I am thinking of visiting America After I finish Year 12 and was wondering a few things About America. Keep in mind I have looked online and Don't know where to look as of this point in time.

Firstly, Americans drive on the right hand side of the road and Australians drive on the left hand side.

Would I have to do American tests to get an American license just to drive on the right hand side of the road? also, if I got pulled over would I go to Jail if I was driving with my Australian license?

Thanks for the help people!

Josh, if you have an Australian license, you do not need an American license to drive in the USA.

You need to visit LA it's absolutely awesome, go to the Magic Apple in Studio City while your there. It's the best magic shop that side of the Mississippi. Go to Las Vegas in Nevada and then head over to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. San Diego is beautiful and Chicago is pretty awesome apparently. New York is dynamic and go to Tannens (the best magic shop, that side of the Mississippi)
If you can get to the Caribbean, go!

Well, J&T, technically the Caribbean isn't part of the United States of America, just North America!

While an Australian license is adequate for driving on the road, you do need to know the rules of the road wherever you're driving.  In the US, ignorance of the law isn't considered an adequate legal defense!  Fortunately for you, the laws in most states are similar enough that you don't need to know every last state's picayune differences - pick the one or two states where you plan to do the most driving and obtain a drivers' handbook for those states.  Most state DMVs (Department of Motor Vehicles) will distribute them free in person and you can probably access PDFs of them online.

BTW: we don't just drive on the right, we also use the English system on the roads, with speed limits in miles per hours (MPH) instead of km/h.  All road signs are in miles as well.  Legally, we were supposed to switch to the metric system in the late 1980s but the law signed by President Ford was "conveniently" forgotten due to the cost of the conversion.  On the plus side for you, though, is that practically all current-issue cars in the US have sub-markings on the speedometer in km/h, allowing you to use it like a conversion scale.

What exactly did you have in mind for your grand trip, in terms of what you wanted to do, where you wanted to go, what your goal (or lack thereof) may be...?  Depending on your destination, it's entirely possible that a car may not even be necessary.

Trying out new things, new genders, I see.

In all seriousness:

NYC, Vegas, Orlando, San Diego, Los Angeles, anywhere in Texas, Grand Canyon, and then point to a random city in the midwest and go there (all identical).

How can you leave out places like San Francisco, Key West, CANADA...?  Toronto's great and it's barely over the border from New York, spitting distance from Niagara Falls.  Washington, DC is fine if you have a reason to go, like a good exhibit at the Smithsonian, the cherry blossom festival or something similar.  And I've heard that Vancouver's an awesome place to visit, if you guys happen to work your way through Washington State to check out Seattle (another awesome place to visit, I've been told).  And a trip through the US isn't complete without a visit to a blue city in a red state - Austin, Texas!

I gotta plug home...If you like low key, good BBQ and being able to walk around with a beer, check out Savannah Georgia. Its big on tourism so there is plenty of shopping, restaurants and stuff to see. Downside is the humidity is hell but its 15min from the ocean...also no card/magic shops. (anyone wanna team up and fix this?)

If you have the means check out the book "road trip usa" by Jamie Jensen. It has some great road attractions and killer routes that go coast to coast.

Don is right, check out Austin. It's a hippie town surrounded by red meat and guns. It's awesome!

On a big-ass road trip, it's ALWAYS best to have more than one driver.  Even if he is from somewhere that the water goes down the toilet backwards!  :))

Due to the peculiarities of the Earth's rotation and gravity, water swirls down drains clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere (including Australia)...  And they wonder why we're running out of scientists and scientific engineers...  :))

Well, there are b-school classes that could make the difference between a so-so career and a huge one.  As well as one or two colleges here that allow you to make your own degree - recently I heard of a graduate with a BA in Magic.  Or was it a BFA?  I forget...

Many working magicians will tell you that having college under your belt is a smart decision.

I saw an article about it somewhere.  Try a Google search.

There's also schooling that isn't college - investing in professional instruction through some of the more reputable schools of magic.  I heard McBride operates a school in Las Vegas.

A single Google search for "college degree in magic" turned up articles in the second and third links referencing this source article from the Ellusionist blog:

http://blog.ellusionist.com/indiana-student-nations-only-magic-major/

And there's a link in that post to a more detailed article about the man and his degree from his school's student-run newspaper.

http://idsnews.com/news/story.aspx?id=75169

You need to learn research skills if you're going to be a truly awesome magician...  :))

EDIT: there are more articles in the school's paper - search for the magician's name, Jordan Goldklang.
