Design & Development / Ripley's Believe it or Not Playing Cards
« on: March 03, 2018, 12:44:31 PM »
I work at Ripley's Believe it or Not in Branson, MO and during the off season it was really slow so I decided to design a deck of playing cards centered around the museum. I do not plan to sell these cards as this project was for fun/practice but I would appreciate critiques as if I was selling them so i can get better :) I only really focused on the Jokers, Ace of Spades, and the court cards.

Here's the pictures! Thanks in advance!

I almost forgot. Here is a list of what each court card is.
KC- Robert Wadlow (Tallest Man in the World)
KH- J.T. Saylors AKA "Rubber Face"
KS- Robert Ripley
KD- Jo Jo the Dog Faced Man

QC- Dislocating Eyeballs
QH- Rose Siggins (Born without legs)
QS- Maria Jose Cristerna AKA "The Vampire Woman"
QD- Padaung Woman

JC- Erik "The Lizard Man" Sprague
JH- Longest Nose in History
JS- Weng AKA the Human Unicorn
JD- Fattest Man

AS- Two Headed Calf (Polycephaly)
Jokers- Tsantsa AKA Shrunken Head

Awesome! Thank you so much! I will let my parents know (they gave me the gift). They will be very happy to hear that these are legit!

Thank you! I will post some pictures later today. I tried posting through the forum but it isn't working so I will need to use another site.

The most likely reason for the problem you were having is file size.  We have a cap of 1000 Kb per photo, 5 photos per post.  It's one of the things we'll be reviewing when we look to upgrading/modernizing the site.

I did post some links to the pictures that same day. Did the post go through?

I got a deck of Steamboat 999s for Christmas that are supposedly from World War II. They even come with a war bond ad card and they even have a double sided blank card. I would love to find out if these are legit but all my Google searches have led me no where and I don't know how to research these. Is there anyone that can help me out? There is a serial number under the Ace of Spades that reads either G1101 or GI101 I'm not sure which.

I have been playing around with the idea of adding mazes to the spot cards and I have come up with something that I really like. What does everyone else think? I spotted a flaw in the club suit and I will fix that tonight after work.

The idea itself is an interesting one, but it doesn't make for a terribly attractive deck of cards.

If you want more realistic, then go for more realistic - make new court images that look more like real people holding real weapons.  The weapons alone would appeal mostly just to weapon enthusiasts.  They're not visually interesting enough by themselves, being barely more than having an overly-detailed pip in place of the court character.  When I think "King," I think of the man, I think of the crown, I think of the robes - the sword or axe he's carrying isn't in the forefront of my mind.

Some of my favorite decks of all time have court characters that look REAL, and don't look geriatric - like what one would imagine a modern royal family member would look like.  Try that as a concept instead.
Thank you for your thoughts Don! I am very attached to this idea so if you have any advice on the artwork or design that I already have laid out I would love to hear it! The point is for the items to represent the character's and their social classes. Thank you!

Maybe it's just me, but I am not used to seeing just the weapon on the court cards.. Something is missing ???
What do you mean? The whole point of the idea was to focus solely on the things in the hands of the court cards. I'd love to hear your concern but I'm not sure if I understand.

Design & Development / Court cards, shifting focus

So I had this idea the other day and I just had to try it out. Instead of the focus of the court cards being the kings queens and Jacks themselves, what if I shifted the focus to their weapons and accessories? I wanted a more realistic feel than the original artwork. I don't have a back design yet, or really anything else. I went ahead and completed a draft of the four kings. I wanted opinions and advice before pursuing this idea more completely. What do we think?

Sorry, I have been away from the computer for a while. We haven't made our invitations yet (kinda off to a slow start) but I like the idea of incorporating some of the design elements. Im not too attached to this design so I am open for changes. I would like to make it more manly. I will give the third color thing a go and report back!

Thanks for the advice. I only choose pink and gold because those are the wedding colors. I was wanting more of a two way design other than a photo. I am having trouble with filling space without making the design cluttered and I would like to improve on that. Any other design advice you can think to give that I can make improvements on?

I am getting married this year in Oct. and I thought it would be cool to design a deck of cards to go along with the colors and feel of our wedding. I plan to get these printed as the gifts I give my groomsmen, I want to give them one deck in a bottle, and one without the bottle. I have only started designing the back so far and I wanted some critiques concerning what I have so far. I am very new to this and I am still learning.

Magical Cardistry Bonanza / T shirts for magicians! Reserve yours now!

Hey everyone! I just launched my storefront on teespring! Each campaign lasts 7 days from now, the tee shirts will only be shipped if at least three shirts are ordered from each. If that goal is not reached, you will not be charged and no shirts will be shipped. I would appreciate if you would just check it out and at least share with friends if you are unable to purchase! If this goes well I will be putting more designs up in the near future. Thanks everyone!

Thank you so much for the advice. I like the idea of setting a small goal and a stretch goal! As for the spot cards, I just have them as standard spot cards.

Hey guys! My name is Josh and I am new to the forums. An instagram follower told me that I needed to check out this forum and get some feedback on the deck I have been designing! I plan on launching a Kickstarter hopefully in February.

Here is the LOST Deck! Any comments or suggestions?
