Playing Card Plethora / Re: Smoke and Mirrors v7
« on: November 24, 2012, 02:56:43 AM »
I really think it hurts the entire series overall, since the amount of different decks in the series essentially doubled overnight, and there are 60000 extra decks in the series that used to be quite limited.  I don't think I would mind as much if they only released a reprint of only the v6s or even the v5s, but to go all the way back to v3s is really just diluting the value of owning any individual deck in the series, resale or not (again, v1 and v2 aren't really affected by this and I think their value won't drop).

so yes, it hurts resellers, although I and pretty much everyone here don't care about them. It hurts people who only wanted v7s, but it also hurts people who already own the originals, imo. I don't actually have any Smoke and Mirrors besides v6 so don't take this like I'm complaining about my own decks, but this is just in my opinion somewhat of a downfall of a once prestigious series of playing cards.

Someday they will be avaliable in other ways.
The decks must be printed at least 1k-5k.

whoever runs their facebook page said they won't be available any other way

just like the LTD deck was only available in 2011

chances are this deck will be available on ebay for much less than the total cost of this deal, so if you just want the deck I'd say just wait it out.

You really think somebody is going to spend $147 for this and then sell the deck on Ebay and for much less than that...yeah right.

someone who is primarily a magician might care more about the other stuff than the deck. I'm not saying it will go for cheap, but certainly it will be quite a bit less than what the membership is on E.

I don't think you guys are getting the point though. - It's a membership, and there not forcing you to buy anything else.

With the membership, you get:

1 - Artifice Black Club Deck - Value: Unknown
1 - Black Club Storage Box -  Value: Unknown
1 - HALO Fiber Optik Band -  Value:$15

You also get free downloads, discounts, and buying opportunities. I actually like it. It's probably the best Black Friday sale happening in the playing card download. Although none was perfect, I believe this one stood above all others.

to me, and I'd guess a good number of other collectors, the rest of the stuff is worthless. I honestly could not care less about any of the other stuff offered, so I'd essentially be paying let's say 125 dollars (with the points added and x% off) for a deck of cards and some other stuff of unknown resale value but likely nothing close to what I paid for it, which is a hassle to resell anyway. On top of that I get "special access" to spend even more obscene amounts of money on other stuff I don't care about.

Just give me the deck. I was about to make a decent sized purchase with these and fathoms and sultans, but 147 dollars to get this deck is way too much, regardless of the extras.

and really, a lot of the stuff you can't even sell. The membership card, downloads, access to the extra store, and early access to products are all essentially unsellable, unless I'm missing something. You're left with a case and wristband, which will almost certainly not make up for the cost of the membership, and a 5% off which isn't even as good as the 10% off I use now

I feel really let down with these Black Friday sales right across the board. Even more let down with this one too.

the only one who got it right was david blaine, high shipping costs notwithstanding

They're going to make those collector boxes unlimited?
If there unlimited, than what's the point in calling them a "collector" box?

marketing

I mean it's not like they're making money directly from sales on the previous versions anymore, so this really seems like one last attempt to cash in on the smoke and mirrors brand for them. It's a shame though, because they basically had one of the most well-known and respected brands in playing cards, took it out back and shot it in the head by flooding the market with another 60,000 decks.

I guess that's really it for the series. Probably won't matter to D&D since they can just laugh all the way to the bank, but it's gonna hurt the value and collectability of the rest of the series (except maybe for the first two editions, but even then I could see them being worth less)

just saw a "review" of these on the T11 youtube page, and I have to say that the box is probably one of the most awesome card boxes I've seen. The back design is pretty cool as well, although it suffers from the "two circle" design that I'm pretty sick of. Disappointed with standard everything else as well. idk considering how many things I could potentially buy today, I'm probably gonna pass on these for now, especially since they don't seem like a limited edition, but I might get them in the future.

reprints of all the old versions? If they were originals then this would be a pretty insane deal (v4-v6 can already run you over 70 bucks on ebay, so add in the even rarer v3s and the new v7s and it works out to a lot less than you'd pay for for each deck individually). 10000 reprints each is basically a joke, especially for 85 bucks a set. If they release the deck individually then I'll consider getting them but this is just a huge letdown imo.

shipping for me for 4 decks was about 7.50. Not exactly cheap but that seems to be pretty standard compared to other retailers, so I don't think they're trying to recoup costs with extra shipping.

is this real life?

got 4 decks of these. I wanted to get a couple black label WLs too but that ended up doubling my shipping to 15 bucks for whatever reason, so I just went with these. 2.75 per deck???? screw D&D with whatever BS they were trying to pull with the v7s, this is the black friday deal.

well I'm already planning on getting split spades and S&M v7, and now maybe this depending on how the rest of the deck looks. If theres a really good deal on E or TBC I might be super broke by tomorrow night

I'm glad they were straightforward with it. They'll probably use them for promotional purposes but I don't think they'll have the same value as previous 5000 run decks they've done.

I will say that I think the design is pretty cool, but the lack of pips and court faces really does make the deck feel like it's incomplete as some people have already mentioned. With so many decks coming out, it's hard to spend another ten bucks plus shipping on a deck that doesn't even have faces, which is a shame because the rest of the deck combined with some custom artwork had a lot of potential to be an awesome design

probably gonna be a pass for me

not nearly as bad as 29.95 for a custom tuck box though. Don't get me wrong, I love the decks encarded has put out, but 11.95 for a very limited deck isn't exactly outrageous. That said, I will refer to my posts earlier in the thread about why I don't really like the idea in general, but given the circumstances I don't there's enough reason to get too up in arms about it.

hopefully "fully custom" doesn't just mean a recoloring of the court cards either. I think the blue court cards on the blue tune deck were pretty cool but I almost always prefer more customization than less. 11.95 per deck should mean full customization imo

Evan reported it on his FB page but I guess no one thought to make a topic

Basically for E has a new deck for 7 bucks. It's on a "pre-sale" right now until some time Friday, and then will be fully released on the 23rd (which could be black friday, I haven't checked). A 50 dollar purchase before this friday will get you an LTD deck as well, which isn't a bad deal if you're looking for one. I actually was planning on getting the Sultan deck anyway since I already have the treasury deck, so that plus the fathom deck plus maybe a couple other things would get me to 50 bucks pretty easily.

The fathom deck itself looks pretty cool. I might try to look for some better pictures before making a purchase becuase there isn't really a good shot of them right now, but I don't think it would be necessary because from what I can tell, the design looks pretty interesting. I think it looks better than the republic deck from what I can tell.

Sr15, it's entirely possible that this deck was being designed for a magician who wanted to reserve most of the black ones for his personal use.  And even if that isn't the case, there's still just 101 decks going into circulation.  If more get released, no biggie - the market value will go down because they're not as hard to obtain as they once were.

I suppose that could be possible, but I don't think it would be the case in this scenario. I agree on the second point, although the only reason I could possibly see to hold out on decks in this scenario would be to have the price as high as possible for each release. Not exactly a bad business model, although it might piss off some people who got the decks early only to see the price and rarity dropped later. Just to clarify, I made that post when I thought the entire run of this deck would be 101 decks out of 500 due to the original wording of the OP, not just a special edition of the deck being 101/500.

Quote
Extreme rarity does not always automatically equal valuable.  A simple example: compare the Bicycle Black Ghost 1st Edition with the Black Crown Deck and the Bicycle Gold Seal New Fan Back.  Each one of these decks were made in a print run of exactly the same size: 5,000.  If you were looking to buy them from a fellow trader, however, the first deck goes for around $100, give or take, the second is perhaps $20 and the last one is still selling at nearly the original retail.

I mean I'm an economics major so you aren't telling me anything that I don't already know. There is obviously a difference between a print run of 5,000 and a print run of 500, especially when there are only 101 being released. Look at the pricing on the special editions of the Aurum deck. It wouldn't be unreasonable to think that Aloys saw the price at which the 75 deck edition of Aurum was selling at and would try to do something similar by releasing only a small number of decks.

Quote
One could argue, based on your perspective, that ALL limited-edition decks are unfair because there's only so many of them to go around.

I never said it was unfair. I just said that a) it's not the best business model, especially when done by companies without a big stock of unlimited run decks like T11 or E, and b) it leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it ends up being a negative for collectors.

Again, keep in mind that I made my original post based on the assumption that the 500 was the entire run of the deck and not just one edition. I still don't necessarily like the idea of severely limiting decks because in general it artificially drives up value, no matter how many anecdotal situations you bring up. Obviously it doesn't drive up the value as much anymore given the trend for everyone and their mother to put out a limited edition deck run these days, but just like a 2,500/5,000 deck run used to have a deck be considered rare, companies may decide to limit deck runs to an even greater degree to spark that "rare" appeal for collectors. I used the example of the Aurum deck earlier, although that was more from a manufacturing circumstance than any deliberate action taken by Encarded, but it is entirely possible and even likely that we see deck runs become more and more limited as numbers that used to be considered rare become common or even an industry standard. As I said, I only see this as being a negative for deck collectors as a whole.

There are 3000 decks total... 2500 red.. and 500 black.

here's the post I made on FB

"My friends over at Aloys Design Studio will soon be releasing their second deck design… The Floral Decks. These decks will come in 2 colors with a total of 2500 red decks printed, and only 500 black decks. Only 101 Black decks will be released for sale (limited to 2 per person)

The Floral Decks will have the following features:
*100% custom artwork ( more than 1800 hours spent on the design )
 *Bicycle stock & Linoid Finish
*Metallic ink on Tuckbox, backs, and faces
 *Thick tuck paper
 *Custom deck seal

They will also be releasing some Eco Floral Card Clips ( 80 total )

They’ll be launching their website next week with more info. If you’d like to order the Black Flower deck, you’ll be able to shoot them an e-mail through their site to make a request.

If you have any questions, you can send an e-mail to their staff. ( they will reply within 24 hours ) jessica93471@yahoo.com.my

ah that makes much more sense. well hopefully I can get at least 1 of the black decks if it's not priced too high. definitely looking forward to this deck

3 aurum decks plus shipping was $40 and some change for me. 3 sultan treasuries plus shipping was $44 and change.

you can leave a bad rating on ebay for a seller that charges extra in shipping to raise profits. Unfortunately I can't do that for Ellusionist

oh well

If you are referring to the ridiculously high prices before Sultan Treasuries were released to the public, then you can ask to get refunded the difference. If that's not what you're talking about, I apologise for my babbling

I was referring to that and I already got a partial refund through E, so no problems there anymore.

I want these freakin decks nowwwww
