Playing Card Plethora / Re: Buskers by Erik Mana
« on: March 15, 2015, 03:47:15 PM »
Even though I'm a fan of Erik Mana's work (Mana V2 was the first KS project I ever backed!), and even though the theme is one of my favourites in recent times, I'm not too surprised that Erik pulled the plug. There was something like 2 weeks where funding didn't seem to move at all.

I hope Erik goes with EPCC next time round... after all, quality matters. Hopefully some sort of extra-limited (possibly a "Private Reserve" type of variant) edition of the Buskers will also be introduced -- after all, ultra-limited decks extend the appeal to an audience that may not otherwise be interested.
I think it had more to do with his previous project having not been delivered in a reasonable timeframe.
I would bet it is quickly relaunched after completion of his previous endeavor.

Got a two deck early bird plus an original deck!  I never get early birds... I'm super stoked!

I like it, when am I going to be able to purchase?

Not sure yet if these will actually be produced - will depend on a few things...

For anyone who is interested in seeing this deck actually get printed, please request an invitation at the mundaine.com website so I can get an idea of how many people are out there.

Thanks!

Just my opinion, but I think the best way to gauge how many people would be interested would be to create a kickstarter campaign.  But only if you were serious about producing this deck of cards and all of what that entails. My feeling is that as long as these are produced by a reputable printer at a fair market value with a reasonable funding goal you might be surprised by the volume of pledges you would receive.
The whole "enter your email and we will think about it" approach comes off as a phishing scheme to me.

I like everything about these, especially the story behind them. It gives them more value to me.
The backs are of a nice design and everything is done in a tone and color scheme that really represents the subject matter well.  The courts are one way, true, but to me they are miniature pieces of art that are done beautifully.  Cant wait to add these to my collection.

Discount code (11checkout10p) works for 10% off your order.

JNuggs would definitely make a statement though.

A statement of love!
I think the point would be lost on my wife either way. She would just see an ugly article of clothing made from cards and I would be out some highly sought after cards.
I think dinner and some chocolates would be preferable.

Now if you really loved your significant other, you'd make this dress from JNuggs!
On the other hand, if you would like to pay your bills, you wouldn't.  Maybe some Dollar Store cards.   ;)

+1 for KPopFever605

Excellent communication, quick payment, and smooth transaction.
Was that supposed to be for Fes or did you just give yourself a pat on the back?   ;D

These are some of the things I really love to see.
As a card collector, it's not ALL about playing cards to me. It's not only the art or the new or original concepts. It's the history, the story they tell and the places and times that these items bring to mind.  It's the unusual, the absurd, the nuance.  It's owning my own ecclectic piece of a place, a time or an idea.
My collection is my mausoleum.  I could never break it down or categorize it into one aspect. Its the entirety of it that makes it all special to me.  I am well aware that it makes me a hoarder of some sort but to me that is no dirty word. I hoard these just as I would hoard knowledge.  I gain something from it.
Thank you for sharing.  You have some really nice pieces there.

Wrong forum I think?

Not really a new deck, sorry.
It's playing card related so I can see how it fits.

The Conversation Parlor / Re: Deck Ranking System (top 100)
« on: February 02, 2015, 12:08:44 PM »
This sounds like a good idea, how about doing a top 10 decks for say 10 different categories instead of top 100 decks of all sorts?

This actually sounds feasible.  How about a top 20 from four main categories?  Cardistry, Magic, Modern Collectable and Vintage Collectable?   PCF could actually put it to a vote much like the awards to get a consesus.  It would not be the end all, be all of the playing card world but may in fact be enlightening to many, including those who are new to collecting, cardistry and magic and would like to see what decks are sought after by the community.
Unlike the yearly awards, allow people to "nominate" as many decks as they like in that particular category (up to 20) in a single post then tally up the duplicate nominations and create your list from there.  In the event of ties, put it up to a vote.
I am aware this might be a little bit of an endeavor but I would like to see it come to fruition.  I would volunteer my time and very limited skill set to the process.   :)

You'd need better categorization than that.  The first three categories have a huge amount of overlap with each other.  The fourth category isn't as easily defined - and becomes a MASSIVE category unless you also throw in a category for antique, and even then it's still a massive undertaking.

"A little bit of an endeavor?"  Try a massive whopper!  It was probably easier to decode the human genome!

If you were to attempt this, I'd say leave out categories like that altogether.  Pick specific deck features to be ranked and use them to come up with a total score.
A fifth category would probably be needed to seperate the antique and vintage decks. You are correct about that.
As for the overlap, I think that would be fine to have some of the same decks in multiple categories. The whole point would be to create an overall list compiled by the members of this board for the members both current and future of this board.
It would be only as much work as it would take to set it up and tally the results. The forum members would decide.  PCF's Top 100 as chosen by the forum.  (not to belittle how much time and effort that would entail)

I'm thinking of passing on this one...just not too into it.  What are your thoughts on this deck?
Much the same as yours I'm guessing.  The backs are so busy and the cards have an almost cut and paste, postage stamp kind of feel.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Saturn Playing Cards
« on: February 01, 2015, 09:14:39 AM »
This entire project to me is completely ridiculous.  It's incredibly simplistic.

The security window - and the color choice - has to do with making this look like a hybrid between custom deck and just another faux casino deck.  He actually calls the color "Dunes blue", as in this shade was used in a genuine Dunes casino deck.  Beyond a few exceptionally simple, basic choices, all he's done is strip away some detail from a EPCC standard face - which is itself modified from an old USPC face of roughly a hundred years ago (which is what I think it throwing Fes off when he looks at it - it did the same to me the first time I encountered it).  Change everything blue into "Dunes blue," make a few concentric circles into a logo and call it a day as you crack open your first beer of the afternoon.

With my feeble skills in Adobe, I could have taken the original files from EPCC, tweaked them to come up with this "design" and had the entire thing done in a few hours while watching TV and checking emails.

Is the design terrible?  Absolutely not.  Is it insanely simple, requiring little talent or skill to create?  Most definitely.

The part that kills me the most is that the blasted things already nearly 80% funded and sells for $12 a pack, with a limited run of 1,000.  This is NOT what I got into collecting playing cards for.  They're barely any different from any other deck I can buy at the corner store, the sole distinction being that they're made to Expert's level of quality.  It barely adds up to a hard hour's work, never mind a whole day.  Fulfillment is the biggest issue he'll have to deal with, and at his prices, even that can be handed off to another company.

It seems that some people are just not terribly discriminating when it comes to the cards they want to buy.  They could buy a pack of NOCs for less than half this price, and they look very nearly the same.  In fact, perhaps if Alex limited the print runs on the NOC to 500 packs and charged twice as much as this guy, he'd be rolling in dough - although the entire point behind a simple, inexpensive deck would be all shot to hell.  An expression about fools and their money comes to mind...
Very well said.  Couldn't agree more.

I stumbled upon these at a garage sale not too long ago. They were not sealed but in like new condition. Never having been shuffled and best of all I got them for a dollar.
I would love to have a sealed set too but my wife might have my head for it. She's ok with me buying most decks to add to my collection but not too fond of me purchasing duplicates which I have done three times in the last month so I think I probably shouldn't press my luck and quit while I'm ahead or while I still have one at least.  :)

Hey guys,

Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. So here's a progress update!

I've been working on promotional photography for the Lumberjacks, getting prototype cards printed and looking for a cardist near my area for the video. That last one was a real challenge.

The good news is all three things are done!

Here's a preview of the photos (please keep in mind that these are mocks that I made using my in house printer):

Must be one hell of an in house printer.  All of it looks really good to me.  :bosswalk:

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Interference - Playing Cards by James Haney

I really like the back design. It's stimulating to eyes, yes, but not so overly done that it's going to burn out your retinas.  The custom courts being melded into the pips gives them an almost semi-transformational feel.  Granted some need some major retooling  (mostly the spades) but some are done quite well.   The whole deck has a crisp and clean feel to it.  Probably because of the smaller sized courts and the amount of white space around them. But overall I think it all comes together very well.

What I want to know is what game they are playing.  I do not recognize the card configuration from any I have ever played.  Unless its a drinking game, then maybe I have played it but apparantely I lost because I was too smashed to remember playing..., or would that mean that I won?  Matter of perspective I guess.

The title didn't give you a clue?  "Friendly game of golf?"

In my defense, I just woke up.  Plus Im still not sure if that is a drinking game or not.  Never heard of it.   ???

These I could see being picked up by major retail outlets.  I could see these being sold by the thousands through wal-mart or target stores.  Not to offend anyone, that was just the first thought that popped in my head...

I agree with you 100%, quite the compliment to the deck creator in my opinion. If, for whatever reason, these don't fund. I hope USPCC makes a play to buy the design from Eric and produces them on their lovely web press. These are charming in a way that would go over quite well in mass market.
Well you never know these days.  Most people take the word Walmart as an insult anymore.   :o
