Hey, I have to ask you guys a question here.

Would you EVER use one of these decks for a magic routine?

Think about it: pretty much ALL the CARC decks aside from the Bicycles & Ask Alex have the Erdnase theme going on.  They have his name, or his initials - or in one instance, come in a box designed to look like his book!  Many of them have little images on them - drawings of sleight of hand moves taken from his book!

I don't think I could ever pull a pack of these out for magic.  I mean, sure, the average spectator will never know what those things mean, but all it takes is for one person, that one in (name any high number) who gets curious enough to at least ask...

Now I definitely don't regret giving up on buying all these Erdnase decks.

thank you for saying that! Most of he time, I dont like a hack design with words on it which is why I dont like these. But I must say that the silver one is actually appealing

Will any of the big ebay sellers get these in both versions? I dont have any intention of becoming a member of the site but I would like a couple, I don't have the past decks but I like these colours. Also if any ebay sellers do get them does anyone know of any prices? Cheers

Unless they're selling them now, we won't know the price. But if a seller has the Silver Acorn Backs, its going to be a bit pricey.

Yeah, $50 bucks isn't unreasonable, but I'm not going to get any. I'm sure there will be some who pay that much once you can't get them from CARC anymore.

I got my brick in today and i must say they are my favorite CARC decks up to this point. The ivory is stiff as you would expect. The cambric fans and feels much better in the hands then the previous CARC decks. Comprehensive written review coming soon.

Cambric - textured, like air cushion; a finish term usually reserved for Bee decks (much like how Linoid finish is usually reserved for describing Tally Ho decks).

Ivory - smooth, more like smooth Aladdins but not as good, and generally very stiff in Bee stock.  Again, the term is usually reserved for Bee decks, but it was used recently for the Professional Bicycle decks (also made by CARC with USPC, also made from Bee stock).

Better in this case is a relative term.  Most people like air cushion/textured, some go for smooth, some like both.  You have to try them to see if you like them.  The best example of a good-handling smooth deck would definitely be the smooth Aladdins.  Aviators, also smooth, are on par with standard Bicycles.

And as Alex mentioned recently, smooth and textured aspects of a deck's finish are actually in the stock, not the finish.  The paper comes either smooth or textured.

Hey guys got a bit more info for you straight from Bill Kalush.

"They are a little different. It's not the finish per se but the coating. Because these cards were printed using metallic ink we used the Magic coating instead of our standard. At Conjuring Arts we prefer the regular coating but these black acorns using the magic coating turned out really well."

So it turns out the cambric decks are really magic finish. That being say i will write my comprehensive review, expect to see it soon.

First deck of these I opened had a very off-centered Joker and one side of the back of the Q Clubs had a green smear. Is anyone else getting issues?

Did he mean this in reference to only the cambric decks, or all of them?  Because that means this might just be the first smooth-finish deck to use Magic Finish!  Now I'm very curious...

Yeah, I brought up the same thing about the smooth ones earlier on skype. From what John said, they are standard, but I don't know if he actually tested them out well enough since he mentioned he didn't like them as much. :P

From CARC
"Hi, John.  The coating is on both the ivory and embossed decks, but we don't plan on using it on future cards as it's not our preferred coating.  Sorry to disappoint, but glad you're pleased with the Acorns!"

I'll take that as a yes :).

OK, now I think I'm going to have to check this deck out.  Coin of the realm, wherefore art thou?

Guys, I bought this deck.

The "Ivory" deck with the Magic Finish is - wow.  Stiff like a smooth deck often is, especially with the Bee stock, but the Magic Finish makes it so slick...

Alex, you HAVE to try out one of these decks.  It's impressive.

@don im my experience, as much as i love smooth finish decks, they tend to hold oil on the surface more so then other decks. have you noticed this at all? also, with the magic finish making them slick do they still cut and stay in packets well like other smooth finish decks?
have you heard the word???

Whoa, Tex!  Slow down...  I've had the deck open for maybe twenty-eight hours now, and I haven't used it for all twenty-eight of them!

I used them to shuffle, swing cut and play some solitaire and they felt superior to smooth-finish Aladdins, although as stiff as you would expect from Bee stock.  The feel was also superior to the ivory finish Pro Bicycles from CARC, which are also Bee stock.  Whether this will hold over time remains to be seen.  They slide off each other with extreme ease.

Beyond that, you'd have to get a cardist to review them.  Much as I'd like to be, I'm not one.

Additionally, I generally keep my hands clean when handling my cards and use a non-oily skin moisturizer.

  • Card for me maybe?
I've gotten a black acorn cambric deck yesterday, does anyone find the cards a little flimsy..? Maybe the stock of these are really really soft, I can bend them without using much force.  :)  easy to do riffle shuffles
Stalking the forums, I'm in that corner!
