great Idea!!! Add what he said...

I suggest one to show, one to save, one to open and display and one to practice with, one to practice torn and restored card, one to replace that one, one to frame, one for every room so you can always admire them, one to keep in your briefcase, one for the road, one in each pocket, one in the fridge, one in each sock, one for the front yard and one for the back, one for the garage, and one for a rainy day. and a spare one for each of the others mentioned.

that should cover you and then I could retire early.

most magic retailers will have them... my distributor is Murphy's magic supplies, this particular item isn't an exclusive so other retailers outside their customer base can get them as well.

I beleive there will be at least one or two card dealers online who will have them so far.

I will also post the uncuts on my site as I will have some available.

Thanks Don, yeah! What are you waiting for???  There's still a good percentage that haven't filled it out, we're getting geared up for shipping!!!

5
well there is the Kickstarter coupon code...

saves you a few bucks

type kickstarter into the coupon code there.

I was told by a few others that there's no issue with the cello smudging as well!

thanks!
BTW there will still be a few uncuts available on my site later, shortly after I get everything shipped etc.

Hey everyone... I'm quite a bit less experienced in the world of card collecting than most of you, with the SPECTRUM deck I've gotten many requests for signed decks.  One person asked me to "carefully" open the cellophane, sign the box and put the box back into the cellophane.  I know how much of a pain that is as I do an effect that requires that.

Is it common to sign ON the cellophane, or remove the cellophane and sign the box?
With several hundred decks to sign it will take FOREVER to remove and replace the box!

Thanks in advance!

Oh just for fun, if you haven't seen it yet, here's a photo my rep at USPCC sent me:

Yes I know Don, that's exactly why I choose my words carefully!  As I said, so far, everything has gone nicely, including getting on the print Queue as expected.

And that's also why I make sure everyone knoww I'll keep them updated. Stuff happens and if it does we'll keep an eye on it!
Over all I know how long some have waited for their decks, and that sometimes uspcc is blamed, but as I've discovered, some of the delays were actually just that, blamed on USPCC even though there were other reasons...

I worked with them years ago, they had the same reputation of being difficult etc, but they were awesome to me then as they have been lately!

Thanks again Don!

Well, all looks good on scheduled production, as expected we should ship these in April.
There are no issues and there won't be any changes, in fact all has been approved now for over a week.

Thanks for all the Kudos!

Thanks everyone for everything!
Very excited right now, what a huge success this was for me!

Between kickstarter and the prior commitments to my distributor and a few other larger distributors I came close to needing a third edition!

Thanks all!

big lesson learned, you can't please everyone!  I understand some like the box some don't, some like the uncuts some don't.  The main product is the deck. Period.  I would say if the design of the box is more important to you than the product itself, and you don't like the box, it's probably not for you.

I was happy to see that Russell cancelled his pledge on the uncut since he didn't like it (and pleased to see he repledged) but I couldn't change it based on one person's point of view.  the changes made have always been my best attempt to be of service to the overall product.  I actually got MANY more responses in favor of the Joker box but still felt the box had a purpose to serve.  I had many other designs that I was going to post and get thoughts but after seeing the drastically different opinions I realized it would just be opening up debates and not get anywhere. Again for everyone who liked one thing there has been someone else who didn't like it...

Thanks for everything everyone!

@CBJ: thanks for the post!

@magicaddictz:  Yeah, the colors looked great before but there were a few that were too "close" to each other and once I tweaked one, it created a domino effect!

I then decided if I was going to mess with them I might as well go through with a fine tooth comb!  The yellow to green is better, th purple to red, better over all, while fine before, just better now!

ummm, well thanks for the "kind words" Russell... :-)  I think.

Thanks!

I'm telling ya, Don Boyer takes the words right outta my mouth over and over... Yes the design is meant to imply that there's "more".
The original box had 52 little tiny cards on it and it just wasn't going to print right.  glad you like the box... I have gotten several emails saying they were mad that the joker's no longer on the box!  everyone has their own taste!  I'm happy with the box now!

Poster Number 2 is more, mostly because it cost me more to print it, I didn't have a good source and WAY over paid, I also was so anxious that I printed them, then I changed the name from SPECTRUM 52 to the SPECTRUM deck.  So whether or or not there's value in the name change thing will remain to be seen.  OKAY NO debates on that! :-)  Putting it on kickstarter really is more of an experiment, since this poster would not be reprinted due to the name change, I was wondering if there might be an interest, a little so far, we'll see how it goes!
.

Thanks

Regarding the 2500 decks... Originally this wasn't going to be a kickstarter project, as I've stated, I had committed to the production no matter what.  So I had a couple of dealers lined up already who wanted pretty high numbers.

In fact, I WAS planning on hanging on to at least a few dozen for myself, again not knowing how they'd sell.  Once I did the math I realized that I will end up with very little for myself!  In fact I'm hoping to renegotiate a few dozen to keep for me, but the commitments to the dealers have been made and of course I'll have to honor it!

yes they will, I plan on having them available for the magic dealers...

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Friars Club Playing Cards and Jerry Nuggets
« on: February 26, 2012, 05:39:33 PM »
I have always wanted to handle Jerry Nuggets but due to the high price I don't think I will ever be able to.

Keep your eye out for used Jerry's Nugget cards, I found a few decks at the Magic Castle Swap Meet, opened and used but in great shape and I think I paid 8 bucks for them, maybe 10.. I have MANY decks opened and used as I used to have hundreds of them.

So if you want to work with them the possibility is there.  In fact I saw several opened used decks, and they were all around that price.  (No they weren't the knock off's I know the differrence, having owned hundreds of them and having handled the knock offs)

Wow Cosmo! When I read that thing about the Jerry's I almost cried!
On aired serious note, I wouldn't consider that dumb, due to the fact that they had no value at the time, and how we're you supposed to know the crazy value of those cards in the future?

Well it felt pretty dumb!!!

Someone out there has THIS story for this thread...

so before I knew that the Jerry's Nugget's were of any value, I went to the Las Vegas Magic Invitational, where I had a dealer's table.  I brought a couple dozen of the Nuggets with me, planning and hoping to get 5 bucks a deck.  A young guy and his friend approach me and ask how much?  I mentioned 5 bucks..  And his friend shouts out... HOLY COW you got two dozen Jerry's Nuggets???? those are going for like 75 bucks on ebay!!! Needless to say his friend was crushed and I ended up selling two decks to him at $45 a piece.

Now THAT was dumb!

Thanks Nathan! And again thanks brown_baggs for everything!

Great points hazaofhorsham, not a collector myself, nor having the ability to see the future, I'm just doing things the best I can in a way that's no harm either way.  A second run will happen no matter what color the seal is, so why not change the color just for reference sake?  Should the deck not be collectible then the seals won't matter anyway, should they become collectible, the seals will have been a good idea.  No harm no foul either way.  I spent many hours in discussion and planning of this deck, not with magicians as you might think, since it's initial reason is for magic and that's my area of expertise, but with some heavy hitter collectors.  Hands down the advice to me was: limit the first run to 2500, which was all my budget could handle anyway, and in the event that the demand calls for more cards, identify the second run in some way, the seal being the most recommended.

I love the discussion but gold seal, black seal, pink seal, polka dotted seal, really doesn't hurt anything but does offer the identifier for those who might want it. I say if it means nothing to you tear it open and have some fun with them!   And by the way with all the respect for your experience in the world, I'm told quite the opposite about the collect-ability of the cards. Just like the box, the uncuts, and the gaffs, I get 6 of one, 1/2 a dozen of the other.  Of course theirs are just opinions as well... who knows?

to each his own!

Who'd have thought a crappy little plastic cracker jack toy that most people threw away could ever be worth thousands?  Personally, and in all honesty, I'm  just happy that I'll FINALLY have the deck in my hands to use!

-best!

Just saying, I think the gold and black seal is dumb... whats the point? Why not have more gold seal or more black seal?
the gold seal black seal thing doesn't hurt anyone, playing cards are not printed 1 deck at a time, they are printed in runs, which really is only important to the collector, if you're getting the deck to open and use then it doesn't really matter what seal is on it. it's like first edition printing of books.  so there's really nothing dumb or smart about it. if the seals don't matter to you than it has no bearing.  the good news is that those who would like the deck can still get it thanks to the second run.  A commitment has to be made as to how many decks are being printed,if more or wanted or needed any second run has to be ordered .  the collector likes to know whether or not they're getting the first or second run that's really all the seals are for, identification.

A BIG thank you to all of you who pledged the kickstarter SPECTRUM deck project!

Black-and-white or sepia tuck box: interesting idea but doesn't help sell the deck much.  The current box gives the buyer an idea of its contents more effectively.  IF you saw it sitting on the shelf at your local magic shop, you'd have a very clear idea of what kind of deck it was.  I like the black background on this box, actually - it reminds me of the Pink Floyd album cover for "Dark Side of the Moon".

The argument for a 56-card spectrum uncut sheet is a good one - but it doesn't trump the fact that this is a deck first (and a magic deck at that), an uncut sheet second.  If there's a few different cards needed, in particular one or two with a rainbow back, so be it.  He's not making the deck because he thought it would be cool for collectors to have a wicked-looking uncut sheet; he's making it because it's a commercial-grade version of a deck that he previously had to make by hand in order to perform some of his magic tricks.

While I fully recognize that a poster isn't the same as an uncut sheet, he has created two different posters that show off only cards in different shades of color, with no rainbow backs or unsightly gaff cards - it won't have the collector's value, but it will have the beauty that an uncut sheet with that layout would have.  And it's not as hard on the wallet to get, either!

Don, you are a gentleman and a scholar!!  I couldn't have put it more perfectly!

Please guys, read Don's post regarding this.  Please, it's simple... only purchase the uncut sheet if you like it!  The poster looks AWESOME!

BTW, the proof will be posted soon, then you can decide.  I have had much input on this, and more people like the rainbow/gaff SHOWING on the backs side of the uncut sheet than the front!  I can't go back and forth anymore and will have to make the decision based on what I feel is best.

when it's all said and done, there will be just a fraction of uncuts produced, no where NEAR the number of decks.  They are what they are...

Thanks again!!

Years ago, I picked up HUNDREDS of Jerry's nugget cards at a buck a deck.  As a full time worker, I went through 10-15 decks a week, doing torn and restored, signed card effects, card on ceiling etc... (you can see where this is going right?) a buck a deck was cheaper than bikes from sam's club!  Thankfully I was one of the odd one's who DIDN'T like using the Jerry's Nuggets cards.  So I probably only trashed a few dozen!  I also made and sold packet tricks with a top selling magic video of mine in the 90's.  I busted up hundreds of Jerry's Nuggets for that! OUCH!

Second stupid thing I did... as many of you know I am producing the new SPECTRUM deck, (a rider back rainbow deck of 54 different different colored backs)  One of my pet routines is a color changing deck routine and I end with a "rainbow" deck.  Before using multi-colored bikes, I took my little collection of cards, broke the seals of 52 different decks and created rainbow decks, I used up everything from Jerry's nugget cards to other now impossible to get decks.

I still have most of those 52 of those rainbow decks left but to make things worse many of them got some moisture and molded!

Lastly, I picked up many cases of Sam Boyd Casino decks, AMAZING CARDS THAT LASTED FOREVER AND HAD A PERFECT FEEL... (BEE finish)
Those cost me only .25 cents a deck and at the time they were selling them slightly used, but it was the only casinos that didn't mark, cut or punch them! I bought so many of them, that to help me out, an employee got me the decks by the case, UNOPENED, UNUSED!  Of course I went through those like water since they were only a quarter each and SOOOO awesome to work with!  Sadly I only have a few still sealed, and all the rest are stuck on ceilings around the country!
