Hi all!

New to card collecting but not new to collecting. I collect coins/paper money and perfume bottle as well.

Lately I got attracted to card design, seasons and mana deck in particular.

Personally, I think it's another level of art (design or collecting)

What's people's thoughts on collecting cards?

PS. I don't even have a deck to start my collection yet . Any suggestion?

Welcome!

Looks like you've got yourself some heavy load there, financially.

I personally only collect Bicycle branded cards, just to put a limit on myself and not purchase all the new decks that are flooding the market right now. Though I do occasionally pick up some with brilliant designs, like the seasons and mana you mentioned.

As a starter, I would suggest you start off with decks from the bigger companies. Namely Ellusionist, Theory11, and the rising The Blue Crown, and if you've got the money, maybe get into Dan&Dave too!

Good luck in collecting!

Thanks!

I collect coin from different countries or different editions. it takes time but not so much money.
Perfume bottles - I am a sucker for packaging so sometime i just buy empty bottles. Someone's garbage is someone else's gold that works out great for me. haha

Welcome to the forums! I definitely recommend you start by collecting the basics: Ellusionist, Theory11, Dan and Dave, The Blue Crown decks before anything else. That will allow you to get a strong foundation. If you don't have a whole lot of extra money laying around, I also recommend you don't buy vintage or rare decks so you can focus on new and awesome releases. I know some people who have just started collecting and decided to only buy the decks release from then on, so they could stay up to date with all the releases without having to cash out on those as well as on the hundreds of older decks.

Welcome, Chisairi - remember we were all newbies once.  If you have a question, just ask.

Now, guys - when you're talking basics, you really should get to BASICS, as in the true CLASSICS.  Bicycle Rider Back, Bee Diamond Back, Tally Ho Circle and Fan Backs.  THAT'S where EVERY collection truly begins; those are the cards I've played with since I was a kid.  You can branch out a bit and check out some of the other less-common classics from there - Aviator, Hoyle Shellbacks, even Streamlines.  Streamlines are cheap as hell (only $1 a pack at WalMarts in the US), but they're actually pretty good quality.

With those decks, all fairly inexpensive and commonly found in stores all over the US, Canada and in some other parts of the world, you get your foundation and get to see the different types of stock, cuts and textures/finishes.  (Well, Tally Ho is harder to find - it's a regional brand largely sold just in New York City and magic shops - but it's worth it, they're some of the best cards made.)  Then, when people talk about something like CARC Professional Bicycles being traditionally cut and made on Bee casino stock in both Ivory and Air Cushion finishes, you'll have some idea of what that means.  That's when you should branch out and buy the custom-made decks these guys are talking about.

Remember, you don't have to drive yourself crazy getting everything under the sun - that way madness and poverty awaits!  Be fussy, choosy and particular, only purchasing decks that truly appeal to you.  You'll save yourself a lot of time and money in the long run.

Hey there. Welcome to the Discourse!
I'm so glad you dropped by here and decided to join us crazy and wonderful folks. :P

Wow you are starting out in Card collecting. Thats going to be so exciting!

I agree with Don, get the BASICS of the BASICS, Bicycle Rider backs (Standards), Tally Hos Circle and Fan backs, the BEES, Diamond backs. These are inexpensive really. Then you can get the Titanium Editions of them too. :P
After that you can start getting the other stuff. Too bad you just missed the Tendrils, those are really beautiful cards, by far my favourites when it comes to black cards. :P But I'm sure there will be some of those that will be put on sale.

Anyway, as for the forums, just wanted to let you know that you will find yourself getting lost in the vast array of topics and discussions here. Most of which I am pretty sure you will find interesting. Everything under the sun is discussed here. YEAP ANYTHING and EVERYTHING (well maybe not EVERYTHING but a lot of things).
If you are looking for a particular topic or subject matter, the SEARCH function is your best tool. :P

Don't hesistate to PM any of the admins/mods if you have any questions or concerns, I'm sure they will be more than happy to help you out. :P

other than that. Do have LOTS of fun here in AETHERIAAAAAAH. :P

Welcome to the forums!

Anyways when it comes to collecting and buying cards, I just go for the decks that look coolest to me. If you don't intend to open the decks then just buy the coolest packaged decks.

And like what don said, buy all the common classics. The basic cards are cheap and your collection of cards will be pretty innocent. Then branch off to your favorite style, if you like tally hos for example then buy its variances.

Then its all good

  • Card for me maybe?
Hi chisairi! Welcome to the forums! I'm just curious, what's the most important detail you look at when you see a deck of cards? The design, quality, brand?  ??? Personally the amazing designs is what got me into collecting cards in the first place! and yes, mana and seasons are without a doubt the most AMAZING decks I've seen so far. Mana is simple and with the right colours and a few tweaks even the standard court cards look amazing! seasons is without a doubt really pure classic to me. haha but then opinions do change, back then I felt that fulton's clip joint was the 'best' but when I got it I was like.. meh.. still love the design of that tuck box though! okay I'm getting carried away, welcome to the forums, lots of topics and friendly people here! oh and a tip when starting a new collection, look out for those 'variety packs' on ebay selling different types of decks at usually cheaper than getting each deck separately, it's good if you're just starting out because you'll most probably not have those decks in the 'variety pack' while us sad people usually have half to three quarters of the 'variety pack' but yet want a particular deck or two in the 'variety pack'.

What is your favorite coin?

My favourite is the american half dollar (you cant use them any more) and British coins ( i like things in a group..you can make a shield from all the coins).
but the 2010 Vancouver Olympic is what I am proud of the most! I actually have the whole set. Took me forever to collect them all but the feeling beats buying them off the shelf.

Yes, I am from Canada if you are wondering. ^^

Thanks!

I asked the same questions too! Right now for me is the design of the card. I personally like it simple. I am not a fan of super detailed design. It's the thoughts behind those lines count. (Sorry I have an architectural background..that's how we think)

Aside from that, it will be quality that I look for later on when I get to know more. I heard many people talk about the "white lion deck" being the top quality lately. Anyone want to expand on that??

hmm architectural.. check out circle card city's revision 1 deck, i'm sure you'll like it  :)

here's the link for the forum page
http://aethercards.com/discourse/index.php?topic=839.0

and here's a picture, sorry I couldn't find the pictures of the cards but look at the one on the tuck box, it looks like blue prints due to the colour and sketches
http://circlecitycards.com/images/content/revision1/cardDeck.png

as for quality I'm not too sure, I don't handle cards that often and I'm not that familiar with the finishes and stock of the different cards, you'll have to ask the others about that.. I don't think the white lions are the best though, if I'm not wrong there are better quality than that but it all boils down to the user, some may like stiffer stocks while other may like softer stocks. btw finishes and stock determine the quality if you did not know that, if you do then good for you! (No sarcasm intended!)

Revision 1 is cool because it's different but from an architectural and designer point of view I don't like it so much. I admit that we spend a lot of time doing blue print drawings but it's not just about that. I guess it's a stereotype image the general public sees. I am not 100% sure about the concept of the design but that's the message I am getting from the design (mostly because how the uncut is designed).

Trust me when I tell you that having the cards in your hands is a much-different experience than simply looking at an image of them online.  The color is very unique, and the reds really pop on this deck.  If you took out this deck in a public setting (as I have), it will almost always attract comments from people who see it.  They're very nice-looking cards and they handle very well, thanks to Magic Finish.

Hi welcome to the discoure :D
if you are just starting your collection you might want to try this link .. http://www.ebay.com/itm/UPDATED-Unique-Bicycle-playing-cards-collection-56-DECKS-/251027237254?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a7263a986
we have a thread discussing about the bundle and so think that it pretty expensive since most people might already have most of the deck .. but since you are just starting out this bundle is perfect for you

That's some good progress you've made! Usually the bigger your collection, the faster it grows. What decks have you received?

Welcome to the forums! - When starting out a collection, what type of collection are you looking to build? Are you looking to collect every deck out there, or would you rather stick to certain brand names so it won't kill your wallet? Someone have certain preference and other just go all out there. Like almost everyone has said above, when starting a collection, you'll have to start with the basics. That means Bicycle, Bee, Tally-Ho, and maybe some Avaitors. Telling us about what your tastes are will help us later on see pinpoint which decks are best for you. So, give it a go!

I heard many people talk about the "white lion deck" being the top quality lately. Anyone want to expand on that??

White Lions are the fourth deck design released by David Blaine.  As with previous releases, the cards were originally intended just for his own use, but eventually he usually releases a limited quantity for public sales.  The deck is noted for a soft but sturdy stock, very good glide, and an attractive yet simple back design of his "db" logo in a repeating pattern.  Four versions were made: the "Series A Blue" deck was the most common design, though still a limited edition.  750 decks in a red back were released, 250 were released with a blue back and UV-sensitive paper meant to glow under a UV light and 250 were released in a "rainbow" version which had purple backs in varying shades - they were created when USPC switched the print run in mid-print from blue to red.

David Blaine's "Anything is Possible" deck-in-a-bottle for the red White Lions came with a bottled-up deck of the red deck and a boxed set of one red deck and one "rainbow" deck.

David Blaine's Variety Box, sold in a limited 250-set run, contained 12 decks, of which the UV blue and the red were included.

The common blue deck is selling on eBay for about $15.  Some retailers also have them in stock.  The price is steep, but that's due to the deck being sold out for months, never to be reprinted.  The other three models fetch a much-higher price.
