Playing Card Plethora / Re: The Flight Deck
« on: August 19, 2014, 07:44:40 PM »
Thanks for the kind words here guys!

I just wanted to give you a final update on the numbers from the printing project so you know how many decks are out there.
I printed roughly 2,700 Blue Bicycle Flight Decks and 2,700 Red Bicycle Flight Decks, and 1,000 each of the Unbranded Blue and Red decks.
I printed 1,000 of the Flight Logbook Deck holders.
I have about 50 each of the Blue Bicycle and Red Bicycle decks left. And I ended up with just enough of the unbranded decks to fill the logbooks I had left.
So I'm essentially out of the Blue and Red Bicycle decks. I'm not going to even add them to my webstore. I also decided that I won't be reprinting those through Bicycle. So I guess they ended up as limited edition after all. Whatever is out there for the Flight Bicycle decks is all there will ever be!

Emmanuel, your deck is a two color deck, red and black. That means they save some money by only using two printing plates. Do they pass that savings on to you? Any other manufacturer would have a two color price that is cheaper than the four color price but for some reason I don't picture USPCC going down in price so that could explain why they are so happy when they talk to you!
The question is, when a new designer decides to use USPCC, which version of the company are they going to get? The one you dealt with, or the one I dealt with and that many others seemed to have dealt with also? And would better customer service have made a difference when their prices are so high?

Thanks, Don.
It's good to know other people have that problem with USPC, not just me.
I think part of the problem is what Marcus said, people always comment that the USPC quality is still better than the competitors. A lot of people hear this and think they need to go with USPC to produce their decks. But I think the quality difference is not worth the cost difference. When I first found out the price to add things like foil or embossing to the decks I though it was a typo because the price was so ridiculous. This collectible playing card subset is based entirely upon perception and I think we need to stop re-enforcing the idea that only the USPC can produce a good deck of cards. The USPC doesn't need a presence on this forum or any other card forum because there are already hundreds of people talking about how their decks are slightly better than other manufacturers and it scares people off from trying those other manufacturers. It also serves to drive up the prices of decks and cut into profit margins which means deck creators are forced to constantly release new decks every two or three months to try and make up for the small per deck profit margin. This constant flow of new decks are competing with each other for dollars and competing in collections for shelf space. You already have deck designers very subtly hinting about not being able to sell off their decks after the Kickstarter is over so in order to keep profits coming in they immediately announce their next deck. This is kind of a vicious cycle that will kill this developing market if creators aren't careful.

Hey guys,
This is for all the designers and deck producers out there...
I just finished production on the Flight Deck Playing Card Series and delivered to my backers and I had some thoughts and questions.
I have produced a lot of products over the past few years including board games, hard bound graphic novels, messenger bags, t-shirts, resin statues and more. All of these I do for my self published graphic novel series. This was my first playing card set and my first time working with USPCC.
I've dealt with factories in China, Taiwan, and the United States. The USPCC was by far the worst experience I've had in any of those projects. They were so unprofessional and unclear with their numbers. Of course the problem with their numbers is solved once you've printed a deck with them, now I know exactly what decks from them would cost. But I will never again use USPCC because of their poor communication skills, terrible scheduling, and high pricing.
I'm curious to hear if anyone else here has had this experience with the USPCC. And if you had a great experience, have you manufacturing anything with another company that you can compare it to?
None of this has to do with product quality. The product quality is great, but it is not great for the price. I could have gotten a cheaper deck with more features at a competing company. If I do a reprint on the Flight Deck or another deck it will not be through the USPCC.

I don't understand how he considers it a "Parody" deck. All the actors are drawn very straightforward and are very recognizable. And as for "fan art". When something is mass produced it quickly becomes less fan art. In making this deck he would have to assume that netflix wouldn't care, Kevin Spacey's production company wouldn't care, and every single actor featured on the deck wouldn't care. All of those actors have lawyers whose job is to protect their likenesses. He'd better hope they send him a cease and desist now rather than after everyone has been charged. Right now he could just walk away from the project, but once money has been exchanged it will become a much bigger problem for him.

As a point of reference I recently used the likeness of aviators for my Flight Deck project and had to deal with a few estates for likeness issues. After a lot of research and exchanges with multiple lawyers I can tell you for certain that this sort of item is not protected under fair use and that's the reason why USPC isn't printing it. They have a disclaimer about celebrity likenesses in big red letters on their quote form for just this reason. The would never print this deck. If he wants to make some unlicensed House of Cards products he should make some limited edition art prints. Those would be protected under fair use.

I just received the dummy mock up from the factory for the two deck holder. It looks great! Of course this is a blank white with no debossing but it feels very substantial and holds the decks very tightly. I'm very excited about how it's looking. I will post it to the project tomorrow but I wanted you guys to get a first look at it. Also I ordered this before I moved the buttons to the side but the rest is the same. Moving the buttons to the side allowed for a larger imprint on the front. I wanted to create a truly unique deck holder and that meant starting from scratch!

Below is the mockup of the book open so you can see what the imprint will look like.

I saw you got a mention in the Kickstarter email, congrats!

Thanks Mike! Talking to you really cleared up some mysteries of playing card production. I love how your new decks came out, especially that unique tuck box.

I agree, someone could come along and do another zombie/steampunk/cthulhu deck, but they would have to be better than the other decks that came before to really get noticed. If you look at the decks that fall under those categories on KS, they seem to be finding it harder to get funding than decks that came out a year or two ago.

New update is up, but it's mostly about how to do add ons. Since you guys are kickstarter pros I'm sure you already know how to do it! Meanwhile, I hope you noticed I added a dealer coin. I got a lot of comments from people requesting it right before the project launched.

Thanks! And I'll have to remember to draw a skull on your package. LOL
I was thinking of doing a cheat sheet card but decided on the gaff cards instead.
And the reason for that is I'm hoping to do a small art booklet that will fit into the Flight Log, or at least release a .pdf of it.
But After drawing these I now know that Orville had the mustache and Wilbur was the bald one. I'd know those guys anywhere

I'm in.  These are GORGEOUS.  What an elegant art deco look to the whole thing.  And while I get it that your skull is a signature thing (and not in keeping with the art deco theme at all), THANK YOU for not putting a skull on every card.  One on the Ace of Spades?  That's cool ... your signatures, your rules.

A question ... if we're supposed to recognize who the people are on the courts, it would be really nice if one of the extra cards would have a cheat sheet to tell us who's who.

This is a must buy for me.

Well done.

Consider a WW2 fighter plane nose art deck!  Someone's probably done one before, but that kind of art never seems to fall out of fashion!

I would still leave out the skull on the Ace.  You're right in that the two decks cover civil aviation, which makes the fighter craft artwork seem all the more out of place.  An image of an attractive stewardess or aviatrix (from the days before we called them by gender-neutral terms such as "flight attendants" and "pilots") would probably rock on that card.  Even wing walkers would fit better!

I'm definitely keeping that Aviator Skull. It's sort of one of my signatures. I'm all for making changes when people make suggestions. I've made a lot of adjustments to the deck the past couple weeks based on people's suggestions but I guess this one is important to me!

Maybe one of your other ideas would work well for the LE deck? Who knows! People definitely like pinup art. But I have a lot of female fans and they definitely let me hear it if I do too much cheesecake stuff so I have to be careful with that.

It's an aviator skull smoking a cigarette with his scarf blowing in the wind. The deck mostly deals with civil aviation so I wanted a nod to combat pilots in there and I like the idea of the Ace of Spades being different and kind of gritty. There was this great painting from WWI I saw once and it was this pilot flying out of the clouds firing down on some enemies and in the co-pilot seat the grim reaper was sitting there pointing out his targets. So I wanted to create a deck that was positive and full of hope and progress, but at the same time had a couple nods to some darker imagery.

Right now I've got some ideas for some LE decks involving different color schemes and even a sequel set of decks that could involve more advanced flight but if things go well that stuff will all be known in time. So fingers crossed, we get to a point with this campaign that I can produce those LE decks. And you're probably right about the blow ups, I'll add a note!

I like the design a lot - but there's one element that just looks way too out of place for me.

The Ace of Spades on the Airplane deck - why did you make the face that of a horned devil skull?  It doesn't fit the theme very well to my eyes.  I would think a "daring young man in his flying machine" would have been a better choice.  Is there a specific, thematic reason for choosing that image?

A word of advice - make it clear to people that clicking on the images will send them to a blown-up version on a new page.  I don't see many KS projects offering close-ups like that and it gives people a chance to really see the art details up close.  It could convince a fence-sitter to become a backer.

Hey, for the bonus limited-edition deck - are you making a jet-flight deck?  Or perhaps even spaceflight?  :))

Wow, looks great. What's the print run on each deck? Also, what time is the launch?

Thanks! Right now the plan is around 5,000 for each deck and about 1,000 for the flight log. I have an LE version of each deck planned but that's a stretch goal down the line. We'll see if that happens!

I'm launching my first playing card project on Kickstarter Monday Feb, 24.
The Flight Deck Playing Cards and Folio set.
Here's an image and a preview link. I've gotten a lot of feedback from playing card collectors, magicians, and aviators. I'm finally ready to launch!
Here's your last chance to take a look before it goes live!
