Never knew the Germans haven't ever had an aircraft carrier.

The germans excelled in submarines though. I'll be researching all day long to find the right ships for each court card.
Here is an Ace of spades for the USS deck.

Here is an update of the design. This time with the card back.
Any feedback is appreciated.

6
Ooo thats even better! I was talking about their logo colours.

7
The tuck box design is really nice!

My only suggestion is in the coloring of the "fortress." Looking back at the gray version, there was something elegant to the whole design. Now with this royal blue, it feels more busy. But I wonder if you shift the coloring of the "fortress" to be cooler, the whole design will feel united?  Or even better yet, a richer navy would do the trick to bring back the elegance? Just my thoughts!

Thanks for the feedback Sarah! I'd definitely dull down the blue as the most recent is too bright to my liking. This blue is the actual colour scheme for the US Navy. Going to work on the new colour scheme to make it more "vintage" matching the artwork for the courts and faces as well.

Keep you updated!  :karrit:

:D :D :D 6 Hours left! Another successful kickstarter campaign.
Hopefully the next project would be a breakthrough!

Latest update of the design.
Still working on the back design. But here is what I got so far
Any feedback is appreciated!

That's interesting Don!
I've been looking around forever to find information about that.

I'll find out where I can get a license for that. I'll probably need to contact someone in the USA, since don't think the UK would have anything to do with US navy.
You recon I should just email someone from the US Navy department?

EDIT: I found the link to licensing / trademark for the US Navy: http://www.navy.mil/trademarks/

Design & Development / World War II - Floating Fortress Commemoration Deck
« on: February 07, 2016, 06:23:39 PM »
Hey, I thought I would create a D&D thread to post the progress of the design and get some feedback from the community.

Inspired by World War II battleships (especially pearl harbour ones), Since its 75 years already since pearl harbour, I thought I would create a commemoration deck. As Don suggested, the courts will be designed based on the captains etc... But need to check if there are any copyright issues with that.

Hope you like this project!

12
I was thinking of having the courts as captains of the battleships. But it would be hard to find "Queens" as most of them are men.

13
Hey Don!

Glad to get your feedback. I put World War instead of specifying 1 or 2 is because there were battleships in world war 1 too.
But I guess you are right with sticking to one world war instead. commemoration of WWII and pearl harbour incident.

We've had "battleships" of some kind or another since the origins of the US Navy.  But as far as ships being known as "Floating Fortresses," that's a more recent development, mid-20th century.  In fact, a 1959 documentary movie called "Floating Fortress" uses the term to refer to the UK's most modern aircraft carrier of the time, while an American documentary production from 1952 of the same name follows a day in the life of a battleship off the coast of Korea.  In more modern terms, the phrase is being used to describe VLFSs (Very Large Floating Structures) that China plans to build - a floating military base stationed in the water far from shore, much longer than an aircraft carrier and capable of housing troops and other military facilities while functioning as a stationary floating airport.  The Chinese plan to use them as "deep sea comprehensive security bases" and one is presently being tested near Beijing.

References from World War II use the term to refer to the largest classes of battleships constructed specifically for that war.  Despite their exceptional firepower, alone they were extremely vulnerable to attacks from aircraft.  The Japanese used the term for their two "Yamato-class" battleships, the largest they ever built - the Yamato and the Musashi, each of which had a displacement of about 64,000 tons.  Neither was deployed in open seas until late in the war and both were sunk by US forces.  The Japanese incorrectly assumed when designing the two vessels that airplanes weren't capable of delivering enough of a payload to sink them.  It's ironic, since in the opening salvos of the Pacific Theater of WWII, only two days after the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese used air power to sink the battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battle cruiser HMS Repulse off Malaysia.  That incident is considered by historians to be the end of the era of large battleships and the beginning of the era of naval air power based on land and at sea as well as the aircraft carrier and the carrier group.

Interesting fact: a more commonly used term is that coined for the Army Air Corps' B-17 bomber - the "Flying Fortress."  They were thought to be powerful crafts when designed as well, having a relatively large crew, numerous gunports and a huge bomb payload capacity, but because they were fairly slow and ungainly due to their size and engine power (prop engines, not jets), they were very vulnerable to fighter aircraft and anti-air cannons on the ground.  They attempted to counter this using high-altitude bombing runs and fighter wing escorts, with limited success.  In many ways, they suffered similar vulnerabilities to those of large battleships.

It doesn't seem proper to use the deck as a commemorative of Pearl Harbor.  The Japanese didn't deploy any battleships to the actual attack, only aircraft.  The only US battleships present were unfortunately little more than floating targets rather than floating fortresses, caught in port and unable to respond adequately to the threat.

You are a living wikipedia! Thanks for the information I'll focus on the battleships of WWII in the US navy, maybe I'll have a different deck for the UK navy as well. Not sure if a japanese/nazi german deck would appeal though.

I don't usually go for the T shirts if they're offered. Once in a while I do. This one though, absolutely badass. I was in before, I'm in again. ;)

Thanks for the support FES! The t-shirts for Four Beasts weren't up to my standards, i have sourced better material this time.

And I must say, its probably the worst thing you can say that "you don't care".
I would agree with you if my phrase "I don't care" was not taken out of context

What did I mean "I don't care" in response to the false assumptions made by Don? I explained Don my position: I don't care of HIS speculations about my knowledge or  experience. I really don't care of HIS doubts whether my project will be launched on kickstarter. Is there a sense of care of such things?

"Do your duty, come what may"

But I do care of how to do my job and how to make the deck of cards better. And I do listen to other people's advice

I had no doubt because I have enough experience. And now you can take a sober view of my work

The problem is that conversation with Don went off the topic to false speculations. My poll was senselessly merged earlier with another topic and then was deleted. His further posts sounded disrespectful, as though he talked to the silly schoolchild

And he finds it possible to make references to this shameful fact. Such behavior is unacceptable for the professional

I don't regret about any of my words because I'm a polite person. Words and actions of Don forced me to regret that I began a conversation with him. I decided to delete that topic, but I have no such level of access and I edited out my posts. I am very disappointed with such attitude

Best Regards and Merry Christmas!

Don is a straightforward guy and he's doing you a favour giving you valuable advice. The playing card community is a tight one and everything goes around will be heard of.

All I can say is don't let your ego get upon yourself and stay humble. Because looking at your kickstarter project, listening to others advice would be your priority. Its not like Don is picking on you, he also wishes great projects to rise.

Your deck design is great, I can see shadows of federal 52, and you need to know your audience, instead of catering the whole playing card industry (poker, magic cardistry). I know because Ive learnt from experience. Focus on one audience and you will succeed.

my USPCC
your USPCC? :D Can you clarify this a little bit for us?

Obviously its "By USPCC" and its a typo.
I just went through the dev thread. And I must say, its probably the worst thing you can say that "you don't care".

Don is a great person and while he gives you ideas, he may sometimes come out offensive, but it is for your own good.
I have seen a lot of designers with so much ego they never listen, and even take things personally.

But yeh, from my personal experience, you should listen to what others say and care about your audience. I wouldn't have got to where I am currently if it weren't for the playing card community feedback. Thank god I was never so stuck up with my own design and ego, which obviously is what is happening here.

Take the borders off the back and make it full bleed.

They would look like LUXX Palmes won't it?

These are interesting cards, but I am curious.  What is it that pushed the price so high?  I see nothing special above the usual $9-11 cards offered.

Thanks
They are free shipping worldwide. Normally you will have to pay $4 - $10 for shipping just for a single deck.
They will hopefully be embossed and printed with foil tuck.
