That effect is a variation of what is taught on this dvd (http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/618) called ultimate transpo. Its quite a simple effect, and it "hits" much harder in my opinion if you do the version taught on the dvd, although the version shown in the video you linked to is completely impromptu.

I like this trick, it's simple and shows how double lifts are amazing.

To spectators doing a simple DL transpo is so powerfull and often something we as magicians don't perform because we may think its to easy to be impressive. As long as you can do a DL and not get caught of course
Mystery is the basic appeal of magic. Once the secrets are known, the magician becomes a mere manipulator, an actor in a suspense drama which has little impact because the audience knows the ending in advance.

  • Pick a card, any card...no, not THAT card!

I do a variation of this trick using the jokers to the kids in the hospital.  Use a card from a previous trick as the spectator's card, or let him choose one and show it off when you collect it, telling him it's not that kind of trick (often gets a laugh).  I double lift two jokers out of the deck box as one (they have to be identical jokers) and put it on top, then put their card on "my joker" but "I have to rub it a little first, to get some magic on it" (I ham it up a bit and it allows me to do an Erdnase exchange to get it between the two jokers).  I double-lift to show them their card as I ask them to hold out a flat hand, single lift a joker there while they think it's their card and tell them to make a cage over the card with their other hand.  I double lift to show them "my joker", single lift to do the hocus-pocus over their hand, and presto - their card swapped places with my joker.  Easy trick, but leaves a good impression, especially if I enhance it with something like Pure Smoke.
