Title: The Tungstene deck
Post by: xela on November 18, 2011, 09:53:19 PM
Attainable only via the v4 Variety Box from Dan & Dave, it seems. http://shop.dananddave.com/variety-box.html (http://shop.dananddave.com/variety-box.html)

This is the case for now. What are your speculations?

I'm guessing a deck that the twins are promoting and like to use like the Absolut and Massa decks.  :-[

Yeah, massa handling is really bad.
And there is so many playing cards out there that we never heard of.

the Tungestene deck was designed in France and printed by the US Playing Card Company. They handle similar to the new Bikes - so not bad.

Massa out of the box is the best deck you can ever use. Massa after a few hours is a horrible, sticky mess.

Really? I have had the massas in my use for about 3 hours of constant use and they handle like any other deck would after 3 hours, a bit sticky but still good.

My variety box was shipped yesterday, I'll post more info when I receive it, unless someone beats me to it. :)

These will be avaible for mass purchase Friday or will they be limited and hard to get? I kind of like the box, might pick a couple up. It looks like things are calming down (with the exepyion off black friday and these limited decks are easy to acquire. :D

This deck actually doesn't look bad. I'm not a fan of the constant releases, but this one looks very different. The backs looks very different, I would love to get a detailed picture of them. Looks like Dan and Dave make up part of the lightbulb/hour glass. This should be an interesting deck.

Dan and Dave are going to have to start a deck of the week club for us to keep up with it all haha  :-X

I'd join their club if they gave you two of each deck, but it's pretty useless otherwise for my collection tastes.

Me too. I pretty much never buy just one of a deck so why should I only get 1 from that? I agree with you completely

Those actually look like FUN cards.

Am I the only person who noticed that the card back design as shown on the box has several QR codes as part of the design?  Anyone curious as hell just where those codes would take you?

Very observant of you. maybe if anyone has a really good quality photo editor, the can blow up the picture to a size big enough to scan.

Damn. Someone was high.

Probably from the Dan and Dave brand marijuana that's being released in the coming weeks.

It looks more like a gaff deck, and why the one way back.

They should of made an EXTREMELY subtle one way back. Instead of both bucks on one side, the should of put one twin on each side in the same exact positions. THAT would be an insane one way back, even for the magicians.

The front of the box has a few QRs as well.  A QR code is actually designed to retain enough data in a partial image to remain functional, like in cases where a code on a box got damaged in shipping or something.  If someone can tweak that picture, the codes as they are might just be scannable.

Was it not reported that D&D Tweeted that the release would be Friday, Dec 2??  Who reported that Tweet??  12:00 PM (midnight) is no longer Friday.
The best way to promote a subscription service (a deck a month) is to produce a deck only available through said subscription service.  Think about that!

So Dan and Dave mentioned on twitter that they would have a new release tonight and so far I don't see anything "new", but I did notice that they are selling the monarchs. Is that what they mentioned? Or is this deck being released? Looking forward to this deck because it looks fun and different!

Just bought one from the Dan and Dave store.  $26.95 per deck + tax + shipping brought it to a grand total of $35.17.
Ouch.  Perhaps I will rethink the deck-a-month subscription service.

glad I didn't open my deck from the variety box...I'm not really that impressed by these. The faces remind me of an old cartoon from Adult Swim (can't remember which one). I'm thinking a trade/sell down the road. There are better decks coming out right now (like the vortex ;) ...you can just throw an extra deck in with my shipment Alex) and despite these decks being of french origin (I know they were printed by the USPCC but I'm assuming they were shipped to france 1st and then to DandD) sticking a $20 something dollar price tag on these was a little questionable.  Take for instance BMPoker, He is currently charging 16.95 for 1 deck of Bicycle Samurai.  I did a little cost analysis and by the time you add shipping and the cost of the decks (not to mention the dollar is in the toilet compared to the euro) he is only making maybe 1-2 dollars a deck.  That is pretty high for a new deck but as a business person (PC!) he is walking out on limb to purchase decks that some of us may not have otherwise had access to, for only 1-2 dollars a deck I can respect that! But as someone mentioned $35.00 (with the shipping)....at least at E you get some nice decks when you purchase your Ltd, gold arcane, etc.  >:(  There I'm through with my rant now!!!

bmpokerworld is an ass! I am a long time customer of his and have spent hundreds of dollars on his site and now because I cancelled 1 order (which I sort of placed by mistake) and inquired about making a change to another order he is not allowing me to buy anything from him on Ebay and is not responding to my emails. This is no way to treat a good long time customer!!! Stay away from his site and go to the1eyedjack.com or better yet my sponsor pokerstud52 on Ebay!! Sorry from being off topic a bit.

Nonetheless I did get this deck and now it is apparently not on their site anymore, did they run out already?

If you haven't already read 52 cartes, I also got confirmation by writing to Dan and Dave's customer service department - Tungstenes will be available on their site sometime next week (wait it's after midnight - THIS week).  I wasn't given the exact day, but by Saturday you will have a chance to buy these.

Now I just have to think of what the heck else I'd like to go with them.  D&D have absolutely no shortage of GREAT books.  Best magic library I've seen anywhere online or in person.

(I'm so happy my holiday bonus from work came last week!)

Although BM is a great site/guy, what puzzles me is why his prices are so high scale - if he buys in bulk, shouldn't his prices to relatively low?

Post by: Don Boyer on December 06, 2011, 01:01:15 AM
BM Poker World has one of the better deck selections out there.  Yes, some of their decks are more expensive than the competition, but some are actually cheaper.  I've done price comparisons between them and the1eyedjack - it varies by deck as to whether one's cheaper or they're both charging the same price.

Why are the deck so costly if they're buying in bulk?  Perhaps it's because the site owners are running a business and not a charity...  It's the cost of the deck, plus the cost of the electricity, the storage space, the computer and Internet services you need to run a business online, and perhaps a bit of profit tossed in.  They're often buying at retail when it comes to rare decks, unless they get a Kickstarter to back or cut a deal with the deck company.  A quality deck in short supply and high demand will always end up costing a bit more - progressively more the more rare and sought-after a deck is.

You always have the freedom of choice to not purchase from them.  If you think these decks can be sold cheaper, then by all means, open up your own shop and see for yourself.  I'd love to buy decks at a cheaper rate...

Does anybody know if they will actually release this deck? I heard they sold some because the link was accidentally leaked and it was on their website for a little while by mistake. I head rumors they would have an official release this week I think?

I'm pretty confused on what's happening with this deck and maybe somebody who knows what's up can help me out.

Thanks!

I wanna know in what price.
But I'm upset that they release decks like every 2 weeks.
Why don't they just release all of them at once. I really hate to pay multiple shippings, and I cant' risk decks I want to sold out, waiting for an unknown future deck.

yuh shipping is so annoying for international costs and i wish they had more variety boxes i hesitated too long on the v4 box now i totally regret it sigh* :(

A price would be helpful. Although, I highly doubt I'll be buying from the D&D store. As I've mentioned before, these websites charge way too much for international shipping. It's cheaper to wait for a local UK site to get them in stock, or even an eBay seller sometimes.

I'll have some of D&D's Fulton's available, if any international buyers want to make a deal - I'll post it when I have them.

Yes, a price would be good, but D&D never charge a great deal for their decks - premium prices, not outrageous prices (coughDAVIDBLAINEWHITELIONSREDcough).

I think this belongs in the trades and sales section. or in the fulton's card thread

I agree that its unique but that whole QR code thing is not attractive at all in my opinion. I will probably pick 2 up do do a review and to have in my collection but I'm not interested in the deck

I understand; it's a simple matter of preference. I like the QR code design, and you don't. Although I can see where you're coming from. They're not the most aesthetically pleasing design to use for a deck of cards, for sure.

I think this deck looks better than a lot of other designs. It's different, new, and refreshing. Sure, some people aren't going to like it. It's all about taste, and people will have different opinions on the deck, but I think it's one of the better releases this season

Already bought one of these on their site last Friday and apparently it has shipped out although it did cost like $26 or whatever it was.

On a side note I see they are just beginning to ship out the Fulton Clip Joint cards, don't know why they bothered to sell those weeks ago when they only got them like today. I guess they just had to get in on the Black Friday Frenzy!

I finally received my Variety box V4! :)

So while I will not open this deck until we have more information on availability, I just took some pictures of the box and I scanned the QR codes :)

Front : http://i.imgur.com/4VB9y.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/4VB9y.jpg)
The front has a design that looks like QR codes but is not.

Back : http://i.imgur.com/wqJpH.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/wqJpH.jpg)
The back has 2 sets of QR codes.

The top has 3 different codes : They read 'Henri et Jacques' , 'Le 16 Février 2011'  and 'un jeu peut en cacher un autre !' that last phrase translates to 'A game can hide another'

The bottom 3 QR codes read : 'Tungstene' , 'Positiver, insister, réussir' which I would translates to 'Seeing the bright side (It's the closest I could think for "Positiver"...), Insist, succeed' and 'Jacoto et Riton' Which I would guess are nicknames for Henri and Jacques...

Bottom : http://i.imgur.com/XCxst.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/XCxst.jpg)
Now on the bottom we see a single QR code which reads 'Un jeu peut en cacher un autre !' once again.
The text next to the QR codes translates to :
Tungstene, it's the link.
Jaques & Henri, the creators.
The light is the idea.

Once we have more information on availability and pricing, I might open this deck and order a few more. If that happens I'll post more pictures and I'll try to scan all the QR codes and translate them for you :)

Now that is a deck that sticks out from the crowd. Although I don't like the fact of putting QR codes on the back of the deck, I like the creativity. Also, I like the involvement this deck has to do with technology. I believe this is one of the first decks that have ever done that. Amazing effort guys! Looking forward to see the release.

Yeah that makes sense with all the new decks coming out. I'm expecting this one to be a limited release (almost every deck is now-a-days) so I'm sure I'll pick some up when they release... if they release haha

The deck is IN RELEASE NOW - I just ordered two.  It's not cheap: $19.95 a pack.  Still cheaper than originally thought, but not cheap by any means.  For some frakkin' godsforsaken reason, they decided to bury the order page for these decks on their site without including them in the "playing cards" list.  They could have been up there for days.

Turns out that these decks were a private order for a couple of graphic artists from the south of France, Jacques Denain and Henri de Saint Julien.  No apparent connection to magic or cardistry - it just looks like they decided to make a unique-looking deck of cards...  Only a small, limited number are up for sale, according to D&D.

Try this link - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, it's really bizarre:
http://shop.dananddave.com/tungstene.html

If that fails, just do a site-wide search for "tungstene" - the only two hits you'll get will be the VBv4 and this deck.  Even if you don't want to order them at that price, the page does have some new photos of the cards that I haven't seen around yet.

So, I gotta choose 2 decks instead.

I think $20 per deck from a company like Dan and Dave is insulting.

I would also feel the same way if T11, E, or any other major card distributor did this.

I will not be purchasing this deck, or any others from Dan and Dave is they continue down this path.

That'd actually be pretty smart. Make the site ready to go, with a crazy high price, so if anyone hacks the site and finds the links early (as we all know you love to do) they will have to pay extra for cheating.

I agree it would be a smart thing to do....but you can hardly say that guessing a URL or finding a unlinked page on a website is hacking.

I think the pricing was what it was because the deck is NOT one of their own.  It's just a rare deck they stumbled across.  You wouldn't fault Lee Asher for selling Jerry's Nugget decks for more than he paid, right?  The description said they were out of the personal stock of these two artists and were never intended for general sale, similar to some of the Blaine decks.

That sounds a little bogus, about the "accident."  Remember, their own customer service rep was telling me two Fridays ago that they'd be out last week.  I think they're just drumming up some hype to get people drooling a bit more over them.

For higher or lower price, whoever bought them now, myself included, did indeed get a "pre-release."  Some rumors were circulating that the initial asking price for them was $26.95, and I got two for $19.95 - seemed like a deal to me, despite that they're expensive.  But they're one of the most unique decks out there - I've never seen any deck using QR codes and "spilled pips" in their design.  Spilled pips are usually reserved for gaff cards!

Maybe I'll post some pictures and a brief review when I get them.
Title: Re: The Tungstene deck

Yeah, I bought it because I think that was the main release of the deck.
They told me that it would be an official release last week.
I don't think it's an accident.

However, they will release it again next month, and they don't know the price yet.

I think some bidders are camping on this one, waiting for a last minute snipe bid.  No way it's going to sell for just $6 a deck.

People are probably camping it out. I have those snipe bids, they always get me at the last minute, whether I'm buying or selling. When i sold something, I list is at like $9.99 for the start, I really want it to sell a lot higher, but the only bids that come in are the snipe bids for only a few cents more. Ugh!

With over two and a half days left in that auction, they're now at TWO-HUNDRED FORTY dollars.  That's the twenty bucks a deck mark, and they'll likely go up more.  People are chomping at the bit for this one; makes me wish I'd bought more than just two.

The email from D&D arrived 11pm EST.  Three things:
- They "found" and are now selling some hidden S&M V6 decks in the back of a warehouse (sh'yeah, riiiiiiight...)
- They also "found" the last remaining copies of the "twothousandten" DVD, also for sale
- They created Variety Box the Fifth, whose only distinctive additions are IAOCP and Cincinnati-made Arrco and Stud decks.  The rest are fairly recent releases that anyone around here who wanted them probably already got, and much of which is even still for sale.

They also said newsletter subscribers are getting FIRST CRACK at these items before the gen-pop.

I'm tempted to get the DVD, but not outrageously so.

And no, there were no Tungstene decks in this release.  I'm guessing early next year on those.

UPDATE: when searching on the site, only the twothousandten DVD doesn't turn up.  The V6 S&M is only being sold BY THE BRICK at $129.95.

If you search using "2010",  the DVD comes up.

I think it will end up more than $100. But it's still cheap even then.
Just checked back on the ebay auction on these and they are up to $127.50!! Which is over ten bucks a deck.

It was sold in D&D for $20 a deck, so no surprise.

I just found this bidding goes for $240 per brick!

Both auctions appear to be offered by the same seller - or two different sellers who just happen to be in the same city in Malaysia...

I just checked and found that it was the same auction.
The $72 came to $240 very fast!
I couldn't believe that.

Same?  Isn't one on ebay.co.uk and the other on ebay.com in the States?

It's the same seller and it's at the same price with 27 people bidding, isn't it?

I guess it is the same.  Didn't realize you could run the same auction in more than one country.

$240 for a brick of cards that will be released for probably cheaper and will be fairly easy to get at release...  thats crazy!

Wow $20 per deck is a lot - considering it's a pre-order. I can't believe people will actually pay that much just for a brick!

Not entirely.  You get bragging rights, you're "first on your block", etc.  Some people go for that sort of thing.  But the fact that it's a pre-release sale and they won't arrive until next month...  I thought Ebay had rules about selling something you didn't actually possess.

Hopefully it isn't too late to post again on this thread, but has anyone heard anything else about this deck? Everyone was talking about how it was going to have another release, but is this still true?

Assuming this info is correct, there's no need to guess - it will come out in January:

i asked about them and

Hello Zagan,
Only a limited amount were put up, accidentally I might add. We will formally release a limited batch next month when we can finalize an agreement with the artists.
 Cheers,Dan

Looks like a confirmation from Dan Buck himself...

So - you got the extra bonus of being first among the first on the block to have the deck.  I paid $20.  Who knows what the real going rate will be?

(We will - next month!)

They announced a NEW YEAR'S EVE sale?  Are they nuts?  I thought they WANTED to sell these things.  They're having enough trouble selling things out since the S&M series ended.

Yea, I'm surprised at that too. But they have less than 1000 of them, so it shouldn't be hard to sell them.
But I'm going to be on a plane at the time of the release :(

Does anyone know what they sold for, 'cause they seem to have gone FAST.  I'm just curious - it sets the market value to a certain extent.
