Well on the pictures describing the products, their only difference is that the blue ones say standard and the red ones say Jumbo. So I'm guessing that will be their difference.

That doesn't mean a thing about the actual variety of what's available.  It means that there will be blue cards in standard and red ones in jumbo, but it doesn't EXCLUDE the possibility of all four combinations of color and index size.

Yes, that is true. But normally they split them in every possible category division. But anyways, all I was trying to say is that it seems they will be jumbo and standard.
Also, I think I can confirm what PokerStud52 is saying about them selling out their stock: at my Walgreens they have just put on the shelves tons of Studs with defects: no seal, or no plastic thing covering the seal, or neither, and although I go to walgreens almost everyday and check on the cards section, I've never seen some with such defects. That would mean they are emptying out their stocks if I'm not mistaken.

I've seen defective decks like that a lot at my Walgreens.  But they're presently out of stock on Studs, with no Play Right ads, signs, etc.

That's weird... For the past 2 months or so, they've had a picture of the red and blue play rights above the Stud tag, replacing the regular Stud picture.

Remember when these cards came out, no one recognized the jokers?

This photo is from an eBay sale of twelve "vintage" decks of NHL playing cards made by USPC for sale in Canada.  I think this guy's definition of "vintage" is a little off-kilter, considering the deck box is dated 2010!

Those jokers look MIGHTY familiar... :))

Hey Don

Take a look at the picture you posted.
It clearly says "Vintage" on the deck

Since you did not post the link to the auction I couldn't see how the guy actually worded the statement.
However
If he worded it as you said "12 Vintage decks of hockey playing cards" than he was being misleading and or inaccurate
If he worded it "12 decks of vintage Hockey cards " then the person was completely accurate because that is what it says on the deck

I love the Studs. Sad to hear they are being replaced :( Some send me some! :P  But these Play-Rights look mighty fine. I got to pick some up.

It was the former, not the latter.

They're OK, but not outstanding.  Slightly thinner/cheaper than Studs in manufacture, but also lower in price.  Flourishers will appreciate the thinness, I think.

Digi... You've been gone too long, both the Hockey decks and the Play Rights are ridiculous... As for whether they're Vintage Hockey decks or Hockey decks that are vintage, either way, they suck... ;)

I've seen those jokers on another deck, the mid-90s 818 deck I have from the USPC. It's an interesting deck and it has those jokers.

I'm betting that with the economy being what it is, Walgreens wanted to drop the Studs (which were only slightly cheaper than Bicycles in their stores) and replace them with a more budget-conscious deck.  They sacrificed just a little quality for the Play Rights, while at the same time being able to price them (at least in some stores) as cheap as $0.99, which was what I paid for mine in Florida.  In other words, Walgreens wanted their own personal "Streamline" deck to compete on price with companies like WalMart.

I've seen those jokers on another deck, the mid-90s 818 deck I have from the USPC. It's an interesting deck and it has those jokers.

Could you favor us with some pictures?  Never heard of an 818 deck before.

Was at my local Walgreens yesterday.  Red Play Right decks in stock - but only jumbo index.  Other than the different backs and seemingly thinner stock, it might as well be a pack of Studs.  Same Arrco jumbo index faces.  Same ad cards pushing Walgreens.

Someone commented before that the PR display showed only blue with standard index and red with jumbo.  I would be extremely surprised if they have no plans to release the opposing color/index combinations to these: blue/jumbo and red/standard.  But so far, it's all anyone's seen.

Unless someone else out there has and is keeping it to themselves...

At this past week's 52 Plus Joker/Chicago Playing Card Collectors joint convention in Erlanger, USPC sources confirmed Walgreens made "a marketing decision" and ordered the new Play Right cards in blue only for standard faces, and red only for the jumbo faces.

Yes, astute sales executives pointed out the blue/red contrasting color preference for poker players, etc., but that didn't faze Walgreens.  Perhaps sales figures might convince the chain otherwise in a few months.

The cards are slowly replacing traditional Studs across the country.
Studs are going away because the filigree design, style and brand name are old-fashioned.  It's time for a new look (and perhaps some better sales) to the Walgreens, lower-priced playing cards line.

The move retires a brand and designs that go back into the late 1950s.  USPC, Hoyle and Arrco all made Studs in various forms for Walgreens.  The Stud horse now has gone the way of Po-do (also spelled Peau-deux in French) -- the 1930s-1960s bridge card line named for the dog of the Walgreens founder.

Card watchers may mourn the loss of Studs.  However, take some comfort that Walgreens continued to ask USPC to make its decks in the U.S. and with consistent good quality.  Other retailers already had eliminated or turned their house-brand card business away from USPC and the U.S., in favor of other companies making cheaper-quality cards in China and elsewhere.  Rite-Aid comes to mind.

(Stock up now if you think they may be worth holding for several years... though this last run of darker blues and reds is likely not as popular as the previous incarnation of brighter blue and red backs hoarded in 2007!)

Prices ranged from $1.99 to $2.49 at various stores in metro Louisville, northern Kentucky and the Cincinnati/Dayton/Springfield area this past weekend.  Walgreens does put its cards on sale several times a year.  Watch the weekly ads.

The joker has been in use at USPC for at least ten years.  You saw it in the short-lived (and yes, made in China) Club Casino decks by Hoyle.  It appears in several custom decks, too.

52 Plus Joker and Chicago Playing Card Collectors always welcome new members and questions.  Google each organization for the web pages.

Andrew (I'm guessing you took your name from the playing card company), allow me to be the first to welcome you here to the Discourse.  You appear to be very knowledgable with great communication skills!  I'm guessing you're a 52+J member?  I was convinced to join when I met Tom and Judy Dawson at their Toronto home while on a visit to meet Lee Asher - he facilitated my introduction to the Dawsons.  Tom enticed me with two antique decks from his collection (no, not something insanely valuable, but nice nonetheless) in exchange for joining!

Your information on both the Play Rights and the Studs are extremely welcome.  Hopefully we'll see a lot more of you around here - the majority of people on this message board are very friendly.

Agreed.

(And I just narrowly managed to pick up the last 25 decks of Studs from my local Walgreen's...)

Hey 'Andrew',

It's great to hear from another fellow 52+J member!  The Erlanger trip was great and it fantastic meeting all of the USPCC crew whom I have been in contact with through the past 18 months.

BTW Tom and Judy are probably the nicest, warm people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.  I only wish I had the opportunity to stay longer to speak with them and the other members more.

I agree.

Thin stock, smooth finish. Nice handling deck. The decks Ive used make me want to say better handling then their predecessor (studs).

The AoS and Jokers have to go. I would buy so many more if not for that.

Actually, the finish isn't really smooth - it's still embossed.  But I think it's embossed less deeply.  Maybe it's because of the thinness of the stock?

It's actually quite possible that the handling is better than at least the last printing of Studs.  Remember when USPC quality took a hit for the first year or so after moving to Erlanger in August of 2009?  Compared to older packs, though, it's probably just a matter of whether you prefer a thin stock or a thick one - I'd guess they're closer in quality and performance.  It would be a lot like comparing standard Bikes (not made in 2009 or 2010) and Tally Ho of the same time period - they're both decent decks, it's just which stock type you like better.

I'm sorry Don. I don't mean smooth as in emboss or non-emboss. I was referring to the slickness of the deck and how nice they handle out of the box. They fans effortlessly and yet you still feel in control.

Studs: I own some of the older Cincinnati Studs (collection) but I've only handled the Erlanger Studs. I'm leaning towards thicker stock these days, so I have not handled Erlanger Studs in months.

I still think the Studs were so much classier than the Play-Rights.  Why they made this switch is absolutely befuddling.

I agree. Classic back design, Arrco faces...

Was it Walgreens that made the decision or USPCC not wanting Studs being distributed under the Walgreen name anymore?
