Design & Development / Re: design program
« on: July 19, 2013, 07:25:11 PM »
Now the bigger question.  If you do all your art free hand, how do you intend to get it into the program?  Photography is tricky at best and scanners are.... scanners. blah!
The printer i have at my house is a printer copier a fax machine and a scanner so I would definitely scan it.[/color
I'd recommend learning Photoshop. For the sake of card design, you can do there everything that you can with illustrator. However, it also has an extremely large amount of other features that can propel you into other types of design.
I do have a basic understanding of both of them, but it is very basic, so I guess I will look into photoshop and if need be almost all of my school computers have almost all the adobe programs, so I guess I'll just have to scan and upload it onto photoshop (during a free period at school if necessary) and see how that goes, thanks for all the advice everyone.

Pirate Photoshop. If you succeed, buy it. Don't feel bad about it. Adobe could have put proper DRM ages ago into their programs. They don't because they know that no amateur would ever pay $600+ to learn how to do text effects.

Pretty much every successful designer I have ever known or talked to started out with a pirated copy.
So alex would you say that photoshop is better for designing a deck then illustrator? I'm not exactly sure which would be totally better so that's why I'm asking.

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Gaff cards

So quick question for everyone, what is everyone's favorite gaff card included with a deck of cards. Be it a double backer or a blank face, whatever is your preference.

Design & Development / design program
« on: July 18, 2013, 04:10:08 PM »
So I am currently working on a deck of cards and right now its all being hand drawn. I do want to do most of the details by hand since it's easier for me, but when it comes time to do the layouts and touch up the general design I will be needing a computer program to use for that. I have a little bit of experience with adobe photoshop and illustrator from a class at school but those are a little out of my price range, so i was just wondering what is a good design program for a deck design that isn't overly expensive, maybe from around free to about $20 would be ideal. Also preferably user friendly if possible.

That makes a lot of sense Don, and this is exactly why I asked about it here before actually designing the entire deck like that and then having to completely restart. Thank you for the feedback and maybe eventually making my deck better, Once I get the general design more finished I'll upload it for everyone to see and critic.

I have started work on a deck of cards recently and had an idea, and before I went through with this idea I wanted some feedback on the general idea first. So what this idea of mine is, is that instead of putting the numbers or the letters in the corners of each card you would write out the value. Like on the two of spades vertically down the card would be the word two followed by the spade like usual, so basically it would just be words instead of numbers on all the cards. So what is everyone's thoughts on this idea and if a deck did this would it add to or take away from the likely hood of you purchasing said deck.

That's actually very helpful I was able to find the empire deck which looks very awesome and amazing so there's one and I will keep up the search.

Playing Card Plethora / Fantasy themed decks
« on: July 02, 2013, 07:56:46 PM »
So I've already asked about good decks in general, and all the tips there were very useful and I think i added a few good ones to my future purchase list, but now I was just wondering if there are any good decks out there right now that have a more of a fantasy theme to them? Like either castles, swords, or maybe dragons, since I am slightly a fantasy nut and I think those would be cool. Like maybe the silver monarchs or the bicycle dragon backs, but other ones since I'm already looking into buying the monarchs.

Your description is way too vague for us to give you good, accurate suggestions. For example you imply that you love Ellusionist decks, whereas i would only recommend Rounders, Dealers and LTD as i dislike the whole Arcane/Artifice (except Artifice Tundra) series. Preference is entirely subjective! You might like simplicity, complexity, fantasy-like etc etc. Not to say that those are mutually exclusive, but you need to give us a bit more information for us to give you accurate suggestions!

Search up different ends of the stylistic spectrum such as NOC, Mana, Brite Neon (lel :p), Curator, Federal 52, etc etc and give us a better idea of what style you're going after.

Personally, i love elegance and sophistication/class so my favourite decks tend to convey those themes and the colours associated with it (Shades of premium blue, white and black). Examples include: Mana, JAQK, Aurum, Rounders, Monarchs, Blue Crown luxury, Smoke and Mirrors v5 just to name a few.

True i should have been more descriptive and that is my fault, but besides that everything so far seems to be helpful, and i have always found fantasy awesome, but simplicity is great as i love the Rounders and LTD that i happen to have, but some of the very detailed ones are good to, also usually white like decks are cool and also purple is always great, so maybe aurum then as someone already suggested. Elegance is nice as well which i find the artifice like that, but Mana you say, I'll look into that one. Well this should be enough to get me start in searching and I may build a list, thanks for your help everyone, and so far it was a good choice joining here and  I don't see that changing.
Final tip: make a budget for your cards and stick to it.  Your hobby shouldn't make you broke or miserable.
I'll remember that Don, that is actually quite spectacular advise thank you all, if there's anything else anyone still would like to add it's still welcome.

Rob that's kind of great that you said it in klingon, and Don the reason it's pengiun instead of penguin is because one time I just made an account for something and accidentally spelled it this way and for some reason I've just liked it and kept it.

What it seems to be for me is any deck of cards that is custom with a really cool looking design, which may make this a little harder as everyone's different on what they find "cool", but still just a cool designed cards that handles well enough so it can be used for magic, usually not an altered standard bicycle design, like a mandolin back deck.

So I have been collecting for a little while now, but my collection isn't that big or great. Also most of my decks, other then the vortex deck, are from ellusionist, so I would like to sort of branch out into other companies, if that makes sense. I'm just wondering what are some really good custom decks that everyone here on the discourse would recommend buying and adding to my collection. Preferable not rare ones only because those tend to be more expensive, so I'm just asking for everyone's thoughts on what are some great decks of playing cards that I should look into.

Feedback + Support / Avatar picture issues

I would like to upload one of my saved photos for my avatar but whenever I try to upload one it says, "Your attachment couldn't be saved. This might happen because it took too long to upload or the file is bigger than the server will allow." So I was just wondering what is the maximum file size and if that turns out to not be the problem then what is?

Introduce Yourself / Why hello there people.
« on: June 30, 2013, 07:52:59 PM »
Salve, hola, guten tag, bon jour, so now that I've said hello in Latin, Spanish, German, and French, hello everyone. I'm Max, or pengiun as it says on my account, you can call me either I don't mind either way. I am a resident of the United States, and I do really like to collect cards, even though my collection is quite small at this time, those cards that i collect I do use for magic, and the occasional cardisty here and there but mostly just magic. What got me into magic was just a few cheesy simple tricks my dad once showed me, and I'm pretty sure me wishing that the magic you see in fantasy books, movies, and things, like Merlin for example, was real and truly possible has kept me at magic, since magic tricks is the closest thing to that kind of stuff that is possible currently, and some "miracles" can actually be accomplished with a deck of cards. Where i heard about The Discourse was I was one of the people who funded and bought the vortex deck off of kickstarter, so really I heard of this from Alex himself I just have been very very very slow at finally signing up, but now I'm here, so hello everyone.
