Interesting Finishes on Our Favorites...

I wanted to share with you two very special decks that are sharing the spotlight because of their finishes... The 1955 - 1965 Bee Deck has a Smooth Finish... The 1940 - 1955 Bicycle has a High Finish... Both of these, to my knowledge, are Extremely Rare... I have never seen them before and I'm very excited to add them to my collection... Enjoy...

Ah, how I wish I had as many interesting vintage decks as you!
It's really interesting to see a regular Bicycle deck with High Finish. Or really, anything other than Air-Cushion. Any information on the finish itself, and why the change to Air-Cushion? Or are they two different names for the same thing?

Maybe someday we will see one. I often tell my fellow collectors here: USPC is a company without principles. As long as you pay, you can reprint any of their classic decks with the same designs and names, you may also have "MADE BY OOXX Company" printed on the boxes if you are happy with that.
 
As long as you pay, they may print "Smooth-High-Linen Finish" on the box for you.

Yes, the rights for the design is not owned by USPC. I have seen reprints of Arrco Tahoes, Arrco US Reg., New Fan Back, Big Gun, Aristocrat 727, Aladdin Dome Back,...

Yeah I wouldn't mind seeing some "new" jerry's either. Not the fake crappy ones but some good quality ones. That would be pretty cool. I wonder what the next big reprint is going to be, we've already had so many.

I like and collect '60-80s decks not sole because of their age (they are not old enough if compared with those tax stamp era decks), but also for their special handling. It is impossible for USPC to reproduce those decks (and handling).

That's an opinion. I've had this conversation on here many months ago, but I'll say it again. I really like the design of the JN decks. They are simple and they don't look cheesy for a deck promoting a casino. Sure they aren't anything like the Seasons decks or the Inifitys or many other decks, but I've always been a huge fan of how they look.

Yeah those aren't bad. Typically I'm not a fan of casino decks, but the JN decks are an exception. They are very simplistic in nature and for some reason I really like that. The dunes deck also looks pretty nice. Not sure what it is about these decks that strikes me the way it does, but hey it's not a bad thing right?

"The cards are similar to Golden Nuggets and Jerry's Nuggets in terms of quality. They are very stiff, but seem to hold up well. The faces are similar to modern Bicycle faces." If Jason England said so, we can not deny it.
 
Dunes is also Casino cards. It has the same era, design, quality, and handling as Jerry's Nugget. However, if I say they are not bad, that's because the special handling instead of the design (well, maybe a little).
 
'60-80s is very special, there were many excellent decks, as well as many excellent magicians in the period of time. Prior to '60s, decks are collectible for their age/history, but all of them are poor for handling. After '80s, I don't think there are many decks worth collecting, especially in '90s.

I may not like the Jerry's Nugget derricks or the Dunes "phalluses", but I can't argue about the quality of the cards that were produced in the era from the 1960s into the early 1980s.  Before then, card companies lacked the quality of stock and finish technology.  After then, card companies cared far more about profit than they did about quality and the manufacturing processes developed then emphasized that.


However, I feel that there are advances taking place today that will surpass the quality of even the coveted Jerry's Nugget decks.  Look at something like the Tendril deck - have you ever seen anything like that produced during any time period before?  Magic Finish was something out of a fever dream back then.  Photoshop?  That's where they bought Kodak film, sent negatives for one-week processing and got pictures framed...


I'm simply saying don't write off today's designs just yet.  For every hundred Trace decks, there are some quality productions out there.  Today's Vortex and Tendril will become tomorrow's vintage.

It was this part of your previous comment that led me to think otherwise:

Sure the old methods can't be reproduced.  But given time, I think some modern decks will indeed be highly collectible, and not just because they have a big "DD" on the back of them.  The big issue is whether USPC gets off their butts and takes a cue from the designers hiring them to make their most unique products.  They need to lead innovation rather than be led by it, and aside from Magic Finish, they're doing more of the following.

@Don, I knew I could not express it correctly. I said "not worth collecting", but it doesn't mean "not worth to own them".
 
Collecting, in my language, has slightly different definition. We should spend time (to search, reserach) and efforts (maybe negociate with the former owner) to get an item, it is called "collecting" in my language. If I sit in front of the computer, hit the keyboard, and get an item after 2 days, it is called buying.
 
It is still true to say there were not many decks produced in '90s worth collecting except: Holiday/Santa Backs, 1996 Olympics, '92 and '95 Tall Stacks. What else? As for decks produced after 2000, some of them are wonderful, but it is not diffilcult to get those decks. I have many of these decks, I just paid and got them. I don't say I "collect" them.
 
This might be off topic. I like many modern decks, they are beautiful and have good quality. However, I only buy those I like instead of all decks produced in these years. I've seen many so called collectors buy every newly released deck, normally buy 2 decks -- 1 for collection and 1 for use. I respect their choices, but it is not my way of card collecting. Maybe they want to build a museum of playing cards in the future
