Magical Cardistry Bonanza / Re: Homemade Flash Paper?
« on: June 27, 2013, 01:25:48 PM »
No one should attempt this work. I would counsel anyone not trained in chemistry to avoid nitration reactions. Even those who know what they are doing can have problems. I know from personal experience after 29-years in a chemical R&D lab as a technician. If you can't buy flash paper, just live without it. It is nowhere near worth the risk.

Just a thought: Perhaps they can be incorporated into an Industrial Revelation routine.

Playing Card Plethora / Madison Rounders by Ellusionist
« on: February 19, 2013, 06:22:01 PM »
I received a new deck (unsolicited, complete surprise) in the mail today. It is called Madison Rounders and it is put out by Ellusionist. There was a note in it indicating I received it since I was a Black Club member and Daniel Madison wanted to know what I thought about them before they were released. He asked me to try them out and provide some feedback on the Ellusionist Facebook page.

The cards have custome jokers, A of S, and all of the court cards. The rest are standard, with the exception that the red is darker than the standard Bicycle cherry-red.

The box has a nice texture to it - like an air-cushion finish. The long sides have absolutely nothing written on them. The bottom flap has Ellusionist info and the top has the deck name. Nowhere on the outside of the box does it say USPCC. It does say it on the Ace of Spades.

The cards have the usual magic finish smell. I think they are standard Bicycle stock - not Bee Casino. They seem two cards thinner than CARC Bee Erdnase deck and the same thickness as Bicycle Wounded Warrior. They don't feel stiff.

I like the back design (plain black with Madison logos at both ends) and the borders certainly are not thick. They seem to faro better back to front but front to back can be done - it's just a little hitchy right now. Maybe when they are broken in more it will be better. The spread and handle well like any new Bicycle deck.

Playing Card Plethora / Re: where can I buy orange tally ho?
« on: February 18, 2013, 03:37:20 PM »
I think pokerstud52 had the pink, not the orange decks. It may be that this is the only dealer. I haven't seen them anywhere else. I picked up some 6-8 weeks ago from him. He seems like a good seller, but I only bought from him once. The orange decks have steadily increased in price. I think they started out at about $5 or $6, and now they are about $11.

What a nice idea! The one that comes first to me when I think about nice Jokers is the Raider deck Joker - love it!

I think Alex might be thinking of Mr. Maric, anothe magician from Japan that had some decks out. He had some bridge size decks.

I don't know the Tamariz stack so I can't confirm this, but I remember someone reported that it is one faro away from the Tamariz stack. Perhaps someone who knows can check this out.

I was under the impression that the Wynn decks came from Ohio? If so, they can't be the best handling decks from Kentucky which was the question under discussion.

I don't have enough experience with a wide variety of custom decks to answer the question with any authority. I buy many of the decks as a collector, but since I don't ruin them quickly as I use them for magic, I haven't even used that many. However, I do like the CARC Bee Erdnase decks. My focus is magic, not cardistry.

Some of the finest mats available.

See the video here with an explanation of the two types:

Otherwise, almost any large magic retailer will sell mats. They often call them close-up pads.

The Conversation Parlor / Re: Favourite Movie/s
« on: January 12, 2013, 02:59:22 AM »
I've got too many and I won't remember them in one sitting, but here are some of my favorites:

A Christmas Carol (with Alistair Sim as Scrooge) - I watch it every year on Christmas Eve.
Superman and Superman II (with Christopher Reeve)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Independence Day
The Bourne Identity, Supremacy & Ultimatum
The Terminator and Terminator II (3rd and 4th not nearly as good)

Gotta be the most famous card scene ever...the poker game on the train in THE STING. They play with red Tally-Ho Fan Backs. Prior to the game, Newman/Gondorf warms up with Blue Rider Backs.

Just do "Mystery 6-Packs" or whatever you think would work for you. Put 6-decks in a flat-rate envelope and ship them out. Nobody gets to pick - that would be a nightmare for you to work through. People send you $8.00 (or whatever you think is right) and $5.00 coves shipping in the U.S. They then get a belated Christmas present with some mystery decks.

Just do it with domestic shipping. The international shipping costs make it rough for our overseas collector friends, but you can't do anything about that. Whatever's left, do a one-shot package for an international buyer.

It's the carbon fiber deck, not the whole set. They only send out one at a time. Perhaps the others will show up eventually.

SMOKE & MIRRORS V7!

WOOOOOOT!

Ebay has notified some sellers about a new program for international shipping that offers full protection and tracking for all international shipments. When that get's instituted, there will be a flood of new sellers offering worldwide shipping. Since most international buyers want the very lowest cost shipping which offers zero protection for the seller, sellers are wary of shipping that way. I'm not a professional card seller and I can't make up for losses through volume the way a deck dealer can. I have to be careful. I lose enough money through my card hobby as it is.

I've had potential bidders message me on Ebay to ask if I would add bidding from their country and I have done so. Plus, I certainly feel more comfortable shipping to people who are regular users of card forums rather than just some screen name on Ebay. Send  me a message on Ebay next time.

There's been too many ho-hum months. I won't be renewing. I'm sure when the 12 months are done it won't be a loss as far as value is concerned, but I would like more zip in the selections.

I agree Don. It isn't a ripoff, but I doubt I would have spent my money on most of the decks I've received so far since the great majority I already had. I still have about 4-months left though, and I am looking forward to it as I'm confident there will be one more goodie before my year is up.
