This is something I just noticed on KS and it is different that usual, they are actual casino cards. They are printed by the Liberty Playing Card Company, no idea what their quality is like, but it's new so I figure I would post it. I don't think these will get funded but who knows.

These are "casino-style" playing cards.  There are no casinos anywhere on the island of Key West.  It was a project that derived from fictional "Key West Casino" poker chips that were created for home players.  Try this link and you can leave a message for the creator of the deck!

If there is a trusted reviewer here who'd like to do a review of these cards, I can send out two decks from the early run.

FYI, the artist who designed the card back and the casino ace is widely known in the casino chip world for his great casino chip designs, and is much sought-after. He did the original artwork on the Key West chips, and this deck is his first card back design. I love classic look of the card back, and really like what he did with the Ace of Spades.

FYI, Liberty does not overwrap their boxes with cellophane and tear tape, like USPC. The cards are cello-wrapped inside the boxes. This may be an unusual feature.

I've always found you don't need much of a reason to hop in the car and drive down to Key West.

It's not common, but USPC used to wrap the cards in the box rather than the box itself.  Some companies, like Fournier (a USPC subsidiary in Vitoria, Spain), still uses the practice.  Sometimes a deck will even be cellowrapped both ways, on the cards and on the box.

I looked into cello overwrapping on the first 600 decks after they arrived.

Just like anything else, I had a hard time finding a company that wanted to do a job this small, and when I did, the prices were outrageous. I think they quoted me a price that would be more than the decks.

So the Kickstarter project for these decks has really started slowly.

I've been contacted by an ad guy about it who says he can kick up support on a series of gaming websites.

Has anyone here had success with this, or are the gamers more about board / video games?

I think that
A. You can do your own advertising at gaming websites, so don't pay an advertising guy to do it. There aren't that many big gaming websites and the boards, like this one are freely, open to all.
B.I don't think gamers are your audience. This deck would not appeal to most gamers, so advertising on those sites (except for Board game Geek which has a wider audience) will not be worth your time.

If by "gaming" they mean videogamers and boardgamers, then no - they'd have little interest at best.

If by "gaming" they mean the poker message board sites out there that are very similar in many ways to this site, just with a somewhat different target audience, then yes...but you can simply hit those boards like you're hitting this one, hawking your wares and finding interested buyers.  Anyone who picked up the Key West Casino chips would probably be dying to get the matching cards - but the odds of someone here having bought those chips isn't anywhere near as high as at a poker message board.

The only reason you'd need a web advertiser would be if you simply didn't have the time to do it yourself and pop into those boards.  Otherwise, save your cash and DIY.

I thought  I needed to do something big to get this project noticed, so...

Ads are up. We'll be placing 175,000 banner views on various websites over the next 22 days, so this may help get us moving.

Also, I've reduced the reward levels for uncut sheets, and added two new rewards.

Backer Party in Atlantic City -- I've scheduled a 1-hour "meet and greet" for backers at the Tropicana in Atlantic City for Saturday, April 20 if you pledge at the $100 level. Guests will have light fare and beverages and will receive a gift box with eight decks of cards. (Limited to 50 guests.)

VIP backers who wish to pledge $1,000 will attend the backer party, get 48 decks of cards, have dinner at the Trop after the backer party and stay overnight.

The actual cost of these rewards may approach the amount pledged, but it may create some support for the project and allows me six months to plan, pay for and execute the party and VIP arrangements.

And they can only happen if we get funding.

This deck has really been taking a beating over on that other big card site, where it's pretty much "USPC or nothing." Some folks there, with Kickstarter projects of their own to get funded, have been doing what they can to kill this deck, despite positive reviews from all the reviewers who got decks.

I really appreciate that members here are more positive and helpful.

Hey, you can use the name - we know who you're talking about and they're not exactly Voldemort...  :))

I think it has more to do with this forum being generally more laid back about all things card-related, judging from the impressions I've been given from people who hang there more than I do. They didn't seem rude or over-negative over there - I looked.  Even here you've got hardcore "purists".  Some only buy USPC, some only by Bicycle.  To each his own.  You probably don't hear from them much here because they just haven't chosen to chime in.

Personally, I'm hoping the deck makes it and that I get the ones I pledged for.  Some of the best decks I own are not from the USPC factory floor...

Thank you, Don. I think you have nothing to worry about.

What I can say right now is, "not funded by Kickstarter" does not always mean "not made," and "Plan B" is in the works right now.

Production of the Key West Resort & Casino playing cards is going forward without Kickstarter funding.

I placed the order with the manufacturer on Monday, Oct. 24, 2012. The cards should be ready to ship in two to three weeks, so they are on or ahead of schedule.

A website was launched as a "contact point" to sell the cards. The link is:

http://www.keywestresortcasino.com

Decks are sold in red / blue pairs.

Prices:

  • 2 to  6 decks -- $3 per deck, plus shipping ($6 in the U.S., $10 Int'l)
    8 decks: $2.95 -- per deck, plus shipping ($5.25 in the U.S., $16.95 Int'l)
12 decks or more decks -- $2.89 per deck plus $11.35 U.S. shipping
    24 or 36 decks -- $2.89 per deck, $10 U.S. shipping for the box;
    48 decks -- $2.89 per deck, free U.S. shipping
The "Magician's Box" special from Kickstarter is available. It's six decks -- 3 red and 3 blue decks -- plus one each Key West "NCV" (blue) and $5 (red) casino chips for "slight of hand" illusions. U.S. shipping is $5.35 (Priority mail flat rate).

Feel free to visit the site and look around. If you order (e-mail: orders@keywestresortcasino.com), mention aethercards.com for a $1 shipping discount. If you'd like access to the "VIP Club" page, PM me here.
