Playing Card Plethora / Re: Scarlett Tally-Ho No.13 by KWP (coming soon)

Did he realize he made a misspelling in that title?  Or was it intentional?

"Scarlett" is a popular name for girls, while "scarlet" is a deep, rich red color.

Frankly, I'm just glad that someone's making custom Tally Ho decks!  It's far less common than Bicycle, hands down.

On his facebook page he says the deck is in honor of his youngest daughter, Scarlett.

My creepy meter is different than most folks.  I am often showing art to friends where they look at me funny and tell me that it is dark or creepy.  I can see the creepy factor.  Perhaps I think creepy is beautiful.  It is starting to seem that way  ;D

Apologies, I can not figure out how to get the images posted.  This is a very interesting and beautiful deck.

If it is done in the correct style, I hope the price point isn't  $15.00 per deck.

I am a little conflicted as I purchased a brick of the Egyptians for $89.00 dollars and would have preferred to purchase 12 Blue ones for $60.00 instead.  This is a difficult hobby to navigate the correct timing.     :(     This is a very generous sale and I am thankful for the heads up.  Now for the difficult part, deciding which brick to pick!     ;D

So where are the supposed marks everyone all up in arms about?  I'm not seeing any differences from card to card and I can't exactly do a riffle test with a photo.

Take a look at Anubis.

Looking for last minute opinions (and why)!

This is something that I absolutely love about the set but it is something that I feel people might have strong feelings about. The Seasons set is about emphasizing the change in design that this deck goes through over time, from the colors to the designs. I decided that it would make most sense if the winter deck expressed true duality with the summer set by being the only deck in the series with a reverse pip orientation.

Full Resolution Image: http://s4f73d8f8a28ce.img.gostorego.com/809E82/cdn/media/s4/f7/3d/8f/8a/28/ce/court_card_comparisons.jpg

I just wanted to see if this is something that would really turn you on/off. It makes so much sense to me to have the pips this way but if this is too much change I can always bring it back. Trying to gauge people's thoughts on this. Thanks again!

I am not a huge fan of the indicies being reversed.  I understand the design element, and after a while I think it would begin to make sense and not bother me.  I can see if I were using these cards to play poker it may throw me off a bit.  I use the cards for flourishing and Magic, so the indicies being in the standard position matters for Magic but not for flourishing.  So this deck may end up being used for one purpose over the other due to it's design.  The water mark however, in my opinion is starting to be one of those things that is a fad.  Hey everyone's doing it, why don't I?  This comes down to how it is used.  Is it part of the design? Does it add to the face of the card, or does it seem like an after thought?  Look to Heretic and Aquila as examples.  I feel that the back ground water marks were used in a way that flows with each of these decks.  In the case of Heretic it is adding to the story flavor and is incorporated in a very eye pleasing manner.  In Aquila, it flows to the pip cards from the courts in an inclusive way, and enhances the design as opposed to distracting me.  These of course are personal opinions and aesthetics.  Two more examples: Encarded's Zenith and Jackson Robinson's Hound of Baskervilles.  They both have a circular water marks throughout the pip cards, and in the case of Zenith in the courts as well.  At first, in the Hounds deck it made me a little nuts as the pattern is an H and a B interwoven, so of course this becomes a one way design.  After I started working with the cards, I noticed that lay folks could not tell when the card was reversed whereas I could spot it.  So it ended up being a great tool that grew on me as I used the cards.  In the Zenith deck it is so much a part of the design and is so deliberate that I never questioned it.  As of this draft of your design the water mark doesn't seem to flow with the cards.  It is distracting me.  These decks have such a flow in the design that I think you could find a way to make the water mark seem more a part of the cards and flow with the design, or you could just do away with it and have these match the clean style of the originals.  As a fan of playing cards and a fan of design, I find that if the creator really sticks to their vision the cards are the works of art that I expected all along.

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Re: Wizard Wars
« on: August 22, 2014, 05:41:30 AM »
Ekaterina and Chris were funny, their chemistry was good. Their card trick was really impressive, hope it gets released. If it is, maybe someone can drop a link?
Justin Flom and Greg Wilson are two of my favourite magicians. Magic isn't just about the trick, it's about performance. Greg and Justin had a story to tell, it was engaging and was easy to follow.
Ekaterina and Chris' war with the wizards, was good, but not great. They couldn't justify some of the stuff they were doing, for example the glasses coming out of the board. It was magical, yes, but you couldn't really see it.

All in all, I loved the show and I look forward to the second episode.

After searching a bit online into Greg Wilson, I feel he was not portrayed well on Wizard Wars.  They made it seem like all he did was pick pockets.  Being somewhat new to Magic, I had not heard of him and did not get a good impression from the show.  I understand that Magic isn't just about the trick, but about the performance.  I think Magic is a lot like Comedy in that each person will walk away with a very different experience.  Thanks everyone for discussing.  I am looking forward to the next episode as well.

Did anyone catch Wizard Wars on SyFy last night?  I felt like Ekaterina Dobrokhotova and Chris Funk were robbed!  I don't understand picking pockets being equated to Magic.  The Wizards, Gregory Wilson and Justin Flom basically showed us some pick pocketing and misdirection. I do not know either of them, they may be very good Magicians but I wasn't impressed by their showing on Wizard Wars.  It was way cooler to see Ekaterina Dobrokhotova  produce the sunglasses through the board and for Chris Funk to produce a foil from an audience member's purse.  WAY more Magical. Perhaps I am not the target audience.  I have never been impressed by pick pocketing or the card cheating type of Magic.  Yes, it takes skill, however the end game is to rob someone.  I want to be fooled by Magic and have some unsolved mystery to ponder.  Any thoughts?

It was changed.  I suspected it would be fixed when they caught it.  I bought a set at the 13.95  and they honored it.  That is why I said: Go quickly!

I have backed every Paul Roman Martinez Kickstarter and he is top notch.  I received my decks, but didn't go for a sketch tier.  Those look awesome.  The sketches on the box are super cool too!  Welcome to the Paul Roman Martinez fan club.

15
I think this may be a mistake on the part of the seller.  He has two of the Paul Roman Martinez The Dawn of Flight decks listed at almost the price of one during the kickstarter.  Go quickly if you want to get a set.

Thanks everyone.  I have figured out the password and have entered the Mystery Shop.   ;)

I heard a rumor that there was a PDF explaining all the mentalism goodies that are hidden in the Gnostic deck.  Do you know of this, or if it will be available with a purchase of the decks from Conjuring Arts?  Thank you for your time.

18
I am not sure if they stopped the sale due to the outcry from backers of the project.  The decks were 4.99 each except for the limited at 9.99.  The accessories are still rather discounted.

Any idea who's on board?

This is from the CardLauncher Facebook page:

I figure since I am the only one in the world other than the artist to ever hold one of Lorenzo's N°17 decks, I might as well enjoy it. The latest MPC 310gsm French casino black core bond paper with linen finish is just superb! Handles perfectly right out of the box, once you sever the CardLauncher hologo 3D seal and examine this very fine deck. Perfect alignment, absolutely no registration drift, it's just not possible, color faithful to Pantone Matching System + CMYK. The decks will be available if you don't win one on August 15th by pledging one of our premier decks campaigns about the 20th in VERY limited quantity, one (or both) per backer, and you must support one of the first four project campaigns to be eligible.

Four campaigns have been announced: Two "premier" decks, and two new artist decks: Lotrek will launch his Dark Venexiana decks, Gambler's Warehouse their Brimstone II, Giovanni Maroni his Good deck (Good & Evil, right?) so you can complete your Gio set, and Phil DeCosta with his Can-eh-diana deck will possibly be joined by one more, but I think the rest can wait until August 30th or September 14th.

New decks waves come 15 days apart on CardLauncher the first six weeks to give both the artists and the pledge backers a little breathing room. I will let them launch naturally after that, but perhaps every other Sunday day is a good? Maybe alternate Saturdays instead? What does everyone prefer? Natural chaos or controlled perfect mix? Alternate Saturdays, Sundays?

Eli Retschlag contributes his v1 of Scarlet Pearl "Radical 80's Throwback" deck. Another homage to times gone by from this Australian cardist and magician from Golden Beach, Queensland. Come watch his incredible card handling skills in one of our premier "sliders" on the website beginning August 15th at 12:01AM EDT / NYC time as we celebrate liberation from fraudulent projects forever and give away these two fabulous decks to each 25th new registrant who backs a deck in the first 24 hours. The first 30 winners receive both!

If it's as busy as we project, we'll make it 24 hours after registering, but we prepared for global demand by hosting on Amazon Cloud Services computing, and 1000 users at once won't even slow it down. We're ready with 100+ PoPs (Points of Presence) around the world with just over 50% in the US with clustered failsafe systems in all major cities and Canada. Another 45 around the world and growing weekly.

We re-engineered Crowd Funding for Playing Card Decks project campaigns, and creators and backers alike will be pleasantly surprised that we literally thought of everything "wrong" and fixed it or wrote new paradigm shifts to revolutionize the industry.

Come, join us, and never pay too much for shipping again. True Shipping+handling is built into our Backer Cart and the Multi Rewards Selector lets you customize every single way, each pledge just for you, and S&H for US, Canada or overseas shows exactly what you will pay.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: The Playing Card Collectors'

I think a bunch of very valid points have been made by everyone, and I remember mentioning to a few people just a few months into collecting that this reminded me of Comic Books and Sports memmorabilia's insanity at it's peak.

In my opinion, just observing, and this discussion has been had before, it seems the people doing the most screaming are speculators. Those same people that you mention Don selling off there collections. you look at what there selling and a lot of them are in for multiple bricks of any given deck. So their complaint isn't really about high cost, its about profit....for them. When did that become the responsablity of the designer? I don't get a lot of so called "Collectors", I really don't. One in particular has gone way out of his way to critisize, just to finish his rant with a "....but I'm in for 2 bricks" Is that a show of support? No, its greed.

Everyone is entitiled to their opinion, and Don, I actually commend you. Since day one, you've stuck to your plan and been pretty steady on how and what you buy. You know how to pay a compliment and offer a fair opinion without making the purchase based on your buying "Rules".....If more people were like that we wouldn't be having this discussion.

In the end, I choose how much I want to spend on what. As a "Collector" I'm happy with 1-3 decks of something, so I may be willing to bend the rule on occasion for a given new release. But you'll never hear me cry that I can't buy a brick or two because they are priced too high. I can see why magician and cardists buy bricks, and why price is a huge issue for them.........but those "Collectors" crying, I feel confindent in saying that a huge % of them are "Speculators" and that's why there all in a tizzy.

Just my opinion of course :)

+1 for Don's ability to make a constructive remark with out verbally vomiting useless gripping or whinning. Why on earth do you think that I still visit the Discourse?

Thanks Sparkz, for some reason I never thought of speculators.  Things are making much more sense now :j

I also agree with Jackson.  It is very nice to come to a place that doesn't have incessant complaining.  I was especially impressed with Don's constructive criticism on the Shannon Young Derby Deck.

The last 3 limited to 1,ooo decks I have purchased:
Jackson Robinson's Unbranded Reserve Note $40.oo
Chris Ovdiyenko Bicycle Oracle $27.oo Kickstarter price and an additional one at $32.oo free shipping after the Kickstarter.
Paul Carpenter's Zenith $20.00 plus shipping

The Hive is priced lower than all of them.  Granted it is a 1,000 print run for each color, as opposed to just one deck.  Is the card bubble approaching a critical point?  More than likely it is.  Will purchasing this deck contribute to it?  Perhaps...  I have said this several times and I think that Don is saying the same thing, speaking with your purchases speaks pretty loudly.  Until the buyers choose not to pay the prices that are demanded they will tend to escalate.  I really dig The Hive and am going to purchase at least one of each color.  I am doing so because I want to open and use the deck.  I would love to see an unlimited in the Green, at a price that I can replace the deck once I have used it up!  Collecting is a strange beast, it has been called a gentle madness.   ;)

I love Emily the Strange. But I've never seen this deck.

/bama

I have seen the deck show up on ebay, but never gilded.  It doesn't have repeating courts, and since it's Emily's deck, there is a suicide queen instead of the king.  The fronts of the cards have some metallic silver ink too.  For under $10.oo I am very impressed!
