Hello neighbor - Biloxi here, also collect Bikes as well as Kem and other artists.  Always nice to see someone in my neck of the woods.  When you say Rook, you mean the card game Rook (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rook_(card_game) ?

Well, I think most that would be made today are most likely going to be more of the cheaper variety.  You may have better luck looking on Etsy for some more vintage sets as they may be better quality, and nostalgia adds to the love.  As for having some made, I imagine you are referring to something like MPC.  I've done that before, though it can be a bit pricey for just one or two special decks.

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

Hello there!

I’m Danielle, 36, civil engineer and graphic designer. I never set out to be a card collector, it just sort of happened as my stack of decks grew! I’m not going for rare or valuable finds, I just buy decks I like - usually colorful, feminine, gothic, or fantasy designs will catch my interest. I limit my scope to Bicycle branded decks.

I support many artists on Kickstarter and Patreon and have loved many of the deck designs. I’m currently working on a deck design if my own! I have the back done, but struggling a bit with the face cards. I look forward to sharing some updates as I progress!

I’m working on uploading my collection here: https://www.portfolio52.com/profile/20077/collection

Also - anyone have a recommendation for how/where to find a high quality Rook deck?

Danielle

Welcome, Danielle,

You seem to have gotten into card collecting in a similar manner to my wife, who specializes in decks with a more artistic bent - usually either transformation, semi-transformation or compilation decks where each card is designed by a different artist.  You should consider, as she did, joining 52 Plus Joker at some point - you'll learn so much more about cards and collecting them!

Forgive the website's current state - 1992 called and said they want their home page back!  We're working on a redesign.

If you have questions about your design, maybe I can help?  I've done consulting work professionally for artists looking to create a deck, among others.  Feel free to PM me or use the contact info in my signature below.

As far as a high quality Rook deck - these days, there's no such thing!  They're either old and vintage (expensive), old and heavily worn (not worth much) or new and cheaply made (again, not worth much).  MPC was mentioned - you can find them at http://makeplayingcards.com/ and they will do print work on a digital printer for a run as small as a single deck.  Just remember that you can't use protected copyrighted/trademarked art belonging to someone else - but you could make a reasonable facsimile for your own personal use, something that was close enough for gameplay but not close enough to violate copyrights/trademarks.  I know Rook is an old game, not likely to be protected under copyright or even patent at this point, but it may well be protected under trademark law, and trademarks can be renewed ad infinitum as long as the owner continues to use and defend the trademarks.
