Well, it WAS about time for another Cthulhu deck, wasn't it?  ::)

Color scheme doesn't really work. Pass.

Madison is getting pretty close to Merz-status by now...

Looks like a very clean design, looking forward to seeing more of it!

Oooh - could this be related to the Encarded collaboration that was teased a while back...?

I don't think Paul would be referred to as a "Kings Wild artist".

...gorgeous, thick, great looking border...

These are oxymorons in my book, like "delicious green eggs" or "functional square wheels" :))

Bill Kalush, from CARC, has made all the contacts, done all the research, conducted experiments and slogged through the leg work to find and collaborate with the printers overseas, and is the conduit through which folks like me can print. He set up EPCC to be the channel through which people outside of CARC projects can utilize the resources he's put together.

If you work with Bill through EPCC do you have to sell through CARC?

He said earlier in the thread that he will sell them through his own website.

Hey Leif,  these are the original ornate borders, just a little thinner.  May just bump them up a fraction tho

Keep em thin!  ;)

I'm actually not a huge fan of the way EPCC decks handle. They're certainly not bad, but in general I think USPCC decks handle better (comparing custom USPCC decks to the Legends and Exquisites). Maybe I'm just more used to them, who knows. Either way I'm a huge fan of everything Encarded puts out so I can't wait for these.

Everyone is of course entitled to their opinion, but the difference between the Global Titans and Exquisite (for me) is massive. I'm not a magician personally, just a collector - but the latter felt absolutely amazing and I can see why it's getting rave reviews.

Looking forward to this Paul.

I have to agree with you, Paul. As a cardist the Exquisites outshine the Global Titans by quite a bit, even the Legends doesn't feel as "right" as the Exquisites do IMO.

Different people can guess the same card :)

How will you determine the winner?

Add ons are $13 for domestic orders? Is it just me or does that seem expensive? I thought printing a deck of cards would be cheaper with MPC.

It's actually more expensive. Depending on how many decks you order, it can be a dollar or more per deck higher. The trick is you can order a 100 decks instead of 2500.

It's how people can create a short-run deck on KS and have a goal of only $1,000 to $2,000.  Per-deck costs are higher, but the minimum quantity you can order is so low that it takes very little to cross the threshold and cover your costs.  Once you've hit that goal, the more orders you get, the lower the per-deck costs go - a boon if your project is exceedingly successful.

A boon for the creator, not the pledgers. Unless stretch goals add some freebies to make up for the lowered deck price.

This is pretty much a novelty deck by my standards. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with that, but I rarely buy novelty decks.

"Colorful"? There's really just 4 colors here, just in different shades. And that's only if you count black as a color  ::)

If I want this kind of "art" I'll just ask my printer to print out a test page...

Loved the Exquisites, love Encarded, love those courts.

I think you have a winner here, Paul :D

Love the court cards, apart from the amount of negative space, but the back and tuck are kinda meh to me.

I actually thought the two birds as the Jack was pretty inventive.  It's like how Dan and Dave appear as opposite heads of a king in some CARC decks.  Don't ask me which King, I can't recall, but I can say definitely that the KS is David Blaine and the KH is Bill Kalush.

That would be a better way to depict them, to have Hugin on one side and Munin on the other to make it more like a traditional court. I don't mind non-traditional, but it should be consistent. As they are now, they stick out a bit.

Thank you for all your replies, I think i will put my black scorpion deck aside and buy me two raider backs, two tally hos and a artisan deck :)

If you can find them, I highly recommend getting some Tally Ho's printed in Cincinatti, Ohio. All of USPCC's decks were MUCH better before the factory moved to Kentucky, and Tallys were the cream of the crop (without going too far back in time). The bottom of the box should say where they were printed, and in most cases red or blue seals also means OH (though there was an overlap in when the factory moved and when they switched to black seals.

I would agree that the early Erlanger stuff wasn't so great, but by this point they're actually producing better cards than Cincinnati did in its final months.  The only exception would be Bicycles because they switched to a lighter stock due to problems with the new printer, probably the web press.  The troublesome decks were made in late 2009 and most of 2010.  By 2011, they were making good-quality decks.

They have been improving, but I still don't think they've reached the best of the OH decks. And I don't think they ever will. It's hard to explain, it's more about the "feel" of the cards rather than the performance. Or maybe it's just in my head  :karrit:

And ruicorreia is right on the money regarding the fanning powder. I've used that technique several times, and it works like a charm even without using a dry cloth (though that's probably better). Only thing you can do wrong with that is using too much powder.

Introduce Yourself / Re: Hello From Bill Kalush
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:55:23 PM »
Bill,

before reading this intro post of yours I thought all of your decks came from the same ("secret") factory. I wrote a summary of my impressions on all the non-USPCC CARC decks under this assumption, so learning that they're not from the same factory changes things a bit. I understand that you want to keep the names and specific locations of these factories a trade secret, but maybe you could give them arbitrary names like Taiwan A etc and list which factory printed which decks? This would be a great way to let us enthusiasts compare your decks with a more informed view and allow us to see (and give you feedback on) which factory is doing well or improving.

Just a thought.

They already have "unofficial" names.  The Shanghai printer and the Taiwan printer.  To the best of my knowledge, the Global Titans came from the Shanghai printer.  The rest came from the Taiwan printer.  The Taiwan printer is also believed to be the same printer used by Misdirection's Mystery for their three decks.

Thanks for that, Don. I guess I didn't pay enough attention to have picked up the unofficial names. Do you know (or have an inkling) if the FatboyEatAllDay decks are printed by either of these factories as well?

Kinda sounds like the review is done by Data from Star Trek  ;D

Jokes aside, very solid review with all the necessary info and very little fluff. GJ!

I'm watching through all of QI (or as much of it as there is on youtube) and this part came up. I thought it was, as you might expect, quite interesting, so I thought I'd share.

It's not a very practical tuck design though, is it? The connection point of the flap/top will probably get worn pretty quickly from all the bending because you have to bend it really far back to get the whole deck out, even more so since it's angled downwards.

Somehow, I don't think he'll miss your pledge, since there will be enough people interested in seeing a better version of this to replace any lost funds from folks like you and then some.

You wouldn't think so judging by many of the comments in this thread. And don't forget that many people have a set quantity they buy decks in, which would effectively get halved when only one deck is offered instead of two.

Anyway, it doesn't matter since according to the last update it will relaunch with both decks right off the bat, with updated shipping and single deck pledge levels.

A good way to keep any deck in a condition as close to new as possible is to wash your hands every time before handling them, and whenever you feel like your hands get sweaty or oily within a session. This is particularly useful in hotter climates. Also try to limit the "contact time" of each card, so if you practice techniques that keep the deck in a dealer's grip do a cut every now and then to avoid the bottom card being in contact with your hand too much. In general, heat and moisture are bad for cards, so keep that in mind whenever handling a deck you want to keep in good shape.

Ah..yea, don't get it.
Is this going to be 26 card deck?
Doubles of each card?
Does the 6/10, 7/9, 8/8 cards make a straight?

Not practical even as a novelty.

For any given game you could achieve the same result by simply using 2 regular decks and double the amount of cards in play, e.g. for Hold'Em use 4 hole cards and 10 table cards.

25
That's kind of a big change this far into the campaign, but I guess they realized they had to do something to bump pledges. I'd rather have them in a Bicycle branded box than not at all.
