Design & Development / Re: Kings Wild - Signature Series
« on: December 12, 2013, 12:09:12 PM »
Had to take a quick break from Sherlock Holmes last night and did some concepting for a possible Kings Wild Signature Series back design. This one is much in line with my Federal style.

The blue line work would be a metallic blue and the back ground lines would be metallic silver.

Hope you enjoy.

I love this one Jackson. I know you're trying to effectively use negative space, however i feel like something is missing in the centre. Perhaps design a Kings wild 'Signature Series' logo in silver metallic ink and slam it right in the middle?

Beautiful.

18$ is a good deal. Touchofmodern is 100% legit. Keep in mind they also charge shipping costs, and only ship within US/Canada.

I give them credit for being the top dogs of create the most beautiful tucks out there hands down, but not for their courts. I know they are capable of so much more than that. I support subtle changes, but those subtle changes have to be composed with the whole and not fragmented as they are. Standard courts would have not handicapped the awesome tuck. I only give them a rough time as they are one of the people I look to for standards of quality.

Capability doesn't always equate to execution. Sure, there can be changes made that would be for the better. But when time, effort, and opportunity cost comes in to play, T11 may simply not feel the necessity of spending an exponential increase in time and effort to only marginally improve a deck. After all, they're in it for the business. Their time could instead be focused on other products/future releases that will generate greater profit for them in the long run.

A great example of this are Apple products. Apple is notorious for not implementing their whole array of innovations into a single product. They instead choose to implement their arsenal of futuristic technology in numerous iterations. Many people bash on them for not making the current generation of products the best it can be; but they don't understand that it has everything to do with opportunity cost and maintaining long term market power. T11 may have spent an extra 5-10hours of work to 'perfect' the court cards. However the final result may only trigger a slightly more positive response from the niche community such as us. Their sales may have increased by 1%, or 100%, the uncertainty is the beauty of the market mechanism. In this case, it's not because T11 didnt have the potential to do better, it's because they didnt feel the need to spend the extra time and effort to improve what is already very good (Come on guys, the deck as a whole is gorgeous!) to something marginally better.

I personally disagree with the preference of standard/recoloured courts. T11 has a whole array of such examples. They got bashed consistently because of this. Custom courts is one of the deciding factors in the war between T11 and Ellusionist (fuck HOPC/D$D). They decided to make a change that would potentially take away Ellusionist's edge in this category. Much improvement is needed in future releases to achieve the level of JAQK/Seasons courts, but i think T11 did a good job (and a correct move) in the whole. Us hippies/enthusiasts/perfectionists aside, just imagine all the shit T11 would get if they had released 'yet another gorgeous tuck box but crappy recoloured courts' deck.

T11 played their cards right.

/end rant.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Bicycle Elements (4 deck set) - Coming soon
« on: December 02, 2013, 10:39:39 PM »
I like it... But I don't like this whole trend of creators releasing multiple decks at once through kickstarter; it's bad enough when things like Federal 52 or Sherlock come out - but at least with them, you get something different with each deck and so it's potentially worth it, with these it's either pledge for all at around $40 plus $20 shipping or its not pledge at all. Who wants one or two colours of a 4 colour set? And you know the aftermarket is just going to be filled with 4 deck sets anyway!

I completely disagree. Especially to "Who wants one or two colours of a 4 colour set?". If you like a single particular deck, buy it. If you like all 4, buy 4. No one is forcing anyone to purchase the whole set. We as collectors (and humans in general) have a tendency to want everything in a set and everything that's 'limited'; so we can feel complete and exclusive. Understand that, know what you like and don't like, be decisive and purchase what you genuinely desire. Don't be a sucker in the infinite market of goods and buy everything that's thrown at you.

I loved the propaganda deck so much! First theory11 deck I ever received ~ back then it cost me £5 from magicbox :) I'll probably get these just because of that!

Propaganda is a very nice deck. This deck on the other hand, though borrowing (way too many) elements from Propaganda, is nothing like the original in terms of aesthetics. I don't think it does the original any justice at all. With that being said, this is not a bad looking deck at all. It's not in the same ball park with the top dogs running the show but it surely isnt terrible. I merely dislike, and even despise, the lack of creativity demonstrated by literally getting the Propaganda back design, taking the exact same elements and changing them slightly (especially when it does the original no justice and is in fact mediocre in comparison).

My 2c.

This is true with most decks that try to do the "custom face only" approach. Legends is another good example, or some of Madison's stuff. You can't change one piece of a composition that has burned its self into our brains for 100 years and not expect it to look off.

It think it worked well with Legends, Madison (Rounders/Dealers) and Split Spades. Sure, it took some getting used to but they look good. These court faces are disproportionate. Even worse, they are "inconsistently" disproportionate. Some face's are normal size and some are small size.

The Madison courts are definitely one of the best 'custom-standard' courts out there. That's for damn sure.

I picked up 1 Medallion deck, mostly because of T11's gorgeous tucks as usual, especially with the new french 'luxe' paper texture like the Red Monarchs. For the people that dislike the courts on these; would you rather have had standard/recoloured courts? Give credit to T11 where credit is deserved. I think they are subtle and gorgeous. Definitely on the upward slope. Hopefully T11 will use these as a base and only improve with time.

10
Think it's safe to say that this is potentially D$D's worst release yet. Don't think anything else tops it in terms of premium pricing, crappy design etc. Yes, even worse than the repeating courts in the October deck.

Those were sold out in 21 minutes - the only thing wrong with that deal was that it went so quickly.

Fixed. :)

Well, since I'm from Charleston - and live here now, I decided I'd give them a call and find out.  The answer is exactly as everyone has posted already: they are an 'incentive', not for sale.  To get a deck, you have to spend $100 in one visit, it's not a cumulative thing with a tally card or something.  Simple enough - take the wife and a couple of friends and $25 each wouldn't even be a challenge, although the prices are very reasonable.  The reason I never connected the deck with the restaurant here is that they changed the name a few years ago (apparently 6 or 7 now, from what I read) and bought what used to be "Big John's" downtown.  Right on the upper King Street "tourist trap" area near the visitors center, not even a challenge.  I've got one, but I'll soon have another, and if they are worth a darn, I'll pick up a few over the next couple of months, maybe drop a couple on the board here when I get my post count up.
If you're picking up a few over a few months then I'll be keeping an eye on your posts, as long as they aren't extortionately priced I'm in the market for a deck :)

Same! :)

I adore the courts. The back; not so much.

I don't see how this marketing strategy is 'bullshit'. It's totally valid. T11 already somewhat figured out their estimated equilibrium market demand/supply/price from the last JAQK decks. It would be silly to do a 2,500 run and sell out within 2hours when you as a company almost know for a fact that a 10,000 run will sell out in 72hours. Bottlenecking huge demand is almost never beneficial.

Overall design is quite nice. However the intricacy of the back design may not translate well in actual print..

Good comments Fred. By the way did you pledge for the deck?

With the $300 you saved from Dale's project you should back 4 decks! haha

It may just be my PC, but it's live now, but I can't select a quantity of more than 1. I can select 1 deck, add it to my cart, adn then change the quantity in the cart at checkout and it works though. Like I said, that just may be a quirk with my PC.

Yep you're right, the link works :) Although to be on the safe side, if anyone is interested in buying i'd suggest them to buy after the official release time to avoid any complications. They are unlimited after all.

Personally, Monarchs are among one of my favourite decks and i'll definitely be picking up two of these (though not from T11). According to the T11 link, it seems that these will incorporate a new matte finish textured tuck box that is the " highest quality paper ever used on a deck of cards". Will definitely be interested in seeing how this claim holds up, as the Monarchs tuck box already has a very nice premium feel, and T11's Madison Players' tuck box texture will be hard to beat.

EDIT: Oh they are actually officially released! Got my timezone conversions wrong again as usual.. =p

Here's the link to the 4deck pack special release: http://store.theory11.com/products/monarch-four-pack

BiggerDee, I appreciate the response but again, you're manipulating my words. Basically, it comes down to this.

1- I never said you were bashing anyone.

2- Look, how many times do i have to say that i am not angry about the 60$ price tag? You mention JN and Rarebits with their inflated prices. What does that have to do? I'm am not arguing about rarity or anything that like. That was never my point! My point was simply addressed to the hypocritical comments hating on bigger companies and then praising Paul's decisions which are the same (Again, i am not talking about physical similarities either).

3- Please don't make wild assumptions that i think Paul is an "outright thief". I have never said that. You're basically shoving words in my mouth. I don't want anything to do with you shoving things in any part of me. Please stop doing that. His business model is completely legitimate and i have no problem with it.

4- I never discredited Paul's honesty.

5- I have never mocked anyone in buying Paul's product. Again, my point is directed at the hypocrites who pick and choose.

6- I clarified that i wasnt shouting when using Caps Lock. What's wrong with that? Does using Caps lock automatically make me a shouting, disrespectful 'Phegget'?

7- How is my discussion any less honest and 'intelligent' as yours? I simply have a different point of view. If you can't grasp that, and think age has any play in that determination, then, well, i don't think i'm the one that "has a lot to learn".

8- I never made the connection between second run Aurum/Tendrils and these Deco v1s?

Mate, you're completely misunderstanding what my point is. I don't know how much clearer i can make it for you to be honest. I know a few other languages and i can- spaek liek dis, if that will help you understand. For the sake of saving time, can we please all be friends, with different opinions, and get back on topic? The argument is clearly being abusive now and i don't want to rustle your jimmies anymore.

Wow. You guys really know how to manipulate my words. First off, i mean no disrespect. Excuse my choice of words. That's how i like to articulate and if it offends you, i can't do much about that.

Instead of writing a huge essay to convey my points, i'll keep it simple.

1- I am not butthurt about not being able to purchase the 'v1's'. Don't make it seem like i am just an angry little 13 year old that wants a 'special' edition and don't have the money to get it. Excuse the vulgar expression, but, i simply do not give a single fuck about the v1s.

2- I KNOW THAT THIS IS PURELY BUSINESS. I NEVER SAID THAT IT WAS ILLEGAL OR ANYTHING. I am not shouting, it just seems that you guys don't seem to understand anything other than what you have already locked in your brains.

3- If you justify the price tag, and are willing and able to purchase this sub-par premium product for yourself, then that's TOTALLY fine. I am not bashing on you. Again, what makes you happy in the end is ALL THAT MATTERS. I myself love Deco and Paul's other decks (especially Aurum). Once again, i am not a hater.

4- The ONLY point i was trying to get across is that, if you're complaining about the other companies creating slightly different versions and then reselling them for profit, and i mean literally crying about it, then you are absolutely hypocritical in endorsing such practice conducted by Paul. It is the exact same concept.

Don, you're a great guy and you have a worldfull of incredible information. I appreciate that a lot, especially when you take the time to inform us. However, your argument is entirely off the point. You're comparing the physical similarities between a change in tuck box vs a change in colour.. whereas my point is that they are the same in terms of money grab business model. Stop arguing about a point that i never even raised. It makes me look bad in other people's eyes even though you're not even raising a valid counter argument.

Come on guys, i hope that even if you don't agree with me, you at least see that i'm raising some valid points and not just some random guy with no hope, blindlessly hating (Yes this is directed to you Gunshy). Stop riding on Paul's dick and try to see the similarities from an objective point of view.

I have wasted way too much of my time arguing for something i find so straight forward. So, this will be the end of discussion at least from my end. How about we get on topic and post pictures, reviews, comments etc about the actual beautiful deck that is Deco?

Difference is the unintentional prit run? Wow really. What a joke. The mistake from USPCC caused a later delivery. Paul decides to make some extra profit in selling off v1s. Totally justified, and successful as people bought them. Im not saying that he couldnt. At least with colour changes, you get a different coloured back and tuck box.. And is usually charged at normal prices/ used in promotions. Of course in the end it boils down to whether or not you want to buy it, but both are money grabs. Do not pick and choose. Dont bash on the bigger companies and praise the little guy when they are doing the same shit.
