I'm about to refresh in a moment. Remember everyone, if the site crashes over the demand, don't keep refreshing the page.

That is great to hear! Thank you for the clarification of the deck. So I'm glad that I was not far off from thinking that this was similar to Pinochle. The shop owner who sold this to me kept telling me that they were tarot cards, which I know that they are not. He told me more that was wrong about the deck then nearly anyone I have met, haha. Although it did appear that he had an entire brick of Bee Squeezers for sale!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / USPCC German Skat Deck
« on: April 01, 2014, 05:55:41 PM »
I just picked up a few weeks ago and I had a few questions if anyone would be able the clarify

According to the Hochman, this deck includes the 7's through aces and each of the normal suits.  The deck was sold in sets of either 24 or 32 card decks.

As you can see by the picture,  I have only the 7's, 10's, royalty,  and aces. However,  I have 2 of each, giving me 48 cards.  Was it actually made like this at some point or do I have two 24 card decks? Also, I should point out that the back is the later butterfly back. The date code does appear on the bottom,  dating the deck around the 1920's. I'm very confused.

Look at the pips that are circling the ring.  The clubs that are on the top and bottom of the card are different sizes. One of them is clearly larger than the other.

[I just noticed the picture is sideways. The. Clubs are on the left and right of the picture I posted. And :-\ the are not the suits that are in the immediate center but they are the ones inside of the rings]

There is actually another one way back that I have found on all of my crown decks.  I'll post the picture soon.

So I wanted to keep everyone posted about this project. I have just completed the book itself. I will next be looking for a few locals to review and edit it to make sure that it is all in tip top shape.

Next, I will order just ONE book, to make sure that the quality is everything I wanted. Finally, I will be uploading it as a small kickstarter project! I hope everyone else is own board and as always, I appreciate the support! More updates to come!

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: The Case for Congress
« on: March 16, 2014, 11:51:56 AM »
Congress is a strange brand. I really like and enjoy the cards, but the backs are not designs. They are artwork in a sense, but not the same reason that other brands are. Take Bicycle brand as a prime example. Their backs are a universal back that it 2 way and uses only one plate plate because it is monochrome. These were made for mass production. Same with Bee brand and many others. Normally one design and one easy print.

Congress decks are not that simple. They have entire artworks on the back. This is a great thing if you like the subject matter! I bought a few decks of cards that had M.C. Escher just because it had his art on it. They were not made by Congress. But other than us card collectors who would be able to tell the difference?

Lets say that you had a picture of the Mona Lisa on the back of cards. And USPCC made a line of Congress cards with that image, and another company like Hallmark printed the same back design as well. Would an average consumer be able to tell the difference at first glance? Probably not. They would think, There's the Mona Lisa! I rarely find decks that I look at the back design and think "That is Congress!" I normally have to go looking for the Aces, Jokers, Case, etc. I think that this aspect is what makes Congress not recognized as well as other Brands.

With that being said, I still love my congress decks and I would probably never trade them, but I'm curious if other members agree with my thoughts.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Kings Wild Lucite Cases

As soon as I can convince the wife, I will want to pick up a few one these. I think they are spectacular because of the transparent sides with nearly perfect visibility.

But it is right, it isn't worth spending more on a case than what you spent on the cards. But if you didn't spend that much on your cards you wouldn't need to display them this way. Ultrapro makes some card cases that are only a few dollars and I use those to display a few of my decks that aren't worth as much. But these ones here are quality and expensive for a reason!

Card cases big enough to hold a deck?  Can we see them?

I'll post a few of mine soon, but here is a link to them: http://www.ultrapro.com/product_info.php?products_id=652

I have been using the 100 count boxes which hold more than 2 decks. However, The larger ones actually get smaller near the bottom of the cases. It can hold decks with tuck boxes and celo, but they are normally a tight fit. I used to get them at walmart back when I collected sports cards and card games and they would normally have sleeves as well. Because the sleeves are a tad bigger, the boxes make up for the size difference and hold cards in tuck cases quite well.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Vintage - Antique Meanings
« on: March 14, 2014, 12:23:16 PM »
We also have to keep in perspective that the term "Vintage" relates to the original manufacture of a particular item. Meaning a vintage Bicycle deck will vary in age range than a vintage Ellusionist deck. Because the word vintage actually relates to wine and is used to describe when he wines were made instead of a general term for older than usual. For example, vintage computers are at earliest 10 years because of how quickly that they have evolved compared to playing cards.

I remember that a few years ago I visited the Antiques Roadshow event in El Paso. They explained that the term Antique is anything that is older than 50 years. So remember everyone, we all own quite a bit of antique dirt in our yards! I know what you are thinking, and I agree that it seems like this is too soon and vague to easily describe cards.

Given that these terms are all in perspective of the overall picture, I would say that the dates that we have all discussed already would be where I would adequately describe my cards.

The detailed line work on three reminds of something that M.C. Escher would draw (My favorite artist.) Three is my vote as well.

They don't see it what was because that are in too much shock! Great display!

Thanks Paul! I like their selections. I'm sure that I will be making a chart shortly on what I want and what options and prics may be the best soon. I will surely look into this company as well.

Love it! I will be buying it soon. It looks like it will be a great addition to my collection.

I am also writing a book about playing cards too. I would love to discuss some of the publishing details with you if you would like. If  not, no worries, but I thought I would propose the offer.

What else are you looking for in playing cards? What are some of the favorite in your collection and why? This way we can point you in the right direction.

My personal suggestion are White Knuckles. Read about them and why the designer designed them the way he did, great stuff!

I noticed that too with these cards. I actually enjoy the Arrco Standard more than most. They just seem more "full" on the card if that makes any sense.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Arrow Brand Silhouette Deck
« on: February 26, 2014, 11:25:57 AM »
I was wondering if anyone could provide any more info about a deck a got a year or two ago. It is from the Arrow Playing Card Company, so I know it is between 1920-1935. It is silver colored and has a silhouette of a woman's head as the back design. It is in a very nice hard case which has a small frame on the top. The frame has another card with the silhouette. I will be posting pictures for it later.

My questions: Does anyone know if this is a regular thing for Arrow Playing Cards to print these silhouette decks? I am thinking that they might be custom based on the purchaser, but I honestly have no idea since I have not seen any others.

I would include a copy of the PDF for anyone who bought a normal physical copy of the book. After all, it is not that difficult to email a link to download it. Progress is looking good on it!

Jackson, I know you are just brainstorming ideas here, but I would probably buy nearly every design you have posted so far! But I'm sure that your signature series will be perfect!

I am seeing a few different publishers that offer a large amount of printing prices. They vary from decent to CRAZY high pricing per book.

I think many of the services that they offer are catered specifically for them to put the books in their stores only. Which if I do a Kickstarter, would not be an option. While I am finishing up the book, I would like to get a feel for what people would want to have. I have 3 different options. These are just general prices because I do not have the final price set in stone. Please post what you would be interested in:

Option 1: Ebook: This would be a small backers goal. I would email you a copy of the PDF for probably around $5. This option would also be included in any other copies of the book, I would gladly email you this as well.

Option 2: Paperback: Paperback version of the book, 200 pages, color pictures and pages for all of them. It might be around $25-$35 including shipping.

Option 3: Hardback limited edition: This would be a specialized version, probably limited edition which would be numbered and signed. Hardcover, dust jacket, etc. : probably around $60-$80.

There are not set in stone yet, I would just like to see what everyone would be interested in and if I would even consider for my Kickstarter if I decide to use that course to publish it. Looking forward to your feedback!

That is a good looking deck! I will be surely backing it on Kickstarter tomorrow. I have always enjoyed decks of cards that have a simple but sleek design. That folder is really nice too! Can't wait!
