue color now for new members perhaps? Anyways, thanks for all the ideas!

Nope - just found out it's probably a glitch.

About the deck, they also show a joker I think... bit blury though... But still I really like the back design...

This deck is beauty, but I prefer playing cards with a lot of decoration, like split spades or legacy
