The studio pieces like the framed uncut and the boxes take a little longer to ship out, but Pete has been working hard in the shop to complete all the handwork items that were backed.  Pagan is going to look awesome in that redwood frame!

LOL on the fishnets! I miss them too, but it was getting a bit further from the look of the deck when they were in there.  If it helps any, I think the Hotcakes court would have all the items you listed in their chambers  :t11:

@Jackson - Thanks for the compliment on "Pagan!"  Our series is all about exploring different themes, looks and mediums for the artwork in our decks, so for sure everyone will have their favorite – mine is "Bohemia!" But I have to say "Hotcakes" is a close second for me.  It was definitely time to let our hair down and just have fun.  Not that I didn't enjoy creating the artwork for "Pagan", it was just a totally different kind of process that was insanely demanding.

@CordedTires - we are HUGE Monty Python fans and this deck is soooooo that kind of humor.  Risqué, playful humor that walks the artistic line between high and low.  Glad to hear you will be picking one of our "Hotcakes" decks up!

USPC has covered artistic decks with tastefully-presented nudity before - there's no reason why they'd object.  (And if they do, there's always EPCC!)

This deck will be on Kickstarter next month!

EDIT: Tony, I took the liberty of exchanging your image for a higher-resolution version I received, courtesy of Linnea at Uusi!  Click on it, it's BIG.  Click again, it's HUGE!!

The message that was posted to UC from Linnea:

Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to give you a sneak "peep" at Hotcakes!  And by the thread here it looks like you guys already sniffed out the theme, which is basically a send-up on a "nudie" deck.   Aside from the obvious "inspiration" and without giving too much away this early, we can tell you the medium this time around was pen, ink and markers as we wanted the artwork to be loose & playful.  The look is a mix of 17th-century full-figure courts with Emilio Pucci-like patterns, Andy Warhol's Pop Art, neon colors and Charles Pry's "one-off" art decks.  As always, we kept as many of the playable aspects in the design, though this one is the most art-oriented deck of the series so far.  We just wanted to have a little fun and whimsy this time around and hope you do, too!  Look for the next Hotcakes reveal on our Facebook page in the weeks ahead :)

Thanks for switching that image Don!!!

A sneak peak that was released on UC.

"The look is a mix of 17th century full figure courts meets Emilio Pucci-like patterns, Andy Warhol's Pop Art, neon colors and Charles Pry's one off art decks."

With any designer, I love when they are able to go in a completely different direction than their previous project, Kudos!

Thanks for posting this Sparkz! But you got the name of the deck wrong, it's "Hotcakes" not Cupcakes... :)

Don, is there anyway you can answer (if you know) if the two decks are going to be sold match-set like Paul's Decos or is one unlimited and one limited?

The tuck is gorgeous. I hope they're able to replicate that look and feel.

They haven't made any mention to me regarding a limited color and an unlimited color.  I'm inclined to say no.

The only time they made a color limited was for Bohemia.  They promised at the start to make a run of only 2,500 decks but started running out only halfway through the project, so I suggested the idea of the second, unlimited color.  Since then, they haven't promised any restrictions on a particular color.  They're really only limited in the sense that they won't be printing these cards like Ellusionist prints Bicycle Masters or most of their other decks - E keeps printing more when the stock runs out and have probably gone through two or three large print runs so far.

Hey Don - Actually The black deck for Royal Optik was limited (to 5000). Starting with Bohemia, all of our deck designs have had one version limited and one unlimited ( of each respective design). The one exception being Blueblood and Blueblood Redux, which were both limited. So with Pagan, the dark back design run is going to be limited to 5000 and the light back will be unlimited. We will be offering both decks at the same price (only during the Kickstarter project).

Hey Everybody,

We thought we'd share some more sneak peak images with you of our upcoming 4th deck release "Pagan". The backs are completely hand painted by Linnea as is all the rest of the imagery. And yes, boderless backs... we have really been wanting to do them on one of our decks and feel they really work well on this deck in particular - hope they're well received! Also, we will be doing a pre-launch giveaway on Uusi's Facebook page next week, before the deck goes live on KS. Hope to see you there!

I have to be honest. Uusi's designs are so tasty. They are one of the few designers that every time I see their new stuff I think to my self, "Dang self! I wish I would have done that!"

Great work guys can't wait to back and promote this deck.

Jackson

Thanks for the compliment Jackson! It's awesome to have your support and feedback. Can't wait to see more images from your upcoming SH deck - and congrats on your partnership with USPCC!

Also wanted thank everyone here for all the support and compliments. We apologize for disappearing for awhile, we are just now coming up for a brief (very brief) breath of air after getting the bulk of the Royal Optik deck orders out and simultaneously running BB Redux. So its back off to shop for me to finish the case goods for RO, while Linnea will be jumping back on BB Redux and all that's involved in that project. Phew... It's totally worth it though when we have supporters of our designs like we have here at the Discourse.

Thanks again!

Playing Card Plethora / Uusi "Blueblood Redux" KS Launch Date.
« on: August 14, 2013, 02:50:36 PM »
Hey everybody,

Just thought we would let anyone who might be interested know that we will be launching our new "Blueblood Redux" playing card deck on KS this coming Monday, the 19th of August at 10:00am EST. It will be a second revised edition of the original Blueblood deck, which was our first playing card deck we produced (and apparently one of our hardest decks to procure). Some of the revisions Blueblood Redux will feature will be a new tuck box, new jack of spades and jack of hearts (with the old jack of hearts moving up to the kings position) a new queen of hearts, an Uusi signature diptych add card, and new animals for the ace of diamonds and the ace of hearts. There will also be a revision of the pip cards, using the same suite symbol design and layout that we used in Bohemia and Royal Optik. Also the entire deck will be blue, with the clubs and spades a dark blue and the hearts and diamonds being a light blue. Oh, a new card back as well! There will probably be a few other additions as well. Hope to see you over at KS on Monday!

Hi Linnea, i am extremely glad you were able to cure his arthritis :) It wasnt anything major and obviously would not be detrimental to the decks success, but the fact that you acknowledged and corrected the imperfection just goes to show how much you love the deck as a complete and perfect work of art. My respect for you guys has just shot up even higher. I am very eager for the release and wish you the best of luck!

Thanks, Froggo! We are lucky to have you as a backer – love your eye for detail!  We will be launching BB Redux on Monday, August 19th at noon and hope to see you there :D

oops, not sure what happened there...

Super excited! Don, any chance you could contact the creators about the hand placement on the sword of the Jack of hearts? Its not a big deal but it doesnt look right (im not talking about an issue concerning proportion etc as everythings obviously abstract, its judt that the actual fingers do not fit right).

Blue blood is one of, if not my all time favourite deck. I have my calendar booked for release! Keep us updated please!

Hi Froggo – just saw this thread. Awesome, detailed description of how the Jack would be holding that type of sword!! Loved reading yours and Don's back and forth on that. Yes, the old Jack of Hearts (who is now the King of Hearts because we thought he made a brilliant suicide king) no longer has severe arthritis on his sword hand.  That was a hurried sketch for our first Kickstarter and we didn't realize we could change artwork that we had posted. We thought it was fine then, but given the chance to recreate the deck, we were eager to repair that detail along with a few others.  We hope you enjoy the new, anatomically appropriate version that also has some new court characters and many other changes when Blueblood Redux launches!

I just read your post and yes, these decks pretty much are a "Labor of Love". For some reason we really do not catch fire with the KS playing card backers. I think it is partly that we are very different from the vast majority of decks being made – our tuck boxes in particular do not follow the traditional look or template – and partly that we are not offering more popular, unlimited over funding items like dice or poker chips...

Pop will be always more popular but... Uusi, please, stay Jazz.

Ha! love that line, but I'm probably a little more metal than jazz...

First off I want to thank Jackson for posting our deck in an update to his backers today. It was an incredibly generous gesture that we greatly appreciated and is an awesome role model for other project creators. I suspect you are building up some mighty good karma there, Jackson!  Plan on being overwhelmed by your upcoming project :o  (I don't know what the hell that emoticon means, but I am using it as a super-rabid fan face who is dying to see more of that limited black deck!!)

Paul, your contribution to these discussions and your support of our projects from the beginning means so much to us!

We also agree with everyone that the bigger topic here is staying true to your design beliefs and not trying to pander and exploit a market that is having a moment. The second you give in to the chase for dollars over content you lose whatever was worth having about your idea. Its a one and done model that I don't think any of us want to participate in. We are honored to be included in such great company, to learn and share with everyone here and are looking forward to seeing how the custom deck market and your work in particular, evolves over the next few years.  Super exciting!!

Deck designers - take note!  A second deck color, timed correctly, can really goose the bottom line.

Not taking anything away from the timing but this had more to do with the design and the project. Adding another deck before getting the overfunding is a calculated risk for any Kickstarter. One that I'm sure will payoff in this particular example.

The original stretch goal of 700% would have put Royal Optik at $63,000. We are not quite there yet. I hope everything works out in the end numbers wise for Uusi. This project deserves the support.

With the early release of the Red Deck, this project has that Labor of Love Tag written all over it.

Hi Legacy,

I just read your post and yes, these decks pretty much are a "Labor of Love". For some reason we really do not catch fire with the KS playing card backers. I think it is partly that we are very different from the vast majority of decks being made – our tuck boxes in particular do not follow the traditional look or template – and partly that we are not offering more popular, unlimited over funding items like dice or poker chips. It seems like Backers who seek our decks out, like yourself, are looking for something different and are extremely supportive and a pleasure to work with.  Success for us is creating something that matters and that feels complete, which is exactly why we brought out the red deck. Over funding is awesome at any level and obviously the more funding we get the more we can produce for this market. Though it would be sweet to see larger amounts of backers, it is wonderful to know the decks will be made. We can't wait to send them on to everyone!

Let me list a few things I really like about this deck.

1. Great Color selection.
So many deck designers don't realize the power of NOT picking a completely saturated color to design with. The easiest way to make any design seem unfinished or collegiate in execution is to slap some 255 red or blue on their. Great job guys.

2. Fresh Court Cards.
I don't own my own Bohemian deck, but can already feel Usi's style spanning both of the decks.

3. Extreme Readability and Functionality of the number cards.

4. Ignoring the corners of the tuck case.
I like the full wrap design.

The only crit that I would say, and it super small is that I would like to see the numbers hand drawn as well. I want to see slight imperfections in the edge quality just like is in the courts. It will even sell the fact that someone painted this.

Great work guys, can't wait to get my deck.

Hey Jackson,
Thanks for the call out on those design points - pretty much spot on. As for the numeric and lettered indices, our thinking is that ever since they have been in use on playing cards they have pretty much been typeset ( with maybe some rare exceptions) so to us that seems consistent, but we do and try to add some hand feel to them by filling their form with hand painted color fields.
Thanks again!
BTW - those uncuts you sent out in your update look awesome!

Hey P&L

Just received the latest update with the overfunding goals. I really hope you get 700% your looking for. With the 2 specific colors strictly being used for this project nothing would be more complementary then it's red counterpart.

Will there be updated rewards to help you get to your 700% goal? It looks like most of your high end rewards are gone or limited, making your goal more difficult to obtain.

That might not be an issue.  Uusi decks have become more popular with each successive release.  They did 400% on their last project, Bohemia.

BTW: Peter & Linnea - I don't know if you noticed, but we're having a tournament for "best deck of cards" chosen in a somewhat arbitrary manner by votes (OK, it's only a handful of people voting, but still...)  I started a contest when we were down to only thirty-two decks remaining - pick the winners of the remaining matches, whoever gets the most gets a prize.  (It's in the Deck Battles board.)

Of the eight contestants, four chose your Bohemia deck to be the champion and one more chose it to make it to the finals!

So, while that's hardly a good sample from which to make an analysis, I suspect this deck will have a great following!  :))

Thanks for that vote of confidence Don! Even though we are off to a great start, reaching 700% is really going to be a challenge. We are hoping our backers can really spread the word and we will be posting some new rewards in the upcoming week. It would be really great to see the red Royal Optik deck get printed!

Thanks for the heads up on the Deck Battle contest! That's awesome that Bohemia's in the running.

Hi Legacy,

Thanks for the support in hoping we reach the goal for printing a second color deck! Yeah, the design/color scheme we are working on for a second deck looks great with the black Royal Optik tuck box - and yes, it is a darkish red background with the same off white/cream pattern color as the black tuck, and of course the backs would match.

As far as adding more rewards, this is something we are working on. We have a couple designs for items that are a compliment to the deck stands and card cases, that I am currently developing in the shop/studio that should be up on our KS page soon. We would definitely do mixed bricks if we reach the second color goal (and of course there would be the red uncuts). Interestingly enough though, most of ones funding in KS card deck projects comes from 1, 2 and 3 deck pledges and also brick pledges. The extra incentive items ( T-shirts, prints, deck stands, card cases etc.) definitely add a nice boost in over funding goals though.

Linnea, you and Peter have done an astounding job here.  I knew you were going to get funded, but in FOUR HOURS?  That's practically a record!  Congratulations.

Hey Don,
Thanks! Yeah, we were a little floored to say the least at how fast we were funded. Here's to hoping the project keeps going strong!

Thanks again for your help on the project!
