Congrats on keeping on. I would say that your new design is nothing like the original so if I was to bet, you're likely to face a similar battle but in the opposite direction. Ie some may think it too minimal.

To answer your question though, I think I like the purple version the best of these with green a close second.

I'd think folks would expect the pip and court cards to also have a similar minimalist feel to them.

Have you tried working on pulling back a bit on the original so it still has a similar feel but with a little less going on?

Good luck!

Playing Card Plethora / Flex Deck Playing Cards V2 "The Next Leg"
« on: April 08, 2020, 08:01:08 AM »
Hi All,

A couple of years ago we were preparing for a hike into the Grand Canyon and wanted to take multiple games with us. To save weight and space in our bags we came up with the idea for a deck that combines them all in one. Based on feedback here and other sites, we learned that the back and box could and should be improved.

So, last fall we commissioned renowned playing card designer Valentina Badeanu to re-imagine our box and card back design. We also designed a new red/black version for fans of euchre and other similar games.

Now available on our website flexdeckplayingcards.com, we are fulfilling orders stateside on a daily basis. We hope you enjoy.

Any questions or feedback welcome!

Hi There - Here's a resource I think does what you're hoping for....https://www.cardistrytouch.com/cardfans/....It may not output exactly as you hoped but it will show you what the cards looked fanned in different ways.

Good luck with your project!

Go to an Apple Store and try the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil 2 before deciding.  The feel of this combo is the closest to pencil on paper available by far.  I've tried other combos of tablet and stylus and everything else feels like you are drawing on glass with a pen to varying degrees, versus the natural feel of the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil 2.  The slight distance between the surface of the glass and the actual display surface is noticeable on other tablets, including the regular iPad, especially when viewing at an angle.  With the iPad Pro there is no discernible distance, you don't see the 'glass'.

Adobe just came out with Photoshop for iPad OS and they have announced that Adobe Illustrator for iPad OS will be available next year.  This makes the iPad Pro much more of a professional choice.  There are some very good Photoshop and Illustrator alternatives available for the iPad also that are powerful and much cheaper than Adobe.  They all cost about what Adobe charges for just one month of their CC subscription.

You may want to wait before buying if you decide on this.  The iPad Pro line is due for new models early next year.  This may be important because the current iPad Pros have a limited amount of RAM, I think about 2 GB.  The next ones should have more RAM, and the Adobe apps and other graphics apps will want it.

Thank you so much! I will definitely go and check out the current model with the new model roll out in mind. Really appreciate the breakdown!

Best,

Here are two pages from a USPCC Catalog showing some of the backs you've already ID'd

....How does one get a hold of a USPCC catalog like this?! They're not readily for sale, right?

I like it. maybe shrink the center to give the indices a bit of space or minimize them more as well. good luck!

The queen and ace's take up more of the space from the black and I think are very nice. To me, the pip cards are busy with the individual picture frames for each. Perhaps you could batch the pips in a frame within the border frame so the black background is still there but a bit more white space in the middle?

Hi Andrzej,

Do you have any decks that are multi-purpose? I am trying to track down the fournier multi-card.

I currently have decks on display on my Facebook page and a couple of YouTube videos. Here’s “Jerry” that I picked up in Charlotte

And he is a very good boy, that Jerry. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much Don! I did try and mimic letter frequency to the vernacular with more common letters appearing more frequently. We do have 4 A's, E's but only 1 Z and Q, etc. I'll need to double check to make sure they are still on par with a 2019/20 vocabulary for future prints.

I had no idea about the list of words IP Hasbro is trying to secure! That sure seems like a stretch but I'd imagine they have a few lawyers who are flexible enough to try and make that claim.

I opted to place the harder to use letters on the higher index card's as a secondary scoring mechanism if needed. The A's, E's and etc are on the 2's and 3's while the Z, K and B are on the face card and aces. Individual scores on the letters really cluttered the layout and as you said, seemed risky considering IP concerns. I've never used another brand name to market the Flex Deck and will not in the future so I hope we can all play nice in this sandbox.

Do you know of any card games focused on letters that are in the common domain?

I like the floral border. The black backdrop dominates the visual for me.

Looking at the 10 of diamonds and a little confused why you use 2 suit index pips in the corners for that card but only 1 suit index pip for the aces.

Thanks so much Don!

I just placed my order for the dice deck on drivethrucards (not sure how long till they arrive). Always on the lookout for the other multi-purpose decks out there.

I hope to post some progress images on the design board soon for what we're thinking for the next versions of the Flex Deck will look like. Attached is our current design - if you have any feedback I'm always hoping we can improve.

Hi alrdenver82,

I'd love to find the forum you're describing if it exists. The best I could find are facebook groups related to individual card game games like bridge and ptich and groups for designers who mainly are not making variations of traditional deck indices. A sub-group of that are designers who get the word out about their games via 'print and play' groups where the card game makers provide players with a pdf that can be printed and played at home for free.

Design & Development / design tablet recommendations?
« on: October 10, 2019, 07:36:25 AM »
Good Morning All.

I currently design in Illustrator but am in need of a design tablet. The only thread I could find on the topic here was from 2011.

Does anyone have recommendations for design tablets on the market today? I used to have a wacom but gave it away before I fell into the card design path.

Thanks for any insight if possible!

Best,
Mike

Here is something I've been meaning to ask about.  Playing cards for Dominos.  Copyright 1908 by USPCC.  Two decks of double 9's in a leather case. I tried to picture a representative sample, it's just likea set of Dominos, but in playing card format...

Not much artwork as there are no court cards.  I tried to do some Internet research but never hit on the right keywords to yield much.  So, how often do you see something like this?  Any thoughts about the back?

Frankly, any information at all would be appreciated.

Hi Adam
Very nice set but probably not in the original case (yours looks like a nice old one, possibly period to the cards).

If memory serves me, USPC made two small domino sets; the first, the size of regular dominos, the second slightly larger. Both types came in a burgundy colored slipcase and both had red and white speckled backs. However your cards could possibly have been packaged in a tuckcase.

I do not recall seeing many of these over the years, we did own one set once but not in its original box.

Nice find - rare?  Maybe!!

Good Evening All.
I bought these domino cards by USPCC from 1906 a couple of years ago along with the two other tiny domino cards (only a few of each) but am unsure where the other's are from. Does anyone have any ideas?
Best,
Mike
