Title: Favorite Magicians
Post by: theaceofskates on October 06, 2011, 04:59:55 AM
So guys,
Lets hear a list of some of your favorite magicians. I doesn't need to just be card magicians. It can be stage magicians/cardists too.

David Stone. I love his performance.

Derren Brown, Penn & Teller, Ricky Jay, James Randi, Criss Angel...

Yeah I'm kidding with Angel; I can't watch him without cringing.  All pretty mainstream but I really do think they're the best at what they do.

Criss angel is more like an entertainer more than magician.

Yes we do. They are entertaining to watch, funny, and have their television on Discovery Channel. It's not about magic, but it's still pretty good.

I love that show, but the show on Discovery Channel is much more appropriate.

I love that show! I've watched every episode. This is my favorite magician from the show:

I HIGHLY recommend you watch it. It is 10 minutes long, but worth every second. It is pure comedy magic, and actually pretty good.

I guess if you have something against nudity or language, which doesn't make much sense to me but that's your own look-out.  I think BS is a more important show; it's real, serious issues (well, sometimes) that people have overlooked or been duped by rather than just urban myths.  I didn't know about the Discovery channel show; I'm going to watch it now; thanks!

I have a few, all for different reasons.

Penn and Teller: I find their comedy hilarious and their, well guess mostly Penn's, stage presence amazing. I really like their attitudes towards magic and their stage act is great

Lance Burton: The class he brings to his act is inspiring; it's great to watch the grace and nostalgia that he brings to his shows.

Jeff McBride: He brings such creativity to his act, as well as being incredibly skilled. His show is more of a performance piece than just a magic act.

David blaine and derren brown, blaine got me into magic and I enjoy watching derren brown. I don't do magic anymore but I still enjoy to watch it performed. Flourishers? I'll have a think.

not a fan of david blaine either. just never really liked his performance.
Title: Re: Favorite Magicians

I think Blaine, while a very creative inventor, tries to hard to be aloof.  I hate his patter and attitude.  Same with Banacheck; amazing, amazing routines but no style (and talks a lot of nonsense much of the time, like Derren used to).

I forgot to mention Jerry Sadowitz before.  One of the best stand-up comediens in the world.  If you don't know him, you'll know his work because you probably have a few of his sleights in your routines.  I've seen him produce a good dozen cards from empty hands that never leave your line of sight, while doing stand-up.

Wow what a hard choice for me, so I'll just list my favourites that I've seen live :P

-David Copperfield (Yes I know its seems cliche but seriously Flying is the ultimate trick)
-Kevin James (Floating Rose live is so amazing, the smile on the childs face is priceless)
-Jeff Hobson (Best comedy magician I've ever seen, uses classics of magic but makes them so hilarious)

and the act at the top of my list to see is -

-Penn and Teller (Love their presentation style and sense of humour)

I think that in a general sense, comedy magicians are my favorite. Too bad I can't be as funny as them! :(

Haha at first I thought said "great gay", not that I have anything about gay people. I also really like PK as well as SL although the latter's tricks are sometimes overpriced in my opinion, especially ShiNag.

I like David Blaine, Penn & Teller, Daniel Garcia, Rich Ferguson, and as corny as it might sound to you, Brad Christian.  Brad was my first "instructor" in magic and I enjoy learning from his core set of videos.  I'm just glad he doesn't wear the friggin' eyeliner as much these days - damn, did that look bad...

I'm not a magician but I enjoy watching Ricky Jay a lot and a recent favourite would be Bill Malone. Jordan Lapping does not really shows his own routines but his patter is awesome and everything so smooth. Sam The Bellhop is one of the best tricks I've ever seen!

Am I the only one seeing the pattern that Penn and Teller seem to be nearly universally liked in the Discourse?  At a minimum they appear on more lists than any other magic act I can think of.
Title: Re: Favorite Magicians
Post by: hazofhorsham on February 17, 2012, 09:57:53 PM
I think it's their age (been in magic for 25+ years) and their sense of humor that makes them attractive. I mean David Blaine is a genius but in his early career he was a bit creepy, I saw an interview where he didnt speak for ages and it just creeped me out - and Cris Angel is just a knock off in my opinion, P+T are just classical and funny. But Richard Turner... C'mon he really is the master.

If you like Turner, you should also like Steve Forge, Jason England, etc. Oh... they don't know karate.

He became famous late because his previous DVDs are in Spain.
But then he came to EMC and thats make people asking about him, and he released Utopia in english. Really great dvd sets.

Currently if you ask a Chinese (Taiwan, China, Hong Kong) who is his favorite magician, there is only an answer and that's why I don't want to reply in this thread.
