Thanks for highlighting that many of the decks have been published in several different variations; you're absolutely right that numerous ones exist for each - this would have been a good point to have mentioned in my final conclusions.  In this feature article I wanted to give a broader overview of the main decks Lotrek has produced since he started with his first deck for RSVP Magic in 2011, so I just covered the main points about each deck, to give an overall perspective of his range.

My own recent experience has been primarily with the Sanctus deck.  Because these decks aren't cheap, covering every single version of each different deck that has been published would require a separate article and more research to ensure accuracy - plus a larger bank account.  But if you or anyone else wants to send me a copy of each different Lotrek deck, I will be more than happy to do a write-up like that! [chuckle]

I know I only wrote two words complementing your review, but I enjoyed reading it and my "recommendations" are more like seeing a nice Porsche and saying it could have been a better car if it had an AC electrical plug inside or something. Just thought I'd clarify.

So, regarding the Lotrek decks, I only know the story of the Liturgy and the Grotesk Inferno era decks so I couldn't tell you myself, but here is a complete list of his decks as far as I'm aware, modified from a fellow users list. You'd have to speak to Lotrek and other more knowledgeable collectors to know the story behind these.

As cool as that AoS is, I'm trying to imagine how you'd incorporate Edison into it in a similar fashion... Will Edison be naked and draped in a partially revealing cloth?  :-\

Great review.

I've only been around for the more recent Lotrek decks, but one thing your review could use is elaboration on all of the crazy variations of Icons. There's at least 6 of them (Regular, Demo, Trial, Reversed, Signature, Sacred, etc...) and it would be great to know the history of why each one exists.

For example, the Liturgy decks had a history which explains why there are 5 versions of that: there was a special bronze stock for which he made Red, Green and Treasure, the red and green ones were misaligned , so he reprinted them on a different stock. Therefore there are 5 total:  treasure (bronze stock), red (bronze stock but misaligned), red (regular stock), green (bronze stock but misaligned), green (regular stock).

Very thorough response, I learned like 10 new things reading it, so thank you in advance. Forewarning about my own response here, my knowledge is obviously very limited, so I can only provide reactionary thoughts.

Regarding the custom deck performances, everything you said makes sense, I also imagine that a lot of cardistry moves are and can be used effectively in a routine for the "googly-eyed" misdirection. In conjunction with a fancy custom deck, especially with standard faces, it's the perfect distraction. It would be like watching cirque du soleil magic show. You'd have no idea how any of it is being done, but it looks beautiful and still mystifies you. I love it, and I hope magicians one day soon feel comfortable enough to use them on TV. Like I don't think I've seen anyone on Fool Us for example using anything besides a standard rider back-looking deck.

As far as markings go, I assumed if I had looked at enough of all the custom decks I've been buying I'd see in the range of 20-40% of them as marked. But it sounds like you're saying it's much lower, maybe single digits. That's good to know, because I honestly prefer that the decks are not marked. Primarily because if I were to use the custom decks it mostly likely would be to play poker and not to actually perform a trick.

All of your pieces about the markings are very illuminating for me, like I had never even heard of the RFID chips inside a card method of marking, I didn't realize that RFID could be made thin enough to even be put into a card without it being noticeable. Also thank you for the lesson on the riffle technique for identifying the marks, it's now in my arsenal.

You should definitely consider making a sticky or something for some of us rookies outlining exactly what you said here, because every paragraph breaks down the topic incredibly well. Thank you kindly for taking the time to write it.

Thank you for the welcomes, I'm glad to be here.

Don, thank you for all the advice and your thoughts, very much appreciated. The "plan" I have in my head is, 'wait until you're good enough to avoid destroying the decks before you open and play with decks worth more than $5'. Which, is a good plan theoretically, but that day when I'm "good enough" will keep getting pushed further away. I mean, I destroyed a few standards before I was good enough with the Faro to NOT obliterate the edges of a deck, so in that sense it was smart. But on the other hand, now I'm waiting until I'm good enough with the Lepaul spread not to leave an asymmetric bend in the cards (if that's even possible). Sooo it's an ongoing quest.

For the time being, yes I'm one of those people who spends my cash on pleasing looking decks and complete sets. I even buy decks I know I never want to open, like the current Titans Kickstarter deck for example. I very much dislike the faces of the cards, but I love the backs and I love the tuck boxes. So I burned $52 on that set of all three.

As for your comment on performances using common vs custom decks, I never planned to perform anything in front of others so I never thought about that. But what you're saying makes absolute sense, seeing something common puts people at ease oddly. I guess I hope that one day custom decks will start becoming common enough in magic performances that people stop relating it to trickery by association. That way we get to see some deck diversity.

On that note, what percentage of custom decks right now do you think are marked? I never open decks enough to find out, but I do know there are a number of them which are definitely marked. Like, I'm pretty sure all (most?) of the Madison decks are marked. So I'm sure other decks do it too, but I don't really have a good idea of how many.

Introduce Yourself / Beginner collector here, just saying hello

Hello everyone, my name is Hagop, I'm from Southern California, USA.

I'm new to the forums and new to collecting playing cards.

I've been a part time collector of lots of different things over the years. Tools, knives, posters, coins, cards, pretty much everything.
I recently got into collecting decks because of the crazy explosion of artists working in this area on some amazing looking pieces and I wanted in!

Most of my pieces tend to be "safe-queens" so I don't open maybe 98% of the decks I buy, even the extras I buy convincing myself I'll open and play with for once, I never do. Maybe that speaks to my ocd, but that's my thing. Any time I want to learn some basic cardistry move, I'll usually use a more standard bicycle deck.

Anyway, I'll probably explore the forum in due time, but in the mean time, anything I should know about this place? Popular threads/subforums? Any etiquette besides the basics I should familiarize myself with?
