Not usually sold on the tuck alone, but wow, so in for this. So what are people's favourite colour? I'm going to have to go with that blue!

2
I REALLY like the look of these, most practical for your favourite decks I would have thought. Man international shipping tho... Hopefully not bank breaking!

Not that I'm accusing you of this, but just a small piece of advice. Don't collect decks because they are "must collect" decks. I hate to see this hobby of ours become another fly by night fad chasing exercise. Collect decks that mean something to you personally. My deck list is probably a lot different than the others because I tend to prefer USPC designed decks - old and new. The KS craze I mostly stay away from - maybe to my own chagrin, but it doesn't really excite me as much as other people. However, if I back a deck, it's simply because I truly like the deck, and not because it's the new hot deck everyone is backing. I like Daniel Madison's stuff, because his design style really speaks to me as a designer. I don't care for the Jackson Robinson stuff as much, although he is one hell of an incredible designer don't get me wrong - it's just a style preference.

I thought this was a really good point. I have probably fallen foul to what you describe a couple times. I sometimes wonder what causes the preference we have in card design, whether it's a compulsory neurological reason or just completely arbitrary...

The Conversation Parlor / Re: Generally, one to open and one sealed?
« on: September 08, 2014, 05:39:33 PM »
I find it tremendously difficult to open a deck, any deck, I suppose this is down to the fact I'm less of a user of the actual cards, I can't do magic and have been practicing for far to long to be able to do a proper fan, without success. I also think that some decks once opened may not be looked at for a long time and I have to debate with myself as to whether it is worth it. I don't know my personal answer yet, it seems many change their opinion over time! Maybe ask again in 2 years :P

Hi Daniel,

There's a very similar topic already on this in the conversation parlour.

http://www.playingcardforum.com/index.php?topic=6855.0

Hopefully this will help. Maybe a Mod can merge these?

Ah, sorry. I didn't think to check there, shall be sure to do so next time I think to post something!

This is something I have debated long and hard with myself. I have as of yet not come to a conclusion and was hoping for some help. One of my favourite parts of deck collecting is the ability to display my most prized decks, most of which I feel a physical repulsion from ever opening, even if I may have multiples. This troubles me because cards were made to be used in CARD games right? To be played with and enjoyed. It feels almost as if I'm doing the designer a bit of a disservice by not using and enjoying them to the full.

On the other hand, by not opening them, they may keep longer and so I can hopefully enjoy the designers work long into the future. Does it matter? Is it just personal choice?

I would be really interested in any thoughts you guys may have on this topic!

Thanks

Dan.

For me a good tuck box is almost as important as nice card design, it's what I see most often when looking at my collection. My top 3 are:

Tuck Box
1) Atelier (Robert Padbury) [I was surprised I chose this as my number one, something about the simplicity compared to most other tucks just makes me love it!]
2) Zenith (Encarded)
3) Holmes Baker Street LE (KingsWildProject)
(mentions to Bicycle Archangel, Independence (KWP), Origins (Rick Davidson) and JAQK)

Rather than specific decks, I'm going to offer general advice.

There are loads and loads of playing cards out there.  You will NEVER collect them all, so please, for the sake of your bank account, DON'T TRY!  :))

Go slow with your initial purchases.  Get decks that are currently still available at the original retail price rather than hunting older, rarer, more costly ones.  You can look into them later as you gain more experience as a collector.

Please be picky about what you buy!  I started off willy-nilly, buying whatever the hell I wanted - and now many of those decks are sitting in my collection, hardly touched.  They were interesting for a while, but the charm wore off.  I might revisit them now and then as a goof, but it probably would have been a smarter choice to forgo buying them in the first place.

Such good advice! I encountered that when I first discovered the playing card creative hub that is KickStarter, bit of a rabbit in headlights effect, I was stunned and backed a few more than I should have, luckily most were really good!

Amazing..!

Despite the name shenanigans these look really good, can't wait to see more.

In your experience, were fulfillment companies something you considered? I know I could easily partner with a KS project to fulfill projects in Europe for about $5 for 1-4 decks and $10 for larger, this also meaning that no VAT would need to be paid by a backer in Europe on their 'purchase' by EU law, but it doesn't seem like KS are built for allowing this kind of thing to occur, ie different rates for EU customers.

Technically they may still end up paying the VAT but just not know it, if the project creator is sending his decks to an EU fulfilment house and they've paid 20% customs on arrival, that cost has to be accounted for somewhere. The only reasonable assumption to make in my opinion would be that it's included in the project at the outset. So they may not be paying he 20% VAT on import but they would elsewhere, having said that they would likely save themselves the handling fee from the postal service.

Thanks for both replies. I see what you mean about the factoring it into the overall price, I do however find it hard to argue against it!  The VAT conversation is a really hard one, because it is rather unrelated to the project creator, they don't have to account for it in shipping price and it doesn't help fund the project, just the local governments. So any offer from an EU fulfillment company would save the customer the import VAT and pay it themselves on arrival. What I'm trying to get at is that the saving of the customer, if an EU fulfillment service were to be used for EU customers, is much larger than the saving made by the KS creator. I think the saving for the project creator only comes from sending one bulk package instead of a hideous number of parcels. I could quote numbers I've found from research I've done if wanted.

Shipping sucks no matter how you slice it. Rob was correct when he said the problem will NEVER be solved until KS changes the method but unfortunately they wont change it.

I have shipped 1 or 2 decks and my advise would be to charge a fair and reasonable price for your shipping. Even if you provide free shipping there will 300 people who gripe that it is too expensive. If you think I'm kidding or being sarcastic, I am sadly not. Do over charge for it and DO NOT under charge as that will lead to you going bankrupt and then no one will get any rewards and that is worse than expensive shipping.

This problem is a real shame, and even more so because international backers are just used to it at this point as Rose said. I know that personally I wanted to back for many more decks of a few projects because I knew I would use and love using them, but it can spiral in relation to cost.

PS. I wasn't asking this with the idea of me setting up a playing card project in mind (art skills so not good enough for that!) but I hope maybe someone who is may see your post and be saved some troubles!

Dan,
This is a huge problem on KS. It will continue to be a problem until KS changes there policy. There is no reason why they can't separate all shipping and make it exact to each order. As long as they are making an extra 5% on the shipping. Then it's not going to change.
If someone is only charging $5 to ship a deck international- then they are loosing money. Most projects are in the $9-$12 range. To ship to the UK, it may not cost that much. To ship to Australia is more. The shipping gets averaged, and some pay more than they should, some less.
I know some designers will use a fulfillment company overseas. That way, they send the decks in bulk to the company- they send it to each backer. I'm not sure how much money that saves.

Am I understanding it correctly then to think that when setting up a KS project there are the options for 1. Shipping to US. and 2. Shipping to anywhere else. ? If so, that really is crazy.

1 It varies, but typically it's a padded envelope from the regular postman

2. Yes, international shipping cost a lot and some project creators are generous, some are right on the money, and some over charge

3. Absolutely

Thanks for the insight. On the third point, I think it is also a massive problem that in a lot of countries you get charged VAT on an import (about 20% in most cases I believe) + handling fees which can mean with shipping that one deck is almost 3x more expensive, which is a problem obviously.

Playing Card Plethora / Questions about KickStarter Shipping
« on: July 11, 2014, 06:24:09 PM »
I'm from the UK and have backed a few projects, but these are some questions that have been in the back of my head.

  • How do the rewards normally get sent out to the US backers, ie is it as a parcel, padded envelope etc and what proportion of the ~$10-12 does it take up?.
  • International Shipping seems to vary somewhat, form ~$5 to ~$10-12 for one deck (and by extension, for other tiers). Is there a reason for this?
  • Do you think that the extra cost of shipping decks internationally is the main reason that almost always >75% of backers are from US?

Some random questions but these questions come to me when thinking about KickStarter!

Thanks Guys  :)

I will have to go for the limited edition ones (not complaining!) as I'm fairly certain there isn't anywhere near me in UK where they will stock the others. Look really awesome Jackson!

Only really like the look of 27 and the Harry Potter ones merely down to the nostalgia effect!

I really like the look of this deck, not sure what's up with having 2 printers though? But I can only give a thumbs up for the Watsky video at the bottom of the page!

I like. Stutzman could draw on a rock and I'd buy it! Good stuff!
Ha! I have to agree, these look like such cool cards. I know some people are all for the simple back designs, but these ones are my sorta cards.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Casino Decks
« on: July 05, 2014, 05:27:17 PM »
These sort of decks look really interesting, certainly not something I've ever come across in the UK. Unsurprising given how few casinos there are. I was wondering though, are these decks ones that have been used in the casinos, or spares when they changed design?

PS, the 'interesting fact' was really good, makes me wonder what other menial things are being done by inmates that you wouldn't expect!

OK, there are two kinds of casino decks - canceled and uncanceled.

The majority of casino decks circulating among the public are canceled - these are decks that have been used on the casino floor at a table and have been played with.  Typically, a paper deck will be used for only a handful of hours - anywhere from one or two hours to perhaps a shift, but not longer.  They're not used at poker tables much these days, where they've been replaced with plastic cards, but they still get much use at blackjack and baccarat tables.  When they're "decommissioned", they're bundled off to the prison system, sorted, packed and canceled.  Cancellation used to be a simple drilled hole off-center through the pack, but these days they take a marker and draw a line on all four sides of the deck, put it in the box and saw an entire corner off the pack, box and all.

There's a rare few that don't get canceled.  Let's say "Casino A" have blue and green decks with the same design.  They decide to replace the green decks with red ones.  The day the casino stops using the greens, the entire remaining stock of green decks can be sold off without being canceled - they're no longer in use on the floor and can't be used by card cheats to swap out cards in their deck for cards in play on a gaming table.  Since casinos don't change their colors or back designs very often, and will probably try to do so when they're low on the old color in the first place, uncanceled casino decks tend to be far less frequently found.

An example of this would be the "Brown Wynn" deck that Theory11 was selling in their early days of operation.  It was felt by some cardists that the brown Wynn Casino deck, Logo style back (as opposed to "Signature style") had exceptional handling qualities and T11 managed to get possession of a fair amount of the uncanceled decks.  Some people make the mistake of thinking that, because it was sold by T11, it's a "T11" deck, as in something they created, when in fact they were simply selling it, just like how they (and I think Ellusionist as well) were once selling David Blaine decks.

I couldn't have asked for a better answer, thanks!

I took advantage of this so quickly, kind of wondering if I should have now, shall be burdened with far too many metallic rider backs and some medallion decks it seems..!

Red Jaqks are going for $20 plus on ebay. If you wanted the other cards you got. Then it's a good deal. You could always sell the other decks at a slight loss, and still be in good shape.

That's true, although they may go down a bit with all the purchases from this offer? That is if many are put up onto ebay, not kept. It sound like a plan though!

Was the black table and Tshirt used as a tactical move to portray/add to the dark nature of the subject of the deck? I wonder!  :)

Have to say, I like the look of the background of the back design, the computer chip look I guess? I could see that being used quite effectively on a different deck with a different theme I suppose but this deck certainly doesn't seem worth it to me.
