Hello Forum Members - This Saturday I will be hosting a sale of rare, collectible, and every day playing cards at Cafe Rustico, 25 West 35th Street in Manhattan from noon to 5 p.m. I'll also be selling a wide range of magic materials. I'll have decks available from US Playing Card Company, Conjuring Arts/Expert Playing Card Company, Theory 11, Legends Playing Card Company, King's Wild Project, and numerous others. Among the collectible decks that will be on hand are the David Blaine Create Magic/Microsoft Deck, Zen Pure Red Prototype, Dan and Dave Smoke and Mirrors Private Reserve, and much more, including a handful of vintage decks. There also will be a wide range of everyday decks at great prices. Feel free to bring your own decks to show or sell. Hi Folks - Here are links to three magic-related interviews and a piece from the Today show that I hope you'll find of interest. They're all from my blog covering the New York magic scene..

First is an interview with magician Steve Cohen about the making of his "Tycoons" playing cards. He also discusses his love of card magic and mentions a new online project that will showcase his close-up magic. I posted this already at the "Plethora" so some of you might have seen it.

Card Lovers -

For those located in the New York City area, I'd like to mention the Herb's Magic "Black Saturday" sale which will be held in-person only on Saturday, November 29, from noon to 5 p.m., at Cafe Rustico, the magicians' hang out joint at 25 W. 35th  (b/t 5th & 6th Aves.) I think you will find some items of interest.

In respect to cards I will be offering a number of basic brands: Aviator, Phoenix, Tally Ho and Bee at special prices, ranging from 2.75 to 3.25. I'm expecting these will be of interest to magicians, however I do have some items that will most likely be of interest to card lovers and collectors. (Please note that NYS sales tax is additional for all items)

I have a small quantity of factory sealed Bee decks from Harrah's and Sierra Sid's casinos which I will be selling for $5 each. These are from approximately the early 1980s. The Sierra Sids decks are cool because it is such an obscure casino--there's a little drawing of a mountain in the retro-looking logo, while the Harrah's decks have custom jokers that use gambling imagery in a sort of abstract collage. I also have a very small quantity of factory-sealed blue Steamboat decks from around the same time frame (late 70s or early 80s) which I will be selling for $8 each. These have been selling in some cases for $15 and upward on eBay. Some sealed vintage Fournier 505s will also be available at $8.

I will also be offering some more recently-issued special and custom decks at around $4. Unfortunately I can't list the specifics here, but these are decks issued by notable participants in the special card market.

Aside from that, I carry nearly 100 different decks of cards and will have everything available, including some of the rarest of special issue decks. I also have a line of magic related books, tricks, and supplies which also will be available.

In addition we are having a visit from magician Xiang Liu, who will be demonstrating and selling his otherwise sold out Si-Fi Project, a DVD and gimmick that allows you to perform a remarkably organic looking floating ring routine. It looks as if earlier today a deck of green Bike 808s with acorn backs sold for $808. Got to appreciate that someone was willing to be playful with their bid amount while spending that much! Anyway, I don't have much of a historical perspective on previous sales of this kind but this seems impressive. Anyone have any comments on this? Anyone from here involved (who wants to say so)?

The New York Public Library currently features two 17th-century card decks and two relatively new decks from its collections in its exhibition "Play Things" on the third floor of its building at 42nd and Fifth Avenue. In each case only a sampling of cards is shown. The cell phone photos I've attached here don't do the materials justice, but you should get the idea. The two older decks are

 "A deck of cards depicting Titus Oates's 'Popish Plot," 1684; and
"Jeu de la Mythologie" also called "Jeu des Fables" (Game of mythology or game of fables) - 1644

The Library's descriptions of the cards note that the English deck depicts the "alleged existence of a Catholic conspiracy to assassinate King Charles II". It's cool to see the story of this supposed plot depicted on the faces of the cards. It reminded me almost of "The Da Vinci Code" or something like that. The French deck was designed to be "a didactic amusement for the young Louis XIV' and shows images of the Roman gods.

"Artball," 1972, by Don Celender, is an art piece in which the faces of art world celebrities are superimposed over football players in action poses.

The contemporary deck (2009) is by Tauba Auerbach

That's a cool deck. I grew up in Miami and have had a little bit of a fixation on the art deco hotels in Miami Beach. If you follow the links below you'll see the Atlantis at its height and at its unfortunate end. The Atlantis was actually a little outside of what is now thought of as the Art Deco district and its style seems to reflect a transition between the smaller classic Art Deco hotels and the larger "modern" style hotels that flourished in the 1950s. The Atlantis may not have been the world's most distinctive piece of architecture, but its loss was typical of what was happening around that time when there wasn't any hesitation in demolishing older buildings and replacing them with bigger-and therefore more profitable-hotels and condos. Thankfully it was just a few years later that the preservation efforts took hold, but in the meantime some very significant buildings were lost.

I realize I'm going off on a tangent from playing cards, but the heritage of these old hotels sort of appeals to me in the same way as the old decks do, so it's nice to be able to connect two interests. Thanks for showing the deck.

Don - Thanks for your response. When attempting to send a private message I am asked for a "Verification," which uses the Captcha. If I try to send the note without completing that I get an error message. It didn't work with the audio version either, although there's a chance that was due to operator error, so I'll try that again.

Hello - I've been having a problem with the Captcha image when trying to send a private message. Instead of seeing the info to enter, I just get the blue question mark - so it is impossible for me to send a message. I spent quite a bit of time on the phone with my computer company's support technicians trying to resolve this from my end because I think it is some sort of issue with Java, but I thought that it would be worth inquiring if anyone else is experiencing this or if it is possibly something stemming from the site.

This is beside the point, but I do wonder if the multiple layers of security to send a message are necessary since at that point one has already logged in via a password.

Aside from all this I hope to become a more active participant in the forum soon - rather than an active lurker. Thanks for any response or help with this.
