Playing Card Plethora / Re: So let's say I restarted my channel...

@Jin Jian

Thats the channel/videos I've meant. He doesn't make any reviews anymore as far as I know (stopped doing flourishing aswell if I remember correctly).

To be honest I never really got the sense behind a Channel entirely devoted to playing card reviews. To be fair I don't own alot of different decks, but I handle cards for quite a while and I never noticed a HUGE difference in the quality of those cards. There are certainly card that are better for fanning than others, but I don't really have faith in someone telling me "those are great for fanning" and then performing a shitty thumb fan (Im not meaning you with this comment, but those random kids on youtube I see doing reviews).

A while ago trashmanf made a couple deck reviews that were almost entirely focused on handling and comparing different stocks. This guy actually knew what he was talking about because he was great at flourishing/cardistry himself and therefor knew what other card guys are looking for in a deck of cards. He also had a great sense of humor which made his videos really fun to watch.

@Alex: Unfortunately I never knew about your channel, but if you're a funny guy and you know what you're talking about when it comes to different stocks and handling cards, I would love to subscribe and watch your videos in the future. Interviews would be interesting aswell.

Joey

Sorry for overreacting at the time
No worries, I said quite some stupid things :)

So I'm curious, where do you find the time to keep up with design + programs, as well as cardistry, while majoring in such a difficult field?
I dont actually.
I hardly do any of these during the semester, after Im done with my exams I start getting my flourishes and edits "back into shape".
Thats why Im doing alot of videos right now, because I have some time until the next semester starts in october.

Currently majoring in Biology here, the Chem classes are the worst. Specifically, the labs.
:D thats the best part, staying till night in the lab to find out why things not work the way they should.

I know I heard of you somewhere but I can't place my finger on where.
at unitedcardists.com, if I remember correctly I flamed/trolled you a bit over there... no hard feelings though =/

So Joey, what's you're favorite part about working on a video?  The shooting, the editing, the part where it's all done and you can take a deep breath and relax?  Want to let the forum in on a few of your secrets for good videography and editing?

I like every part actually. Starting from scratch only having a couple scenes in your mind that you want to make real. Spending hours to find the right camera angle and positioning of lights. Playing a soundtrack over and over again to find the right beat to place your cut.  The best part though is if your video is done and you think its great, you take another look at it 2 days later and you think its the worst thing ever and you start to work on your next video.

Its just practise. Design is the art of making your work look less shitty over time. For years my videos and cinematography looked ugly as hell (and most of them still do now).
Watching (good) movies is pretty good practise aswell.

Design & Development / Re: Basic questions for a Cardistry video.

#1: How do you guys feel about slower, smoother Cardistry videos that almost have a story as opposed to fast and disjointed videos of cards whizz ing around?
It depends. Both styles can look great if done correctly. But I would say going for a more cinematic cardistry video is more difficult to pull off than editing to an electro beat and adding some flashes at the right beats.

#2: How much editing is "To much"?
Same answer I guess. A video that for most people looks "overedited" can still be a fantastic video for other people.
Just make sure that every effect you put in your video has a "reason". Dont put effects in your video just for the sake of having a funky effect in it. Add effects in your video because they go along with the music or because they add to the beauty of one of your cuts.

hope that helps

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Re: C.O.F.F.E.E. Tutorial - JFX
« on: August 12, 2012, 04:11:54 AM »
Well shooting with 60fps instead of 30 would be better for making slowmotions, however I would have to cut down the resolution (shooting with 60fps means 720p instead of 1080p as it is now). Having the resolution to be 720p unfortunately makes the cards look less detailed, due to the Moiré-Effect (quite a problem for DSLRs). Thats why I rather shot the footage with 30fps.

The name C.O.F.F.E.E comes from the scripting language "Coffee" that is part of the 3d programm Cinema 4d, which is the programm I use for my 3d work.

Glad you liked the tutorial.
