Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Re: so this new D&D closeup pad...
« on: December 13, 2013, 10:55:53 PM »
A design thought - make it so you can simply drop in a traditional 12"x18" pad, then when it wears out or gets ruined, you replace it with an off-the-shelf model.  Even better, if you can get a good magician's kit bag with pockets, one of which would be large enough to hold your pad, that would be stellar.  Could be as simple as a nice messenger bag or a haversack (it's a shoulder bag that's sized between a map case and a large purse, usually oriented to be taller rather than wider).
I'm not quite sure what you mean with the bag stuff, sounds interesting and all, but if you could clarify... :P

Its a tv tray with felt on the inside.
With all respect, not even close. But yes, I'm sure I could go lower, I haven't checked the prices on wood and all that yet

EDIT: I almost forgot, what do you guys feel is a good size for a pad like that? I don't perform magic, so I wouldn't really know...

If I were to make the exact same product for a third of the price, would you guys buy it? ::)

He's using a deck with his own logo on it, there's nothing to suggest Ellusionist is involved with it... In case you guys STILL haven't noticed, most people do use decks from multiple companies even if they work for one.

You should see my desk right now, so loaded with gimmicks, samples, prototypes and decks it's not funny. We've been working so hard to get everything ready for Cyber Mon/Tues - all the sales and stuff. We were up until 4 am Sun night - no rest for the wicked!
The picture follows this paragraph. You're welcome.

Not bad. - I'm still controversial though.
That made zero sense. Try again in proper English.

Which Paul never implied in the first place. It's just that the handling side of it just can't really go wrong to begin with.

a deck is not going to be designed just to look great in fans.

EDIT: I'd like to mention that pretty much any deck that comes out of USPC's factory with good enough quality control handles very well. There isn't as much to be tweaked with today's options as far as handling is concerned as there used to be. Premium stocks? All discontinued/new standards as far as I know. Magic finish? It's slowly becoming the new standard finish, it's safe to assume that absolutely no handling-oriented deck would skip on it.

...where you just can't stand it anymore.
Usually, it is cause by a particular deck, often limited, that you can't possibly get yourself to pass on regardless of financial difficulties.
You may start by adding two, maybe three decks to your cart.
And spend a while changing the quantity up and down, unsure how much you're really willing to spend, but determined to keep it to a bare minimum.
Then, after a moment of indecision, you finally can't stand it anymore.
The resulting order can look a bit like this:

Sounds familiar? Tell us your story. :))

I'm curious if they are making the faces something new, like not even bothering to do pips but instead making it purely look good while flourishing.
Want.

Oh, new category - favorite deck you purchased this year.  It could have been made any year, but you have to have purchased it on or since January 1, 2012.  I'm betting that will generate some awesome responses!
I like the idea, we could make it an extra. I'll wait for John's word. ::)

They probably adopted the term from the furniture industry, where a finish would be a layer of some kind of clear or semi-clear varnish or wax in order to preserve the wood and its shine.  Playing cards with coating on them probably came around at a time when coated paper of any kind was practically unheard of it was such a new innovation.
I'm not sure about furniture, but as far as guitars are concerned, "finishing" also includes the dyes, paints, etc. used before the clear coat. Ink anyone? ::)

So, John - where's that list!?  :))

On John's behalf(because I've been helping with the whole thing), here's the current list:

New E decks probably have the same smell - they've moved completely to using Magic Finish under the name Performance Coating.  That was the name USPC made for it when they were first testing it with E - personally I think it sounds much classier.  I mean really, how suspicious would you be of a deck that said "Magic Finish" on the box?  :))
Not only is it classier(and much less cheesy), it's also a lot more accurate, considering that it is in fact a coating ::)
The word "finish" is far too misleading IMO.

I said common sense, not 6th grade math :/
Less factors involved in decision = less accurate results

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Deck Of The Year: Category ideas

Keep it simple. Guys it would be easier just to have three categories.

Category 1: Design
Category 2: Collectibility
Category 3: Handling

...Anyone with common sense knows that 6/9 is more accurate than 2/3.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Deck Of The Year: Category ideas

Most/least appropriate price
Most/least innovation
Best/worst use of design standards

Handling is 90% placebo effect and brings an extreme bias into the whole thing
Series and kickstarter categories are unfair because some decks are elligible while others are not
Coolest uncut... Highly irrelevant if you ask me

What is this, an interview? ::) There's no such thing as "the best", anyway.

-sigh-

What is it exactly that you guys don't like? There's so many comments about being disappointed, but so little explanation. Does every deck that's release have to have metallic, full-custom court cards and a crapload of gimmick features?

It's really annoying to see that so many people say they're "disappointed" yet fail to see even the simplest details in a deck. You guys have been so stuffed with the big things that you don't see the subtlety anymore.

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but at least try to have an educated one.

You don't want to know. ::)

Am I the only one who noticed the non-standard indices? Seems to be the same typeface, but without the serif.
