The Conversation Parlor / Skype Group Chat
« on: January 29, 2012, 05:28:27 PM »
Hey guys.
I was just thinking, it seems quite a few of us seem to have Skype accounts. So, I thought it would be fun to have a Discourse Skype group chat for us all to chat in.
So, if you like the sound of that, then feel free to leave your username in a reply or a PM to me, and I'll add you to the group!
I think it'd be a great way for us to all get to know each other a bit more.

In all seriousness though i would think they are releasing a non limited edition one as soon as the limited edition ones sell out... or in 2 weeks like every other release.

I hope this is a non-limited version of the deck. And I also really hope this one has a more reasonable price. Then I might consider picking it up.

I see it!! Although that isn't a tiny detail, it's very hard to find. My mind just thinks that it is uniform and 1-way! I feel that not many people would catch that, but I could be wrong. Thanks for the picture and the explanation

Yeah, I was pretty amazed when I saw it for the first time, too. Makes you feel kinda dumb, that you missed something that's so blatant. And no problem!

massa deck also have a one way back

Where is it? At first glance I couldn't find anything. Do you have any pictures of it?

At the bottom of the cards, the pips that are at the bottom and half cut off are clubs, diamonds, hearts. When holding it this way round, the pips across the top are clubs, diamonds, hearts. So, when it's turned over, the pips along the top/bottom would be hearts, diamonds, clubs.
I've added in a picture to try and help explain.

I presume that 'availability' is how much time you have spare to use the Discourse in, right? I'll interpret it as that in the application, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I get the feeling he was indicating that his music school instituted their own grading system above 8.  It's not likely a nationally recognized one.  Imagine if a school allowed grades like "A++" or something like that...
Yeah, I guess. It just seems odd to me. I mean, if a school in England allowed an "A**" grade, I'd be pretty confused because it would knock the rest of their system off kilter - each previous grade would be easier to get, and you wouldn't quite know how to match it against other, nationally recognised grades.
But, I guess that doesn't really apply with music grades. Just seemed a little confusing, that's all.

Please change the topic name to include [ISO/Trade] at the beginning, as per the rules. Thanks!

So now we can notate it: "single use only, invalid for guest logins".

Lushbob, the Seasons code is valid.  It will work when the Seasons Deck website goes live, and will only be while supplies last - in other words, it's for the Seasons deck only, no other merchandise (assuming there will be any other merchandise).  That image I got by "liking" Seasons Playing Cards on Facebook; it's straight from the source.
Alright, thanks. I've updated it.
Sorry about the Seasons code - I read it on another thread before I saw your post with the picture, and I forgot to update it. Do you know what the website URL will be?

After I reached level 8 in England, I went to a higher level music course, and they gave levels 9, 10 and 11 based on their own standards. In the US, there are competitions where you can pass music levels up to 10 if you go to special competitions, and I'm 9 as well on that scale.
What kind of higher level music course? We only have grades 1-8, then we have music diplomas. No other levels are widely recognised.

Yeah, I was thinking that.  I'm grade 5 theory... well, I got 50ish% on the exam, so ALMOST grade 5 theory.
Haha ;) I've got grade 5 theory, too. I only passed marginally; I went from grade 0 to grade 5 with two months of fast-track teaching.

The idea of getting a custom deck with my pledge is certainly very attractive...
But with the minimum pledge being $30, I think I'll give this one a miss.

I am also a musician, a pianist, and have passed level 9 in the British and French grading system about 1 1/2 years ago.
Sorry, but in England, our music grades only go up to 8. So, you can't have got 9... ;)

Hey, Alex. Will these rewards still be in place once v2 is in public use?
Or will they instead be rewards that you can get by exchanging Fame in your store?

It's sounding like the D&D fancy code may be expired, but we need a solid confirmation of this.
Yeah, it seems to have expired for me, too. I'll put it up as a possible expiration.

I'm pretty sure it was made illegal because the chemical used was damaging to the environment.

Wow. That seems really odd to me. In the UK, we have graded exams that we take as we advance with our instruments. The grades start at 1, and go up to 8. It's common for people to be taking Grade 8 after about 8 or 9 years, depending on their age. If you start at a young age (for instance, I started when I was about 8 or 9), then you're usually about Grade 8 standard when you finish school, as long as you're a good musician and pretty dedicated (I've recently started the Grade 8 syllabus).
But, of course, that excepts people who are exceptionally talented - I have a friend who achieved a Grade 8 standard on Violin and Piano when he was about 11.
I'd find judging your musical ability by the amount of time you've played for to be pretty inaccurate - some of my friends have played for longer than me, and can't handle a basic rhythm/tune, and others have played for a few years, and are incredible. Are there no graded exams whatsoever for music in the USA?

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Inconsistencies between Tally-Ho tuckboxes?
« on: January 26, 2012, 04:05:06 PM »
Actually, the changeover was in 2009 - not that long ago.  Since playing cards don't have an expiration date, your transition pack was probably packed in '09 and sat around in a series of warehouses before reaching you.

Circle Backs came in transition boxes as well - but Circle Backs seem to be the more popular of the two designs, so their transition boxes are more likely to be in private hands by now.  In fact, in the 2011 and 2012 USPC catalogs you can buy Tally Ho decks in two types of bricks: a mixed red/blue Circle/Fan brick, and a mixed red/blue all-Circle brick.  If Fan Backs were as popular as Circle Backs, they'd probably carry all Fan Back bricks as well...
Was it only 2009? Golly. It seems a lot further back than that. But it's pretty interesting, to think that my deck has probably been sitting around for 3 years, waiting to be bought.
Are Circle Backs really the more popular? Huh. While I love both designs, I'd pick Fan Back over Circle Back any day.
Thanks for the explanation. Are these transition decks pretty common? Obviously they're sort of a one-off thing - I doubt any more will be printed/packaged, but are they at all uncommon/rare?

Four deep?! I thought it was two. That is unbelievable. I dont have words for how impressive that is.
Seconded!
Seriously, how many decks are on that bookshelf (roughly)? And how many Bee Watermelons do you have?  :o

I doubt it. And if they did, they wouldn't be nearly as good quality - the chemicals used in the finish are illegal now, if I remember correctly. Please, do correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh, I see. Yeah, both decks have black seals.
Firstly, how come they are still using transition boxes? The changeover was quite a few years ago now.
Also, why are the transition boxes only used for the Fan back decks, and not the Circle back decks? Or is it a simple matter of just happening to have more Fan back boxes left over?

I am a senior in College

Haha, I forget that Americans use 'grade' to mean different years in school. I meant music Grade 8. Or do you guys not do music grades?

I'm a guitarist.  I try to sing and fail miserably, so there's that.  Guitar is more of an activity pass time these days though, I don't play seriously anymore.
Yeah, I'm just learning guitar so I can play it casually. But, if I start enjoying it a lot, I might get a teacher and start playing it more seriously.

Professional musician, actually.  Well, play bass in a wedding band to subsidise my student loan, anyway.  I play pretty much anything that you don't breathe into.
Awesome. :) That's a nice plan to get some money. I might try doing something similar in a few years once I get a student loan that I'll have to pay off.

WOOO CLARINETIST!!!
I am a music education major. My primary is Clarinet and my secondary is Tuba.
Awesome! :D I'm guessing you're at least Grade 8, or the equivalent of?

Hey. I was wondering if anyone else here is a musician?
I play clarinet and piano, and I'm not too bad at singing. I can play ukulele pretty basically, I'm trying to teach myself guitar (I'm waiting until I have a little more time), and I can play some basic percussion. And I can play saxophone pretty well, too - it's effectively the same as clarinet.
So, any other musicians amongst you? Speak up here!
