Is there another definition for Alvus, because the definition I searched cannot be tied to this ...

Good 'ol modern-closeup-angleshot, so trendy and cutting edge.

I like the little that we can see of the back. I'll need more than a tease to decide if I want the deck though.

It's almost like an early April fools joke or something, haha.

According to Wikipedia:
The alvus, among anatomists, has sometimes been used to refer to the intestinal tube, from the stomach to the anus. Alvus, in a medical sense, is taken from the state and condition of the feces, or excrements contained within that cavity.

I dunno what's up with that name :S

Alvus - Latin for Beehive

Ah thank you for clearing that up. I see the beehive now. Is it true there's another artist working on this?

EDIT: I see it's actually written in the teaser lol

On that note, who is the new artist?

Alvus - Latin for Beehive

I don't know if you did the full research on the word Alvus.  Maybe you would like to change it to Alveus.  Im sure there are not a lot of latin speakers here.  God only knows why I took it in High School for 3 years.  :o  But anyways Alveus would not be able to be taken out of context for something like a poop.

I like the looks of the deck pretty sweet from what I see just figured I would let you know.

1st off, I like the design very much, I like the intricacy.

Second, all the hoopla over the name, it can be adjusted if needed, but please see below....

Okay.. Yes because all the latin you know is from a website. This is what is on a more accurate dictionary and is also what is in the latin to english dictionary on my bookshelf.

I made one comment don't be a drama queen. No hoopla just being honest.  When I heard the word alvus I remembered a different meaning.  It all depends on the context used but I'm sure you wouldn't know that because you only know latin from what you look up online.  So if an online definition is what you look for here it is...

alvus, alvi

LOL, no drama, just pointing it out....it's really not that big a deal, I'm just saying it's a name, it can be adjusted, corrected, if Jackson and Co. decide to do so. And the "Hoopla" was in general, not about you.

Not that it matters, but just because it comes first does not mean that it is more or less correct.  Its about context and how it is used.  Same goes for a lot of english words.  I originally thought it meant stomach.  After looking further into the etymology I thought Alveus would be more suitable for the lack of poop, and also learning that it meant gameboard which also fits the context of playing cards.

But as for the cards they look sweet as stated before.  Who ever the artist is congrats!

No, we continue to be distracted by our own works and don't have a full concept at the moment. This new deck is something else entirely, but quite lovely. I think you will all like it a lot.

Yeah, that name thing...  Companies are paid a lot of money to name and package products these days, in order to make names and packages that are pleasing and don't have negative connotations.

Chevrolet discontinued the Chevy Nova in South and Central America - in Spanish, "no va" means "doesn't go".

When the SciFi Channel changed its name to "SyFy" in an effort to make it more texting-friendly, they failed to consult the Urban Dictionary - it's a slang term for syphilis.

PepsiCo, while expanding into China, translated this term into Mandarin: "Pepsi brings you back to life."  Their translator fumbled on that one and ended up with THIS phrase in their ads: “Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave.”

Never package items for retail sale in Japan or to Japanese people in sets of four, such as a sake service set or kitchen tableware.  The word "shi" means both "four" and "death" in Japanese, though with different kanji, making it an unlucky number - even when going out socially, the Japanese will try to avoid groups of four, favoring a higher or lower number of people.  In fact, many older Japanese buildings are missing a 4th floor in much the same way as many older, taller American buildings are often missing a 13th floor.

The halls of advertising and branding firms are filled with similar such disasters all over the world...

This is also true about the number 9. Which is "Ku" which also means pain, suffering, or torture.
There are a lot of Japanese Buddhist rituals around the number 9 to ward off suffering.

The design is classy.

Funny story.

Last year Kraft foods de-merged into two companies. One being Kraft and the second being called Mondelez International. The company meant "Mondelez" to be an interpretation of a mash-up of the Latin words for "world" and "delicious." However, the name mondelez actually bears close resemblance to a vulgar Russian term for a sexual act. The company actually kept the name despite the close resemblance to something not so friendly.

Off topic - 4 is unlucky and 8 is lucky in China. As such Casino's in Macau do not have a level 4 in the hotels, and there is no 4th seat or position on card tables. (4s still exist as cards albeit are a sign of coming bad luck so the punter then changes tables, seats, or what he is betting on generally when this shows up).

Back on topic - possibly change to a different declension, simple quick and easy.

Looking Good Jackson… Are these artists under contract to you, or do they work independently as well?  As for the name, it could be because the decks you produce are the $#!T… Couldn't resist… On a serious note, is the deck Bee Branded?  Good luck with this… A lot of great things seem to be coming down the pipeline…

As for the artist of this deck, it is my hope that Kings Wild will evolve into a serious playing card company that continually produces a wide range of decks of many different styles but all executed a at very high level. It is also my hope, and "The Deck Formally Known as Alvus" is the beginning of my plan/vision of finding other talented artists and developing them into serious card designers who also approach card design as an art rather pumping out the lowest cost paper with pips and numbers at the highest volume. This deck is great and stylistically very different than the Fed.

The way I'm approaching this deck and future KW decks is simple. I want to develop decks in a way that I would like to see the card industry evolve into.

Ever consider having a design contest with parameters specific to how you want the industry to evolve Jackson?  I'm sure there are a lot of designers that would be happy to compete to try to get a design with the KW logo on the seal :)

Brendan,

So what's the story behind the pic? Will these make it to D&D/Art of Play for sale?

/bama

The pic is from a screenshot of the latest Coffee with D&D youtube video. I will admit that I didn't watch the whole thing, but it seems like they had a chance to hang out with Bill Kalush recently and got to see some of the recent stuff printed by EPCC in Taipei with The Hive being one of them being shown. I honestly knew nothing about it until someone shared the video with me and pointed out that I should check out the 26:25 mark of the video. I love what I created, but it's cool to see that others enjoy the artwork of the deck as well.

We've got a limited amount of 1000 decks of each colour (Red and Blue) so 2000 decks in total minus a small amount we're keeping for ourselves. All the decks will be sold on the Kings Wild Project website exclusively. We're got some more solid info and will be announcing a release date soon.

I got one of the sample decks a few weeks ago and they handle really well. The finish and stock is the same as the Exquisite and everything turned out better than I expected. It's been exciting and I'm glad that the deck can be release soon.

And thanks Sparkz! For posting the screenshot.

If you don't mind me asking, what is your background? Are you an artist by trade? The anthropologist in me is always curious to hear how people end up doing what they do. (Especially when they're awesome at it!)

I was lucky enough to do an interview with Ivan at Kardify when they revealed that I'm the artist for The Hive. Here's the link for it: http://www.kardify.com/2014/03/revealed-kings-wilds-artist-for-hive.html . I wish it was more interesting like my trait is something totally different from design, but in truth, I work as an illustrator so it's not that far off.

Will there be a cap on how many people will be able to purchase. For example, Encarded did this with their Zeneith deck and capped it at 4. This allowed everyone (theoretically) that wanted one to get one. What's going to happen with the Hive?

We're going to make an announcement in regards to release date and stuff like that soon, probably before the end of the July so stay tune to the Kings Wild Facebook page.

As for trying to make sure everyone can grab a deck, I hope everyone that wants one can grab one, but there's no promise to that. It's a limited run deck, with less than 2000 in total for sale. I'm sorry if that doesn't answer everything. There are some things we're going to announce officially and I don't want to jump the gun before that.

Rough timing for those of us in Asia, but worth waking up for, I think! =)

Thanks for the comment and I'm glad to hear it. It's been a lot of work to create the deck, but the joy is see the other interest in it. I'm going to try to run a contest or something for a signed deck from me for The Hive. I've just got to think the logistics through first.

I went in for 3 sets.

Do early orders get low numbers? :)

I want to thank everyone for their support. I swear I feel like a broken card, but honestly I'm not sure what else to say. I'm a bit speechless as I've been watching sales number on the site. It's pretty crazy and amazing. Now I know how Paul felt when the Zenith were out.

@bamabenz

I know you asked about the registration on the Mana thread, but I figured since it's Hive related. I'd answer it here as not to side-track the Mana thread. The Hive does have a thin border. I honestly don't know how thin it is without measuring as when I did the design on my computer, the file I was working with was probably 3-4 times the size of the actual size needed. The only two thin border deck I have on me are the Moriarty v1 and Black Whispering Imps, which both have thin borders and The Hive is just a slightly bit thinner.

I've only got two decks on me. One of each colour pulled off as "samples" sent before the main shipment to show us how the decks turned out. For the Red Hive that I have, if you do a riffle of the corner, it's really really good. There might be one or two card that "jump", but it's very small and really not noticeable unless you riffle a few times and are looking for it. I find the same thing for my Blue Hive.

Thanks for asking Rob. We actually did really well. The first few hours we had some minor cart issues as the system (we're using Shopify's system so I'm glad nothing really "broke") was processing too many orders at once so sometimes it gave out errors that we were out of a certain item. Sales are still going strong and I'm honestly still a bit awed, dazed and amazed at the response to the deck.

I rarely get so excited for a deck that I can't wait for it to arrive in the mail, however this is one of those rare occasions. Absolutely gorgeous work, I hope you stay in the business of designing playing cards, Brendan.

I normally don't like blowing kings wild own horn. But I don't mind talking great about Brendan. The hive in my opinion is was of the nicest, both in quality and design, decks of cards out there right now. The courts are fresh and interesting and also well designed. The tuck is very memorable and stands out a above all the other decks out right now. It is truly my pleasure to have Brendan with kings wild. His decks will be an incredibly fresh addition to my decks. As long as Brendan wants to keep designing cards I will keep championing him and making them a reality.

Never settle!

I'm currently In Chicago at the World's Fair of Money and will be back at the office on Sunday. The HIVE are scheduled to be delivered on Monday Morning. We will then start fulfilling all of the orders next week. They got a little delayed in the Los Angeles port because of the labor strikes, the same with my Independence LTD Collector's boxes. The HIVE actually traveled inside the black Independence boxes, so it will be very nice to see them both on Monday.

Got my shipment of The Hive today.

IMHO, the standout feature of this deck is the wonderful colors. The green shading on the spades is beautiful.
The indices are clear,  even though the blacks are not true black and the reds aren't the primary color of a standard deck.
Very playable. Its a 10!

p.s. I'd love to see these with a smooth finish.

@ bambenz

Glad you like them. I know a fair amount of the domestic orders from first day of fulfilment are arriving in people's hands today so I've been anxious to see what people think.

Yep, there's no "true" black in the deck. It's all very dark blues or browns. The smooth finish would be cool to do and maybe something to consider for the next deck in the series.
