Thanks everyone, very happy to hear it!

Thank you Sher143!

Wow Mr. Carpenter it is an honor to have you say that. I have always loved your designs and admire your dedication in building Encarded. If you ever need some illustrations I would be thrilled to help!

Mr. Boyer  thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to share it. If it were not for your hard work in helping run Aether's the first dream would have never been imagined.

I agree on the four pips and making them identical. Thank you for the heads up. Here is a preview of them on the tens. Hearts look much better.

Yes they are. The spades, clubs and diamonds are the same. Back when they were created cards where hand drawn for each person who wanted a deck. As well several other current decks have this characteristic.

It's not that urgent to me.  Decks are like trains - there's always another one coming soon enough...

That's what I said about ex-wives.

[rimshot][/rimshot]

"...ladies and gentlemen, thanks and good night!  We're here 'til Thursday - try the brisket!"

Don't listen to Don folks. He will be gone tomorrow, he poisoned the brisket.

Crap I should have gotten the fish. Don I will sell you a deck at cost ($10) plus the antidote if you change your mind.

7
I just got my decks today. Love em, can't stop dancing!

Heads up to anyone familiar with theory 11's Sentinels will recognize the pips and layout, I just did a side by side comparison and the Fraggle deck has slightly smaller pips in a different color. I am assuming that (Sentinels artist) Hatch Design in San Francisco had a large hand in the project.

Don, check out ups's new service "UPS Innovations". They handle the package until its destination then transfer it over to usps for delivery. Not sure if this helps but I hope it does.

8
Mirciusx, yep the uncut comes with a deck too. It's a great deal, congrats! Thanks for the eBay pricing, happy to know its holding its value.

Heads up the box is not cellophaned only stamp sealed.

As I see it, in a world with over seven billion people living on it - that's 7,000,000,000; a lot of zeroes - the existence of anything in quantities of even a few tens of thousands is rare, never mind a few hundred.

Did they make ANY changes whatsoever to the uncut?  I'd think they'd at least update the copyright date to this year, since the deck was produced last year.  (Assuming there is a copyright date anywhere on it...)

I agree and from the collector standpoint I'm cool. Not planning on selling mine, its going straight to the wall. I'm happy that more people will have a chance to grab this uncut and I understand it reaches a broad audience and thus reprints.

10
BiggerDee I agree with you on the limited aspect and enjoyment factor, glad I got it.

11
I ended up breaking down and bought an uncut sheet seeing as how it's 'art'...yada yada. Anyway d&d released a second print of uncuts, I was mad at first but then got over it because the second run also sold out.

12
Not sure if y'all can still see the photos on eBay but there are definitely some damaged decks in that lot, hard to tell how many.

I totally agree but I would like to add that we have some good news. First, playing cards have been around for awhile and won't disappear even if the collecting trend does. Second, this time it's international

Oh, you mean just like real estate, right?  :))

Don I'm afraid you're right! But gotta be optimistic and hope for alittle magic.

While the prices will never plummet to the 50-cents-a-pack gift-shop level they once commanded, people will eventually stop paying such prices.  Comic books, baseball cards, tech stocks, real estate, junk bonds, you name it - where there's a bubble, sooner or later there's a needle that's going to pop it.

Don how could you leave out beanie babies?! Haha

Playing Card Plethora / Re: 150 decks of Absolut Vodka Playing cards
« on: April 25, 2013, 06:58:43 AM »
Yesterday I decided to do my occasional search on ebay for the decks that I find interesting. Lo and behold, I found this listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/absolut-150-packs-of-playing-cards-sealed-/111057969851?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19db9222bb

This is probably one of the best deals that I have seen for any type deck in a while. A grand total of $515 for 150 decks of Absolut Vodka playing cards, you cant get better than that; that's about $3.44 a deck.

Unfortunately, I did not have the money to snag this awesome deal but someone did. So my question is: Who bought it?
If any of you fellows out there bought this, hook a brother up  ;)

This was certainly one of the times that I wished I was rich.

Dude I saw this and snapped a screen shot

Haven't been on here in way too long. Awesome thread.

Just want to add through what I have researched online (nothing verified) they sold out in 99' when a French dude bought out the very last of the stock from casino. Something about they way I read it made me think it was at least two of those trucks. Can't find anything on who that is, but my guess would be a wise and educated french magician. Conspiracy theory brewing?

Don, Sorry about that. When I say they have the best finish I am referring to the true 001 first editions. The ones that are shrink wrapped on the outside of the box.

By all three I am referring to 001 first edition, 001 second edition, and sketch as previously mentioned.

below is a line up of the blue decks; two different version of 001 first edition including the misprint with the sideways card stock on far left (on bottom on second photo). Then far right is the 001 second edition.

18
[Edit-I am mistaken when I say 002; this should be 001. All apologies.]

Heads up to all the prime 1st edition; these are from Italy and shrink wrapped outside the box. The box has a seal on it as well. Don also informed me awhile ago that the hair detail lines in the angel are very faint on this box in comparison to the 002 edition.
There is also a big goof in the blue version. There are two versions; I believe that they inserted the paper the wrong direction during printing for a large batch. The misprints are nearly impossible to le Paul spread but feel over worn(or dead) when bowed the length of the card. I have a brick of these and figured out that the misprint is a darker blue box while the true version (like the reds) is in a lighter blue. The color difference is extremely subtle, I tried to photograph the difference for y'all but it doesn't come out. Best way to tell is to hold it up to a light and look at the graphite pattern.

The 2nd editions; still says 001 and italy on bottom but they are different. The cards inside the box are shrink wrapped and there are two extra cards in this deck. One of the prime seal logo with the wing angel and the other a blonde wearing red and says play responsibly at bottom. The sketch decks also have these two extra cards as well as stickers.

I have handled all three decks and in my opinion the 001's have the best finish while the sketch deck has the worst. The finishes are all essentially the same but every so slightly different. Maybe the true first edition has three coats....

I love this deck because I can do lifts easy as cake as well as other simple tricks. Then I can switch over and do a few flourishes no problem. It's my perfect middle of the road deck. Plus it has über thin boarders which I will always dig.

New add: Bicycle Truth Garden No. 03.  The China release was several days ago, the international release was a few hours ago.

Heads up, the bike truth gardens are sold out already

well shoot. and here i was thinking i was just being patience for international shipping. Thanks for the info Don.

@Gunshy, Like Don and others I also received my order about two weeks ago. Definitely something up. Best of luck with it.

@Don, thank you for compiling a list. I was getting ready to spend some time to scroll the thread for all the answers. Seeing the list already there is magic. Pun intended.

Pearl is to dragon as koi is to waterfall. Maybe the reversed wing tips on the aces have something to do with this and are considered a separate secret.

The steady hand to victory. Could this be the pre-arranged deck order? In other words faro shuffle and deal a great hand.

21
Well, he did compare them to Magic Finish Aladdins - they're supposedly made to better withstand the tropic conditions of Singapore.

I was told by Lawrence Sullivan that the production decks were going to have the LS diamond facing the correct direction...  C'est la vie, I guess...  The prototypes were facing the wrong direction.  (Or perhaps these are ALL the prototypes, and there will be a new edition that has it correct...)

That's pretty cool that they are made for the tropics like that. This makes me want to keep my remaining decks sealed till I find out about the protypes vs production run. I may write CARC and ask if they know what's up.

If you hold a legends card and a prime1 card up to a light, you will see the same pattern. I assume this is the graphite and glue.  This leads me to believe they are using the same stock if they are not all together the same. The dimpling is also identical. The only difference I have found is the legends truly do have a glass edge.

I found at the tips of the wings are wisp lines. On the bottom two they are missing but they are there on the top two. Also there is the same dark/light or thick/thin index like the ask Alexander's. if you arrange the cards by the thick/thin index then flip them over and use the wing tip wisp, you'll pull out all four aces. I am sure one could incorporate this into a pretty neat trick.

22
sr15-that makes sense. I opened right after pulling from my mailbox which is under a heater. Plus it's pretty warm here. I bet your right,  It's the temp.

Of topic-I have always wondered what stage lamps do to cards. From what I understand they create a lot of heat. Enough to make a person sweat. That has to have an impact on the longevity of a deck.

23
The decks used in the CARC photos are the same as mine, so the photos appear to have been taken with prototypes before the standard decks arrived.

The way to tell the difference is the diamond pattern on the center of the back.  On the tuck box (and supposedly the stock models) it's an "LS" ambigram (for the magician making this deck, Lawrence Sullivan), while for the prototypes the back image was flipped and the ambigram is no longer readable as such - it just looks like a pretty pattern.

Don, for your prototype deck, was the l.s. reversed and unreadable on both the cards as well as the box?

I received my order from CARC today and opened up the green-teal deck. My deck is identical to the images that CARC has; the tuck box has a readable l.s. on the diamond and on the card backs it's been flipped and is not readable. Anyone else have this or do they differ and how?

I think they are amazing cards. Remind me of prime1's which are in my top 5. Not a big fan of the custom courts, but I'll get over it. I think it's worth getting at least a deck of these. They are built to last and the perform great for me.

Sr15, I didn't have to break mine in at all. Right out of the box they handled great; springs, faro's, fans, Le Paul spreads. I practiced some cardistry with them to and didn't have a problem. (Granted I am not a pro at any of it).  I wondering if its got to do with our climates. I am in Georgia and most cards tend to clump and stick within 5 minutes of opening them. Are you in a hot and dry climate?

I have stated my opinion about D&D but just want to add how I find it ironic that the same people bashing them are ordering BRICKS from them.
@ Ben K: I'm not sure who your comments are directed at? From what I can tell, I'm the only one who mentioned buying a brick of New Fan Backs. I don't see how what I wrote about the Steamboats would be considered bashing. I certainly would not boycott D&D. I have enjoyed many of their products.
[/quote]

I wasn't directed at anyone, just speaking in general. I'm not sure but I think a few post may have been deleted.

I've finally done a side-by-side comparison with the D&D Steamboats and the Cincinnati USPC

Don, what year where your old steamboats produced? You said transition period but I am not familiar.

25
Alright so here's the deal on this. In about a month I'm moving to a new place, and packing starts now. The decks are just gonna be transported in their suitcase into the bigger home, where I will have tons of room to sprawl out and make an inventory. When I made this post I didn't realize all my used decks were mixed in with my sealed, for sale decks.

Once I sort things out, I'll be putting together le care package. I'll post information on how to contribute to shipping then, once I have a receipt or an estimate ready from USPS.

It all sounds good in the 'hood!  Thanks, bro.  And thanks to the rest of you for the support - you don't know just how much the kids love it when I give them the playing cards I just performed with.

Alex, ignore my message about PayPal. I will keep my eye on this thread for new info. Thanks for the update.

Don, kids hold the real magic when you bring them joy. Knowing you go the extra mile to make that last for them is pretty sweet. :)
