Thanks! I have no idea what drew me to just check on the discourse 2 months after I forgot about it. But here I am.

I think I'm past the stage of learning beginner's flourishes. Working on the 360 fan, its not going well.

That's the case, from what I hear.  Why else would USPC make a brand exclusively for sale in Singapore? 


Asia in general is very big on playing cards.  Lee Asher saw all kinds of stuff in China when he was on a lecture tour there.  Favorite US brand is Bee, favorite domestic brand is Yaoji.

All other factors being equal, Air Cushion (textured) cards are usually not as stiff and springy as smooth cards.  It's simple physics - which is easier to bend, a sheet of solid metal or a sheet of metal with a bunch of dents banged into it?    The dents affect the structural integrity, resulting in a card that's not as stiff.  That cling you mentioned with the smooth Aladdins is a characteristic of a smooth card, while the fanning/slipping ability is what dimpled card surfaces were made for - just like how golf balls are dimpled for better aerodynamics because the dimples create air pockets ("a cushion of air") around the surface.

So actually your golf-ball thing got me thinking, in a card throw of equal angle, velocity and wind-speeds, would a dimpled card travel further? MYTHBUSTERS GO!

Simply put - yes, it would.  It's more aerodynamic.


The texturing or lack thereof is actually not a feature of the finish.  It was, once, but these days the paper is "predimpled" or left smooth in the process of gluing the layers of card stock together.
