Playing Card Plethora / NEW DECK -- Aurum from Encarded
« on: April 27, 2012, 09:30:41 AM »
I did a search for Aurum and I couldn't find a thread.. so here we go..

Encarded has loaded a few teaser pics of the Aurum deck.

Encarded writes...

"
Aurum is the next deck from Encarded and is currently in heavy design and development. Aurum will be quite different from Tendril and will incorporate even more new ideas in custom playing card design.
Aurum is designed to be several things: First, evoke the feeling of being hand drawn, not digitally perfect. Second, make it intricate enough that you might need to hold the design close and really examine it to see the details. Third, have it be elegant and rich while maintaining perfect symetry, handling and visual interest. Finally, an idea that I wanted to pursue was to create the entire back design with one, single, continuous line flowing from one side of the cards all the way through the middle, mirroring perfectly in the “organic symmetry” we introduced in Tendril.
Below are some select sneak peek images of Aurum in its development phases. You can see some aspects of the new and special features, such as a hand-drawn continuous line back with organic symmetry, subtle pattern borders, metallic gold and purple inks in a rich tapestry design and the face patterns first seen in Tendril.
We will add more details and views of Aurum as the design progresses. Please note that any/all of these designs may change during the course of the development and are provided for your enjoyment only. No one, not even me, knows exactly where we will end up. That is one of the lovely mysteries of the design process."

The Conversation Parlor / ================ > CBJ's Official Thread
« on: March 15, 2012, 12:50:26 PM »
 Hey guys,

Just thought I'd start a personal thread for non-card related stuff (maybe on occasion some card stuff haha)

Feel free to comment on my posts, or if you have questions you want to ask.. go ahead!

  SO.. here we go..

I rarely pony up the cash to go to an actual theatre to see a movie, I find the prices have gotten out of control... and people around me are always noisy.

But, over the last week, I ended up going twice.  Once just my wife and I, and once with another couple.  Both movies are what I call "handheld-cam" type movies... Project X, and Chronicle.

We REALLY enjoyed both movies.  The way the "handheld-cam" is much MUCH better than some other movies I've seen like this i.e Cloverfield.

I highly recommend Chronicle.  It's about 3 teenagers who stumble upon something in the ground... and they end up getting telekinetic powers.  The story is great except for a not-needed love interest story line.

Project X is about these seniors in high school that want to throw an “epic” party…  Let’s just say things get out of hand.

Hey guys,

I picked up a set of the cardboard tuckboxed versions of the Bicycle Prestige decks.

But, I noticed something right away.. the cellophane is wrapped differently on them.
If you look at the pics, you can clearly see that I can lift the cellophane and put something in there.

This deck is a little thicker and heavier than a regular Bicycle deck because the cards are plastic.. do you think they had to use a different machine to wrap them??  maybe outsource it?

Playing Card Plethora / Another closeout/special from Bicycle/USPCC
« on: March 01, 2012, 03:04:36 PM »
Hey guys,

Not my cup of tea, but there is another deck up at the Bicycle site for 99 cents.

the Pink Harley Davidson Butterfly deck

Here: http://www.shopbicyclecards.com/Pink-Harley-Davidson-Butterfly-P139C55.aspx

I did a quick check online, and this is well below market value of $5-7

I found them retail at these sites

I wonder if Bicycle will continue to have closeout/special decks.

Playing Card Plethora / 3 NEW DECKS -- Bicycle: Jacked Up!
« on: February 20, 2012, 04:45:11 PM »
Another new deck coming out this April!

"
Apple To Change Toys: Bicycle Jacked Up! Sure you could just pull out a normal deck of 51 cards (old decks always seem to have one card missing) to play War or Solitaire of Hearts. Or you can spice up these pedantic pasteboard pastimes with a Bicycle iPhone/iPad app. A QR code on these special Bicycle-brand cards ($6 each, April) activates the app, and special cards in each deck printed with a QR code are held up to the phone to introduce new game-play wrinkles or rule changes. This deck will be on Kickstarter tomorrow!

From UC:

"A new Bicycle Spectrum deck is in the works.  This is a true rainbow deck, in that the 808 Rider backs are printed in a full color spectrum, one unique color per card!  When the cards are spread, a beautiful color rainbow spectrum appears before your eyes.  The box is pure eye candy.

I have no vested interest in this other than as a collector who had heard about this fantastic deck.  It is truly unique, and not only is it collectable; it also has a number of clever magic applications.

The designer is putting it out through the Kickstarter site.  However, I have heard that its production is not dependent on Kickstarter funding. That is, the designer has already placed a paid order with the USPC Co., meaning that the decks will definitely be available within the next couple months to Kickstarter backers.

Here’s a copy/paste link to a cool video preview put out by the designer:

I would have to say that this is most likely a one of a kind set...  and at a  starting bid of $6400, it had better be.

Still sealed!  Amazing!

Playing Card Plethora / Typography Playing Cards
« on: January 14, 2012, 04:18:46 PM »
The 52 Types deck of playing cards was created as a quick reference tool for designers.

Each card is designed with its own font. Ace through jack shows the majority of each font’s family while ten through two was given a more radial design. The cards were designed to still be used as a traditional deck of cards while doubling as a cherished item by designers. This project was accompanied with a poster showing the entire deck. Earlier this year it was awarded with a Golden Addy in San Diego's local round.

Designed by Adam Bauer.

Not a USPCC deck
