The Conversation Parlor / Re: Other hobbies
« on: September 12, 2014, 11:02:40 AM »
It's so cool to see people do sports..especially those a tad more extreme.

I use to do a lot of sports until i got 2 slipped discs, which made me stopped for a very long time. Of course i can still do sports now that i'm much better than before, but not at the pace that i used to do.

I got a more serious problem though. I actually had this problem since young but it's worst since i started earning my own money to spend. I have a collecting addiction. I have a card collection (Duh), DVD collection, manga collection, caps collection, bottle collection.......basically anything that can catch my interest i will collect. I buy tons of DVDs even though i have watched it or i could always watch it online. I have a whole collection of hard liquor and wine, and i'm actually on Amazon now window shopping for board games and chess sets.

Now, I'm actually into collecting vintage stuff. I have old F&N glasses, bottles and bottle openers. Japanese WWII currency notes. Ammo box. Suitcases. Telephones....list goes on.

My wife keeps asking me when i wanna open my "museum".  :-[

YES a man after my own heart.
I like to think I only have one collection though:
A Collection of Collections

I have 3 types of collections
Active collections - items that I am actively seeking (the largest category)
Dormant collections - collections that I still have and display but am not currently growing
Extinct collections - Collections that I once sought but have now lost my interest, these exist somewhere in boxes.

An incomplete list of my collections
Active
- playing cards
- Mugs
- Hats
- Records
- Strategy Board games
- dice
- Hess Trucks
- classic science fiction toys and items
- Godzilla/ classic shonin kaiju toys
- Gas Masks
- Books
- signed comic art and celebrity signatures
- Comic / anime statues (believe it or not this is really my wife's collection)

Dormant
- Kachinas (Hopi Indian ancestral spirit statues )
- Swords
- knives
- Teddy Bears (really my wife's collection but I was the one who added to it)
- Ties ( still wear them when I have to but don't really seek them out anymore)
- Political buttons (this becomes active every 4 years)
- McCoy Smiley face pottery
- Shot glasses (really anybody who has been to college I am sure)
- Goshuin (temple stamps) This will become active again if I ever return to Japan.
- CDs

Extinct Collections
- Comic Books
- Key chains
- PEZ dispensers
- Hello Kitty (same as Teddy Bears )
- Halloween costumes (the old kids boxed kind)
- TV show board games
- Rocks
- Shells
- insects  (these last 3 probably because I was a boy scout)

I am sure that there are others I have missed and I apologize to any collection I have forgot

On top of that I just tend to pick up random interesting and usually worthless items  (but I have nothing when compared to my father's interesting, unusual, worthless crap)

so yeah one might say I collect stuff. It is definitely an addiction... or more accurately an affliction. I am sure everyone knows the term for it , Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. OCD, or as I like to say CDO because the letters are in order like they are supposed to be.

It's a souvenir deck for the Moon as opposed to Cleveland or New York...

Last time I was there I forgot to pick one up at the gift shop.
And when am I really going to get back to the moon. I mean it is nice to visit once, you know, to say you were there, but there are so many better places to visit and there just isn't that much to do.
Jump around in low gravity, take your picture with the lander and the US flag, how many pictures of gray dirt do you really need?
And don't get me started on craters. My wife was like "oooh look how big this one is."
There is only so many times I can say "That's what she said." until even I get bored.
And the dark side of the moon... Don't you believe it, matter of fact it's all dark.
You know it just isn't as easy to get the time off I use to...

But now look
I don't have to return to the moon to get a Moon Souvenir deck. I just have to tune into the inter webs and find myself some kickstarter.

Oh Frabjous day

Don is right.
We have much more sophisticated ways of belittling the opinions, of people we disagree with, here.

This is like the twelve gazillionth 8Bit deck on kickstarter. I think the number runs just under steampunk and cthulhu and just above zombies.
Yet they take a lot less effort... (ok to be fair I have seen some steam punk and zombie decks that have taken no effort)

I have to say this is not even the best of them.
Something seemed off with the cards
At first I thought it was the dull color scheme . But then when Shebhnt (that is a fun screen name to say out loud) mentioned the 3D affect, I knew he hit in something.
It is off putting since the images should be 2D the third dimension is just a thick line (not to be confused with the 5th Dimension , which was a Motown, R&B group)

I don't get  "flexible funding" for a retail product. In my mind the only reason to go this route would be to  scam people. Secure the funding and it will bring more backers which means more money.

My sentiments exactly.  It just makes the whole thing seem a little sketchy.  If you don't hit your goal, you can't deliver on your tiers - otherwise, your budget was bogus to start with.  But if they don't hit the goal, they get to keep the cash?  For what?  Honorable Mention?  3rd Place?  It's a reward to the creator for failing!  I could say I need a zillion dollars to make my playing card project, so anyone foolish enough to back me is in essence putting cash straight into my wallet.  Why even have a deadline, right?  If you get the money either way, goal or no goal, they could simply pay it to you as you go, right?  Start up enough big-ticket projects that will never succeed, you could support a small family on income like that!

It's dumb, period.  Anyone backing such a project, they're even dumber - but that's my opinion...

This is brilliant.
I am just going to start cutting and pasting failed kickstarter deck projects and putting them on IGG at too high of a goal.
This way if any of them get fund, I will just make the deck and pay the original creator for it. and since most of them won't I will just live off of the decks that don't reach their goal. Hell I could even repost projects that fail with slighly lower goals saying "This is the second campaign, and we only need a little bit more to make this deck a reality" I am sure I could get some of the suckers that pledged the first time to pledge again.

This is great
Good bye door-to-door mop head salesman, Hello Easy Street.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Mystery Box/Bad Robot Deck from T11
« on: March 19, 2014, 12:21:23 AM »
people keep hinting that there is more in the box besides the cards and the letter from JJ, I highly doubt it, someone would have leaked it by now

Info on the Mystery Box

Those of us who bought the box were asked to keep this quiet by J.J Abrahms himself (or I am assuming he did, since I didn't actually bother reading the letter)
and having not opened my mystery box
I can definitively say
"There definitely MIGHT be something inside the box other than cards"

Remember you heard it here first

Speaking as someone who was trying to sell uncut sheets on Ebay recently I can answer your question as such.

Not Much

I have seen the IAOCP sheet go for as low as $25 and has high as $50 (with deck) recently

No one wanted to pay $45 for mine

Best Faces: This was a tough one ... but I am going with Sultana
Best Jokers: Royal Optik
Best Box: Whispering Imps (Red)
Best Ace of Spades: Federal 52 Reserve note / Venexiana close second
Best Designer: Uusi
Best Deck of the Year: Federal 52 Reserve note
(Honorable Mention) Best Designer whose first deck release was in 2013:Since I don't know of any other designer that released their first deck this year, and his decks were phenomenal - Jackson Robinson

Also I think we need to add one more category
Best original pips
Enough custom decks are doing custom pips now that I think it should be added.

Never package items for retail sale in Japan or to Japanese people in sets of four, such as a sake service set or kitchen tableware.  The word "shi" means both "four" and "death" in Japanese, though with different kanji, making it an unlucky number - even when going out socially, the Japanese will try to avoid groups of four, favoring a higher or lower number of people.  In fact, many older Japanese buildings are missing a 4th floor in much the same way as many older, taller American buildings are often missing a 13th floor.

This is also true about the number 9. Which is "Ku" which also means pain, suffering, or torture.
There are a lot of Japanese Buddhist rituals around the number 9 to ward off suffering.

The Conversation Parlor / Re: What was the best Xmas present you GAVE?
« on: January 20, 2014, 10:56:26 PM »
This year the best gift that we gave was to one of our friends who is a huge fan of Frank Herbert's "Dune"
My wife knitted a 3 ft long mini maker (baby sand worm) for him.

The best gift I ever gave was to my mother.
My mother is a Nurse. She went to nursing school at Hahnemann in Philadelphia. Back in the day seniors in nursing school would be given a cape. You may have seen old pictures of young nurses wearing capes, these were student nurses doing their intern.
Anyway
This tradition eventually faded out in most school. The senior class right before my mothers was the last class to receive these capes. Needless to say my mother was rather disappointed and never forgot it.
So one year I spent the better part of six months hunting down a nursing cape. Some how I even managed to find one from Hahnemann. I gave it to her that Christmas. Needless to say there were a lot of happy tears that year.

Anyway
There you have it.

How can you put these two decks together in battle.
It is like pitting brother against brother. This is a card civil war not battle.

These cards are a set
Making  us choose is like making us decide which ventricle of the heart we like best.

I refuse to take part in your shenanigans sir

I said "Good Day"

I am on the fence on this deck. Not a huge fan of the tuck, the backs seem a bit busy also.
I like the court cards but the barbed wire is a tad overdone.

I hope the second deck will be a stretch goal because as said above it will be a tall task to get two decks funded.

"On the Fence"... "barbed wire" fence...

You crack me up

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Legacy Deck - 4PM Designs
« on: January 07, 2014, 03:24:05 PM »
I completely understand what 4PM is doing here and I feel that most of the arguments and statements are quite valid.

The only thing for me is that this shows one of the huge flaws in kickstarter. There is very little investment in it for the creators. Now I am not saying this is true for everyone as some companies (not typically on the playing card side) have already spent a budget on design and prototypes. But usually for the playing card market all that is at risk for the creator is the time they spent designing, which I am sure is considered valuable to them, However should not have a monetary value unless they are doing the design of the deck as their job. (i.e. as their source of income and not in their spare time, as many designers do). In fact for many decks it is coming down to the creator only coming up with a concept and only putting the minimal amount of work into it before the campaign and then working on it while the campaign is active and much more so once the campaign is funded.
In my eyes there should be more risk for the creator. As it is now the major risk goes to the buyer and for the most part none to the creator.  this is why the number of fraud and failed successes is so high. Because creators don't risk, so if they see a chance that they will have to spend their own money at some point, they see this as taking a loss and not like investing in their project. As Lukeout said (or maybe only implied) it is the inventory after the completion of the kickstarter orders that should help on the profit.

Now I know someone will try to bring up the creator and investor example. And say the person who pledges is an investor and therefore takes that large risk on themselves as in a business scenario. With investors a creator gets rid of a portion of their risk (notice I didn't say all). However this scenario does not work for kickstarter. The people who pledge are not truthfully investors. We are pre-sales to help a project get finished. If we were investors we would expect to see some of the profits from the excess stock that is sold (like maybe a penny or two on each of the $50 decks Jackson sells).

Creators obviously can do what they like. And 4PM backing out of this project now in hopes they can run a more successful campaign next time is certainly a legitimate strategy. Many creators have done it and come up with many more pledges the next time and I hope that is what happens here as I do like these decks. But in the end the reason this happened is because they don't want to invest too much in their own project while still creating the best deck that they can that will be the most attractive on resales.

One Saturday some years ago we decided to take a trip to the Philadelphia Art Museum.
The "artist" featured in their main exhibit was Barnett Newman.

We were laughing so hard, we were asked to leave the museum

to think of the money that people actually pay for that (descriptor left out to not offend people who like his "work"), I should have been crying.
