For those interested, Bicycle has a full scan of this handbook on their website: https://bicyclecards.org/mrs-robinsons/

Congrats!  That is also on my wishlist, but I doubt I will be pursuing it for price reasons unless I can find a damaged or incomplete deck like you did.  That's really all most people are able to or willing to get some of these classic antique decks which are in very short supply.  Great find either way, even if it is 52-J!  ;)

Playing Card Plethora / Re: "Ars Goetia" card game

Hi, thanks for sharing, good artwork and has a good chance.  My first thought was why do the cards look like they were photocopied, but I see that was a style you are going for.  However, it looks too similar to a fax or an image that was scanned in or copied at low resolution.  Perhaps try making the background pure white or experiment with other aging techniques.  My next thought was what printer, but I see in comments you are considering Make Playing Cards.  Not the best choice, but a good option for low volume.  However by not listing it the potential backers may question if you thought out and planned all expenses and thus may be worried about it falling apart during printing or fulfillment, but the price and funding goal are in line so maybe not as much of a concern.  Either way though you should pick a printer and make that obvious.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Framing uncut sheets
« on: October 10, 2017, 04:40:39 PM »
Well it only took well over 3 years, but I finally got all my uncuts framed and up on the wall.  I really liked the idea I saw once about including the actual deck framed with the uncuts, but that makes framing even more of a challenge and requires shadow box frame, etc.  So I just created informational images with the tuck and then used that instead.  I got quotes on custom framing these and basically for the cost of one of them I could buy a higher end mat cutter (Logan Artist Elite, although I got with 60% off list with coupon) and buy mat board in bulk to do it myself, so that's what I did.  Another reason it took so long.  That and getting nearly a dozen frames and mat was pretty expensive while money and time was being spent building out the basement where most of these are now on display.

I just have 3 left to do, the pipmen pair and the Dondorf uncut once it arrives.  The Pipmen using the MPC layout means they are wider than the frames and matboard (over 24") so either I will have to do without the deck image or place it to the right/left instead of underneath.

I did use acid free mat board, but due to price just went with cheaper IKEA poster frames with acrylic instead of glass.  I also would have liked to do proper archival style mounts with t hinge, but with the tolerances and size I had to instead use linen tape in more liberal amounts (I have to go back and fix the art of money set as that's how I found out it really only works with smaller and thicker photo prints).  Still, the house is pretty well conditioned and these are away from sunlight for the most part so willing to take a chance.  I went with mat board and frame size of 24x36 (IKEA Link) and the USPCC uncut actual card area size is 21 1/4" x 25 1/4", but you'll want to slightly decrease that so the cut indicators on the edge don't show.  This is also important is that edge gives you something to mount to the mat as actual uncut size is just under 22x26.5".

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Playing cards identification

A quick Google search says these are Flying Horse, although your joker and backs are different and suggests number 66 which isn't listed on site below.  There have been decks on ebay for sale in the past and currently single cards from same company, but the challenge will be most people will not know what they are so finding them to buy may be tricky.  It's also possible you have a mix of cards from multiple decks with same back?  Anyhow, good luck.

Design & Development / Re: Kickstarter Confusion
« on: May 09, 2017, 10:40:54 AM »
This maybe obvious, but regarding costs and setting price, what you really need here is a spreadsheet.  Just use Google Sheets if you don't have Excel or something similar.  Put in all your fixed costs, things like artist fee, website, marketing budget, etc.  Then put in all your variable costs and have those as a condition of how many sold, if you sell 100 at $10 you bring in $1,000 and Kickstarter fees taken out and then the cost per deck at 100, etc.  Repeat this in another row/column for what if 250, etc depending on the qty cost change from gamecrafter.  This should help you find your break even point and then help you determine what your kickstarter goals needs to be.  This will also tell you your sunk costs that you are stuck paying if it fails to fund.

Good luck!

Don, great response, thanks!  I had heard much of it in places here and there, but having it all in one place is awesome.  Enders, you should consider upgrading your original entry with the corrections and details from Don.  This would then make a great addition to the 101 section.

The most interesting new thing I learned was about MPC using laser cut and the problems that creates.  I wasn't aware they used that method, but that explains the slight handling issues and well explained!

Goof off or Goo Gone would likely be similar to lighter fluid technique, but I would imagine the yellowing is probably from age as Don said.  Definately proceed with caution there and in small amounts.

I learned quite a bit about acid free paper (or lack of as possible in your case) and the damage they can cause as I researched and taught myself how to do proper mat cutting/framing for my uncuts.  It's quite possible the inside tuck yellowed due to the acidity in them leaching out over time and now shows on cards?  https://www.scienceabc.com/pure-sciences/yellowed-why-does-paper-turn-yellow-with-time.html

For the smoke smell issue, I know there were a few threads over at BGG about that and some suggested methods.  Here's an example https://boardgamegeek.com/article/25314555

Hi, yes I did create a thread on that last year - http://www.playingcardforum.com/index.php?topic=9471.msg122850

Not a whole lot of interest here it seems, but the group over at UC took to it pretty well after I posted there.

There is some pretty good interest in the upcoming transformation deck though, especially for me!

Since you mentioned color... One thing a few first time designers have had problems with is faithful color reproduction on the final print.  I'm not sure if it's due to not properly reviewing the sample, making changes after, relaying on different monitors/pictures or making the mistake of designing in RGB vs CMYK, etc.  You sound like a professional so probably not an issue, but something to double check - better to be late than wrong.  Which brings up another point, build in buffer time into your schedule - better to ship early than disappoint and be late.

You may also want to talk with Ben Jones from Elephant Playing Cards or Harris Soetikno of Cardazine (don't think active anymore though) since they did recent decks and were based in Australia.

Looking great, hope you recover soon!

When and where can we expect to see this available for (pre) sale?  Will this be a KickStarter or other pre-sale method, are your printing direct and then selling from stock?

I'll be shocked if I buy more than a handful of decks in 2017, but this will be one of them.  Well done.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Four Arms on the King of Hearts
« on: December 19, 2016, 05:41:59 PM »
Since the modern traditional court evolved from the Rouen pattern of cards in the 1500s, being copied and reproduced many times, the details were lost in the process.  Especially considering the crude methods of reproduction involving carved wooden plates and just simple process of reproduction.  This combined with moving from full portrait to mirrored bust style means a lot has changed and hands were simply lost if there was not enough contrast or was lower in the original.  As an example, the King of Clubs used to have a hand holding the orb, but now it is simply floating.  Basically it's the only one that has the 2nd hand make it through the journey of time and reproductions.

Quote
Even as early as the 17th century, English manufacturers had blurred the details of their French invented characters, and their duped blunder in reproduction was taken as fact and faithfully duplicated over time. What once looked like the swing of a battle-axe may now seem like the hilt of a sword, and where there was once sword, may not now even be a hand. Things got lost, things were changed. These were the inauspicious semblances of the English Pattern.

Since it's been a few years since PCDB was mentioned, I should mention for future reference and for the few that don't know about it:   Now called Portfolio52 since Alex Chin of Seasons Playing Cards took ownership/control, is my method to manage my inventory and also for many others.  With over 4,000 decks in the database, the 1,000+ members have a total of over 250,000 decks in their combined collections, it's certainly the most popular solution out there.

It includes deck scans and details for each deck, plus ways to categorize/view by artist, brand, manufacturer, publisher, etc.  One of the best features is the trade/wish lists and a match process to help you find decks you want.  Alex is also in the process of yet another major new version and revamp of the system which hopefully will be available in the coming months, fixing some lingering issues and a ton of new improvements.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Origins - Shadows of History
« on: September 20, 2016, 12:21:59 AM »
Given your history and your great art I think a full body court would do just fine, especially since it's a re-imagining of a classic deck.  If nothing else, doing it as a special limited edition variant could work.  I would be much more interested if it were like the originals with full body court anyhow.

That looks MUCH better.  I would still work with your final printer and their specific templates to see how much further out you could push it though.  Please keep sharing updates and especially launch date.   8)

I really like the art, it's different and fun, but still has good artistic merit!  The only thing holding it back is it feels like it's great art thrown onto a card instead of a great art playing card.

  • The first is the layout used where the image is a framed artwork with the colored background instead of faces directly on the card.  In the case of the KoC it seems like you could easily remove the yellow background and push the faces right/left and resize to allow for the entire crown to be shown.  However, in the case of other images that's not really possible.  Making the image and background to take up the entire card and removing the white border entirely obviously has playability concerns, but if it's art deck who cares.  Still, I think it's better to continue on your current track and keep a white border for playability and retain your general layout and consider ways to minimize the downsides of this layout.
  • You have a lot of white space on the edges, check with your planned printer and see how close you can push the indices to the edge and then also see how much closer you can pull the central artwork towards the indices and still make it flow.
  • Additionally, or alternatively, you could utilize that white space on the edges to add related decorative elements.  Perhaps something as simple as a long wavy line of the same color as the background on the left and right sides under the indicies to make it feel like the borders are part of the artwork instead of a thick white border.

I've had to greatly reduce my purchases lately due to lack of space and have become very selective, but this will mostly likely be the exception that I'll buy, especially if further changes are made to address the concerns mentioned.  Nice work!

Very cool, I love comparison shots like that, thanks for sharing!

Have you seen this website?  It has some nice overlay options for old photographs over Google street view.  The only problem is many of the images were placed from older street view images so some of the really seamless overlays now are off.  Still, it's a neat tool. http://www.whatwasthere.com/
