A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: Aviator (Ace of Spades) change?
« on: November 04, 2018, 01:41:36 AM »
Was wondering if anyone knew  when Aviators change the ace of spades from generic to the modern ones?

thanks!
 AC

You'd have to be a little more specific...there's been more than two Aces of Spades, from what I know of it.

When the deck first came out, it was to commemorate Lindbergh's crossing of the Atlantic - the deck's entire packaging and unique features were themed to this, complete with an image of the Spirit of St. Louis on the tuck box.  I'm pretty sure that the AoS and jokers followed this theme, perhaps even the card backs.

At some point later, the deck was re-themed to the modern "jet" age, with a jet aircraft on the tuck and similarly themed AoS and jokers.  I'm guessing that change took place around the 1960s or so, as the new design elements do look typical of that era.  The backs are about as exciting to look at as dirty dishwater, however, having nothing whatsoever to do with the theme - it's just a bunch of small, simple geometric shapes in an orderly if rather boring pattern.  That's what the deck still looks like to this day.

But wait!  There's more!  Aviators were also sold in a bridge-sized deck, now discontinued.  The bridge deck used to use a generic-looking AoS and generic jokers - there was nothing on the cards themselves to indicate specifically that they were Aviators, and the back design, while similar to what was in use for modern Aviators at the time, isn't quite the same.

Do bear in mind that my knowledge of old Aviators, pre Jet-Age update, is scanty at best, though I do know the deck was a Lindbergh commemorative and I'm pretty sure had a prop-plane rather than a jet plane.  There's an homage deck to the original that Dan and Dave Buck released maybe two or three years ago - not an exact copy by any stretch of the imagination, but probably similar in some ways, certainly in that it was made a Lindbergh commemorative deck again.  I own this D&D deck, the modern standard and the bridge deck.  My bridge deck was I think from either the 1970s or the 1980s - I'm not sure how long it's been out of print, but it's been a good while.  Today, USPC makes it only in standard (poker) sizes, with standard indices, jumbo indices and as a pinochle deck, all of which are still for sale on their own website.

Thanks for the great info,  I attached a pic, I notice many aviators has this generic ace of spades. wondering when they made the permanent switch.  I also have a old bridge deck before the jetplane tuck with the same ace of spades.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Collect for Fun? Or Profit?
« on: December 21, 2016, 10:07:29 PM »
I am new to collecting, Have been collecting for almost a year.
I spend alot of  money,  got great deals, however I do feel guilty about spending so much money, Now looking back, because of that reason, sometimes I regret starting this hobby, afterall it was hobby discovered practically on accident.

I collect for fun,, never intended to sell, or make money. I originally planned on buying 1 deck to keep seal, and 1 to open, but then it got really difficult to open a seal deck that sells at premium.   And decks at release are getting more and more expensive.

I think I have over 550 unique decks and maybe over 1300  in total decks, lost count,
now I find myself now purging alot of my duplicates,  trading or selling.

Even if i get good returns on one deck, There is another that would sell below cost,
It really is just to make a little money, or just get my money back after all the selling/shipping costs.

It's really really difficult  to have a consistent income from buying and selling decks of cards.
I see myself more as selling to buy some other decks later, or buying a bundle, then make my money back, and hoping to cover a few decks for personal collection (less guilt).

Atleast now I ended my search on pre-2016 decks, now I can just get new releases,
Instead of hunting.

Wow, you dove into the hobby head-first, didn't you?  :))  I've been at it since the end of 2010 and I have maybe 50% more than you do.

Chasing the older decks can be fun, but it can also be costly.  It's not a bad thing to do, if you really target your searches and find some good deals - they're out there if you look.  Sometimes, you'll even run into collectors interested in acquiring some of your "trading fodder" (duplicate decks you're looking to sell) in exchange for the older stuff you would like but otherwise might not be able to readily afford.

I decided if I was going to be serious about it, Might as well go All-In , Though first 3 Months, I did not get any Older Kickstarter Decks (Expensive),  I used to think anything above 12$ is just too much for a deck of cards, *Now its a Norm, even before 3rd Party Market*

So I Just kinda got USPCC standards, maybe few early Ellusionist and T11 flagship decks.
Then I Just Dove in,  I figure It will just be harder and harder to hunt decks I would eventually would wanna get anyways, and more expensive. Also have found some good deals from people who were shedding duplicates, and just found good luck.
I feel if I started in 2017 as oppose to 2016,  It would be impossible to get to where I am now. As some decks seem to have just vanish from circulation.

A Cellar of Fine Vintages / Re: casino classic
« on: December 21, 2016, 12:44:10 PM »
just had an inquiry for the good people of the forum.
I have a sealed new Wynn casino deck in the blue colour (image attached) and have noticed something pretty strange about the deck.
there is a card in the back which can be viewed through a window in the box, this card has a date stamped on it, usually the date is right-way up i.e. it can be read holding the deck with the seal to the sky. On this particular deck however, the date is stamped upside-down and from what i can gather this is quite rare.
I just wanted to know whether anyone has run into this before and whether this adds value to the deck.
additionally I would like to know what i could expect this deck to sell for.

Thanks

One of Brown ones is like that,
I dont think its worth any more or less.
But dont know

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Lost a card. What to do?
« on: December 17, 2016, 11:41:40 PM »
Mmm,

Atleast its not expensive, maybe just use that deck to practice cardistry,
Or use a joker to replace a card. Marking it as the card you lost.

Anyways, thats what i would do.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Ellusionist Clearance
« on: December 17, 2016, 12:28:28 PM »

I suppose that makes sense then, before 2016. I may have bought  5decks in my lifetime.
So once every 6 years on avg.

As for  Ellusionist, I wonder if it is that difficult for them to have balance, as to knowing their market. I feel like they target people who willing to pay at  any price, and once thats over, they give it away.  instead of maybe pricing it at lower price and able to sell more,  just seems better for buisness.
But oh well.

1 deck every 18 months? :o

Well then we collectors must be at the top of their list of "VIPs"

I am not sure how the math works on this, and what constitutes as  "customer of theirs"
I buy a Slurpee every maybe once a year,   I do not consider myself a Slurpee customer.

I think all companies need and have various strategies to move product and one of them is "buy $XXX amount and we'll give you this super special deck that's not available any where else!". In many ways, a lot of them have to kept to that method. Sometimes they run other promotions where you can randomly get that deck for a lot lower, like a lottery (ie. D&D Mystery decks).

I think you're describe two different problem, cere23.

The problem with E is that they're seem to be devaluing their product by intentionally selling their stuff super low half a year later or a year later, at least with some of their product as they've used a bunch of different sales strategy. They use to be quite found of the buy a brick and get a super rare LE re-colour you can't buy.

While other companies are just found more ways to give away their deck, but it's still effective free as you never paid for it except for some that put it up for a high price, but then I don't think they've ever intentionally devalued it as collectors gave it that specific price.

I think the problem is that E's marketing has always been a bit "wonky" to put it nicely while everyone else doesn't seem to go that far, at least in my memory. E will regularly go "look what we found in the vault! We'll never find some more again! Get it now!!". But ultimately a company has to do what a company has to do to make money and keep on thriving. And sometimes it is the honest truth that a company has found stuff that's misplaced and no one remembered anymore 'cause that staff member might be gone.

I think the question to ask why are you collecting? Is it to have super high value decks? If that's the case, I think modern might not be the best thing as price will fluctuate for that in many more years to come and maybe vintage or antique deck is the way to go with more certainty of value upon return or at least steady value. If it's collecting for cool things, maybe wait it out for a cheaper means to get that deck (ie. lower prices or even trade someone else who might have extras).

A luxury hobby shouldn't be pissing you off 'cause there's a lot of better ways to spend that money. I think you want companies to play by your rules and ultimately, they will play by whatever rules works for them.

I do not disagree with what you have said
im not really pissed off, or am generally pissed off at manipulative marketing .

My first post in this thread was more about examples of perception of rarity with its swings like you mentioned,

I collect because I like playing cards , I only been collecting for 11 months,
i didnt have my first kickstarter deck till 4 months into it. i just collected regular Bikes, bees,
Cheapest of the cheap.  if I dont like it. i'll skip it. No matter the value.
My favorites is still the standard bees and bikes,

My ideals are same for most companies, not exclusive to playing cards"
,is  just be honest, and not to be so manipulative, which is rare these days.

I have no qualms about Spend x amount of money to get a get rare deck
I have no qaulms charging x amount.
I do find it slightly slap in the face if they sell something for 100$ Uncut sheet advertising it as rare,
Then sell it for 15$  weeks later. i beleve it just upsets the customers. Even though i took advantage of the lower prices. I am just trying to put myself in those buyer's shoes.

my rant is more of a preference, we all have preferences. I never boycotted any card company
If i were to boycott  Ellusionist , it be more so due to customer support.

I have no rules for companies to play by, If a company rule is to lie to get the most profit,
i dont have to happy about that,   im not pointing any fingers with that comment at all , to be clear.

Really, I didnt think it was angry post, sorry if i came out like that.
I enjoy most all the card companies to some extent.
One of my faves being penguinmagic, just because I like their vibe.

With that being said, Ellusionist is giving away 1 Million dollars,
I hope they legitmently do so, just because they said they will.

More access with lower price per deck and people complain?  :mindf-ck:

Thought I would chime in here, I should probably keep my mouth shut though haha. If we've said it once, we've said it a hundred times. There is no such thing as a rare modern playing card. Chase decks aren't limited or rare or special in any other way than being, Chase decks. They're for FUN. It's a great time getting a chase deck in your hands for the first time. If a company decides after years of slow rolling said chase deck to lift the gates for a moment and give access to them, well that's a beautiful thing. Instead of one or two of that chase deck, you can have more with ease! If you already have the chase deck, well you had the pleasure of the chase and the reward, now you get the pleasure of more on the cheap. If it's someone who hasn't had access to the chase deck for whatever reason, they can get in on that and enjoy the deck as well. The company gets to unload a portion of it's years old deck stock, making room for some other things. Those other things will be coming around the corner and maybe it will be a new chase deck. Something for more fun as they attempt to mix it up a bit.

Personally, I'm not one for getting bent out of shape over a chase deck. No matter the chase deck and I do have a lot of them myself. I get more bent out of shape when a deck costs $10 instead of $6, if I buy a brick I'm not getting a deal I used to get. Rather I'm paying what they should be sold for to begin with. (Talking to the big bois out there who  usually put out the chase decks.) Griping about that is pointless though, kickstarter shifted things. Accepted it and moved on.

Collecting playing cards is going to forever be a Luxury Hobby. I think it's a great hobby and I have a fondness for some decks that outweighs my fondness for my cat. It's still a Luxury Hobby. Kind of have to accept that aspect of collecting playing cards, especially when it comes to chase decks.

I do not disagree with you.
I like price per deck to be low.,  and I don't even like the idea of Chase Decks.

My main issue, like anything else, and not limited to playing cards,  is Slight to Heavy Manipulative Advertising.

Companies advertise like it will never be available again, "Get it NOW, before too late". "Only 1000 will ever be on sale,"
Then go figure, eventually it goes on sale again,  sometimes 80% discount,  I believe it will make people feel like a suckers,
(ie like the local collector I knew)
The same People that invest in that said company those most.

Moreover, I dislike of Producers controlling the supply, I know it's there right, just like there right to charge 22$ for a kick starter deck,  I don't hold anything against that, but I guess I like the idea of , Just releasing everything that was intended to be sold, and when it sells out,  it sells out.

I swear E has a habit of things like this,
i talked to one my local collectors 8 months ago,

He was upset that he bought some supposed to be super limited uncuts for like 100,  later found out they were giving it away with order or selling it for 15$ Less than a month later.
Almost, like punishing the ones who are most supportive,

Its like omg 5000 , so limited,, now it seems 2500 is not limited at all
Maybe we just dont have enough collectors.

Dan and Dave   I remember smoke and mirror private reserve was going for like 200$, now its like 40$ and was 52$ on D&D recently before giving them away in mystery decks.

Game of Death Rare Yellow, was like 40$ At one time,  i think I saw on art of play on black friday for like 10$

Now DTS limited of initial 1000 for sale, I imagine it to be 2500 print run, maybe more
Now just got a email. They are releasing another 200 just for me,(i feel special), and consider it a reserve.

now the NEW D&D private reserve have a print run of 2500 atleast
But they are not selling,

Who knows how many  T11 gold monarchs there are.

Its like a cartel.  Control the supply,   Speaking of that , anyone willing to some Jerry nuggets?

Apologies for the rant

I called bicycle,  they said the streamlines were made in china upon examining.
She also said  that was the newest as they go through inventory quick. Ah well.

What are smooth bicycles, ? Like rider back smooth?

Thanks

First of all, you didn't call "Bicycle."  It's like inquiring about a Ford Mustang by calling Mustang.  You called bicyclecards.com, I presume, which is Wingra Direct, a retailer and wholly-owned subsidiary of USPC.  They handle USPC's sales.

The Bicycle E-Z-See Lo-Vision decks are made with a smooth finish - unembossed.  This was sometimes referred to as an "Ivory Finish" in some older deck designs, but the last Bicycle deck I know of that used the term was CARC's Bicycle Professionals.  They have Rider Backs and giant faces with two- and four-color design elements made for easier play by people with less-than-perfect eyesight.

I'd be surprised if USPC went back to a Chinese company to make Streamlines - they did a trial run with some lesser brands a few years back but found the quality to be inferior and unacceptable.  But then again, as of earlier this year they do have new corporate ownership - Jarden was purchased by Newell Brands - so the new corporate overlords could be making them pinch the pennies a little harder than before.  I really couldn't say, to be honest.

your right,
i kinda generalized it by saying Bicycle.
Anyways,  surprised that they told me to Contact Merz67.

My apologies Don,
I think it could be a unconscious thing, I knew your name was Don too,

I have some 2009 Decks says made in china.

I am thinking about ordering from bicycle.com for some Streamlines, if made in the US
It doesn't say where its made, and also it is Cheaper than Mavericks.

I think you meant bicyclecards.com - bicycle.com is a generic-looking site about two-wheeled bicycles...

USPC's own website sells Mavericks at $2.99 a pack - it's a ripoff, considering that dollar stores have them for $1 a pack.

They also list Streamlines at $1.99 a pack - this is about par for the course and are better cards than Mavericks, assuming you get US-made decks.  I have seen them as low as a buck a pack at Walmart and they are nearly that cheap when bought in bulk, but unless you talk to the retailer and get details, you never know if you're getting old stock made in China or more recent stock made in the USA.  I made a bulk purchase of about 1.5 gross or 2 gross a while back and wound up with all Chinese-made decks.  Can't weave shuffle them to save your own life...  US-made decks are on par with Aviators or smooth-finish Bicycles.

Both brands have Arrco faces and were originally Arrco-made brands, if memory serves me.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: Collect for Fun? Or Profit?
« on: November 15, 2016, 01:29:06 AM »

I know these are the cheaper modern version studs, they were next to the PlayRights.
but I bought a pack of these for 2.99 p/tax at Walgreens Today.

Weird thing was  there was no seal. and no sticky residue that shows sign that someone peal the seal off.
and returned it. Cards feel new and in NDO.

Just sharing a unexpected find.

You lucked out.  They've been out of print a little while now - the Play-Rights replaced them.

It was actually a frequent occurrence to find Studs with loose or missing deck seals.  They weren't sealed in cellophane, so the glue would dry out with exposure, the moisture would escape because there was no wrapper of cellophane keeping it from escaping so therefore, the seals would often come loose, detach at one end or fall off completely to land at the bottom of the cards display rack.  The plastic hang tags sometimes came off as well but they did tend to last longer than the USPC deck seal stickers.

Just found a blue verson with a blue seal at a different Walgreen by restaurant we were eating at yesterday.
"thinking Walgreens have messy back rooms."

Thank you don

it sounds like they start using different tuck ,
Maybe cost savings.
i notice when those started reviewing the decks prolly bought them when they were just releaed, and the tucks seems to majority the lighter color one,

the newer D&D green aristocrat mimics the color of the darker version,

If I'm not mistaken, the green Aristocrats were specially-ordered as a private print run for Magic Apple and Dan and Dave rather than being produced by USPC themselves.  A MAJOR difference between the older decks and the new ones is that the unique Aristocrat stock is no longer being produced by USPC - the new ones are one Bicycle stock.  It's not a bad stock, really - but it's not Aristocrat stock.  Aristocrat had a certain thickness and softness to it that Bicycle stock doesn't have.

Too bad,  Aristo Stock may be best ever

Playing Card Plethora / Difference between 2011 Aristocrats (2 Versions?)

yea i believe I got a clunker,
i dont know how a "sealed" pack even placed in somewhat bad conditions would cause this.
i have placed a pack of cards in the bathroom, where hot showers takes place, without a tuck,
yea it gets very clumpy, soft, and deforms, but Still fans better.
but then when it dries,  its  Starts to  fanning nicely.

Basically if I pressed the card between 2 fingers, it tends to stick on one finger much longer time than usual,
it just feels like the coat is lacking or stickier.

25
My bad,  , i ment coat, not finish,   there doesnt seem much coating, surface feels rougher, grittier, thus stickier
Even if i abuse bikes, surface area feels smooth even if they no longer fan

The decks was out of the box like that.

i remember angelback squeezers, hertiage v1 series, was similar
