Here we go again... hopefully nobody has made a topic about this before me! ;)

A new playing cards project has just been created at Kickstarter.. these cards are called "8-Bit Playing Cards". The project is created by Cobey Pile and the artwork for the cards are made by Michael Scott.

The theme of the deck is pretty simple, yet quite nice IMO. The whole deck is made up around the old 8-bit video games! Therefore, the design on the playing cards are different from what we are used to see from a custom deck. See the pictures below! ;)

The cards will be printed by USPCC with the air cushion finish.

What do you guys think about the cards? Are you going to support the project? I am not sure yet if I am going to support the project or not because of the theme.. not sure if I like it or not :)

Well I really like the traditional style faces. Not too crazy about the other ones, but the deck in all looks really cool. Love the backs.  I might pick up quite a few!

I don't now about it all.. think the idea is amazing, really love that! But I don't know if the design is to simple, even though that's the way the deck is supposed to be.. but I have pledged for a couple of deck though! ;)

The only card I really like is that King of Hearts. All the other ones look to far out there for me.

Yeah I kind of agree with you.. I like the King of Hearts a lot, I think it looking great, but when I compare it to The Jack of Diamonds, then.. yeah, I think the difference in the design is way to big.. and the Jack looks a little weird as well I have to say.. at least compared to The King of Hearts!

What do you think about the Ace of Spades? I kinda like it.. think it's pretty cool.. still simple, fits the deck very well :)

I dunno.  To me, it's meh.  I liked that "Legend of Zelda" deck much better.  I have a so-so Atari 2600 deck that looks better than this one.

I think it's quite nice and can certainly relate to the deck, being an old gamer. It would be a fun deck to play with, and the King of Hearts holding the controller is a nice touch. Will pledge for a few  :)

Ha ha okay, guess you're not going to support the project then! ;)
I do agree with you, I have seen some deck (with the whole game-theme) that looks better, but this deck is still kinda different due to the fact that the deck is not that tied up to one single video game, but more the whole 8-bit-thing, which is cool to me. :)

Yeah, I'm feeling the same way! I think it is really fun to play card games with this deck.. as well as you might be able to have some fun with it if you're a magician ;)

I also dislike how irregular the court cards are, they'd have been cool if they were regular and but just in 8-bit, but come on a TREE for the King of Spades?!

Now the deck features a two-way back design!  ;)

I hate to disappoint you, but that's NOT a two-way back!  The stripe on the NES cartridges is the one-way mark.  Right side when oriented one way, left side when oriented the other.

Yeah, I see... :(
I didn't notice that one stripe... too bad! But maybe the design will get redone once again, just to fix that minor issue.. I hope so :)

Guess you have an eye for that sort of stuff, Don  ;)

I do.

I'd like this deck more if it had truly recognizable elements (which would practically require licensing from Nintendo) or at the least a consistent design.  I see images that have two or even three different sizes of pixels in them.  It looks like you were converting the image into two or three different resolutions but stopped half-way through.

This had potential, but it's so poorly done I even regret have taken a closer look. It's not even symmetrical or aligned.

It's probably going to be a very successful funding, though. All because of the theme picked.

Damn, that tuckbox... that back design...  :(

Seems like the designer now have redone the back design once again to make it a complete two-way back :)

I like the overall idea. However, there are just too many other little nitpicks I have with it for me to pledge.

Someone out there loves this deck, because it just reached its goal a short while ago and there's over four weeks left for funding...

Call me fussy, but I like my cards with art that makes sense.

Hey Don,

I whipped this up the other night and posted it in the 8-Bit KS thread over on UC with comments on my suggestions for the deck. I figured I should do something similar over here!

Growing up, my brothers and I were HUGE Nintendo and Super Nintendo gamers! I haven't pledged for this deck but see a lot of potential. Particularly with their King of Hearts. I spent a little time putting together a different suggestion for the Tuck Box (posted below). It could look sweet if they did something similar and the Gold was all Metallic, Foil-Stamped Ink!

My other suggestions were to redo all of the court cards in the same style as the King of Hearts and redo the Back Design with references to brighter colored games like Mario, Zelda or Kid Icarus.

thanks, Randy

  • Kickstarter:
The king of hearts looks awesome. The back and other cards, on the other hand, are a completely different story. I would LOVE this deck, if they just applied the same 8 bit style to all the other court cards, made another back, and then let it be.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'd be interested in this deck if the designs were consistent - but they're all over the place.  "8-bit" meant blocky pixels in limited colors, but chose a single pixel size and be done with it!  I would have been happy with pixelized versions of existing court cards, values and suit pips.  This is just a mess.

The best idea they had was the sleeve for the tuck box - straight outta NES Cart-land!
