What exactly is "Steampunk"?

It is the idea of what if everything was run on steam instead of nuclear power, that is just a short little description, google it if you want to know more.

It never actually happened, but it is an era. Have you seen the movie Wild Wild West with Will Smith?...like that

Hmm hopefully the Robo will have custom faces not just custom backs
Mystery is the basic appeal of magic. Once the secrets are known, the magician becomes a mere manipulator, an actor in a suspense drama which has little impact because the audience knows the ending in advance.

Ideally every new deck comin out would have custom courts...many don't. But if these are being put out by Bicycle themselves then I see no reason why they shouldn't.

I'm really looking forward to the Robocycle deck. The Steampunk not so much, seeing as, as it's been mentioned earlier, it just seems like a rip off of Lance T. Miller's Actuators. But I'll probably end up getting it anyway; it may be a rip off, but it doesn't look too bad.

I saw that too. I was getting all excited for the release. But I couldn't find anything about it being released on December 1st. So, I guess it'll be a later date.

Wow, I've missed a lot here.

As far as Theory 11 and the design goes, Alex mentioned (and I've seen elsewhere) that T11 is working more closely with the USPC these days.  T11 redesigned the bicyclecards.com website, the USPC now sells Guardians under their own brand name in an unlimited (or at least seems to be unlimited) release as part of their regular product line, and this deck is probably another such collaboration - T11 designed it, gave it to USPC (after collecting a fee, of course) and they're running with the ball.  That's my guess about why there's a T11 mention on the tuckbox.

What is steampunk, someone asked...  It helps to remember what cyberpunk is, first.  Early books written in the '80s by William Gibson, John Shirley, Bruce Sterling, Neal Stephenson and others posited a bleak future existence - a wide divide between the haves and the have-nots, the users and the used.  Technology abounds, but it's often repurposed to do things it was never meant to do (in the spirit of old-school hacking).  People living at the fringes of society, trying to claw their way through to survive to see another smog-covered sunset - that was cyberpunk.  The movie that most epitomizes it would be Blade Runner.  Fun things like genetic engineering and nanotech exist, but can go horribly wrong, oil is stupidly expensive, etc.

Now, imagine a scneario similar to this, but...  Imagine that Charles Babbage's Difference Engine (long thought to be the world's first mechanical computer, though it was never built until about a century later) actually gets invented, developed, improved upon - and a steam-powered computer revolution takes place in sync with the steam era, the reign of Britain's Queen Victoria, the American Reconstruction and the Industrial Revolution.  Countless possibilities can spring forth from these elements, and have from the numerous authors writing in the genre, one of the earliest being a collaboration by Gibson and Sterling titled, appropriately enough, "The Difference Engine".

Someone mentioned the TV program Wild, Wild West - that was probably the first steampunk fiction ever, a few decades before its time.  The movie, while terrible on many levels, also demonstrated some steampunk elements.  Airships rule the skies, steam-powered mechanical devices grow ever-more complex, even being developed into war machines by feuding European nations and American states.  Some novels, like "Boneshaker", even throw in an element of the macabre - a catastrophic accident testing a machine meant to drill for gold in Alaska releases a noxious gas that turns the residents of a West Coast port city into shambling corpse-like zombies.

The decks produced by USPCC are ... how should I say it, average. If it were to come out by theory11 or someone else, it would be a lot better. Ah! I might as well get it to complete my collection. I want to see how long I'm actually into this collecting thing.

So, if a deck is produced by USPC based on a design they got from Theory 11, is it still average?  Does Theory 11 releasing the same deck somehow make it better?

Doesn't theory11 provide more quality? In my terms, if they were to release a deck like this they would put a better coating, Egyptian papering, and just for the fun of it, light blue nylon fibers inside the tuck box.

Uh, not necessarily.

Coating - it's entirely possible that USPC is going to use Magic Finish.  It's the best they have and these decks are obviously targeted to the magic/cardist/collector market.

Paper - Egyptian paper?  Has ANYONE here ever heard of a deck being made with Egyptian paper?

Tuck box - Light blue fibers??   ???   Ye gods, man, WHY?  They've never done that before!

I really hope you're pulling my leg here.  I mean, look at the Guardians.  There's differences only in the tuck box and extra cards between the T11 v1 and v2 releases and the USPC version.  The paper and cards made from them are identical, as is the finish used on them.  How on earth could anyone come to the conclusion that one is in any way superior to the other in regards to appearance and performance of the cards themselves?  It's like the difference between two identical peppermint candies, one colored blue, the other colored white.  Same ingredients, slight difference in food coloring, identical flavor - neither is superior to the other except in the one category that matters least about a candy: light refractivity!

If USPC was incapable of making great cards that stand out above the crowd, would companies like T11, E, D&D, Blue Crown, CARC, David Blaine, Lance Miller, NY Magic Project, Card-Shark, Aether, etc. (even *shudder* Merz67) be banging on their doors, paying them to make decks for them?  Hell, off-the-shelf Tally-Ho cards are some of the most popular for cardists because of superior performance, design and quality - and magicians and serious card players are pretty fond of them as well for the same reasons.  Casinos the world over insist on getting Bee playing cards from USPC for their tables, and they're the most favored brand here in the States by casino owners by a huge margin - WPT uses them, and the CARC must love them, because it's practically all they have made except for the recent Pro Bikes.  Bicycle decks, for all that we love to knock them, are what got so many of us into cards in the first place - they're the world's most popular brand of playing card.  Aristocrats - they're some of the best cards on the market right now and they're a USPC original!  Elegant, well-made, fantastic stock...they're anything BUT average.

Sheesh...

I laugh so much when T11 says how great they're box is.... first off, the Infinity deck box is the best I've ever seen. And second, you can have a cool box, but you don't use the box! You use the cards. If you want to have an awesome box, make sure you have an awesome deck inside. Infinity deck is awesome all around

Well, they did mention in their Expose episode about some of the Monarch's specs, and I remember them mentioning about this.

Well, look at it this way: when a 2nd edition is released, it's a chance for anyone who missed the 1st edition to get the cards they wanted.  They usually only sell a second edition after the first is sold out.  It's annoying if you're a "completist" card collector, but if you're just performing or playing with them, it's a bonus.  It's hardly something to complain too hard about - unless you are that card collector I mentioned.

Think about it - Propaganda v2 is coming some time in the new year, in all likelihood.  We know it's coming, we just don't know when.  How many people do you know who loved the design and the Tally Ho stock?  When the new version hits T11, the only difference will likely be the deck box - or maybe they'll get all radical and upgrade the finish to Magic Finish.  Either way, people who missed v1 and are unwilling to spend $20-$30 in the aftermarket for a deck can get a brand new version at MSRP, somewhere below $10 a pack.

Sounds like a win-win for most people involved.  Seems annoying, but when you think about it, it really isn't a bad idea.

Doesn't theory11 provide more quality? In my terms, if they were to release a deck like this they would put a better coating, Egyptian papering, and just for the fun of it, light blue nylon fibers inside the tuck box.

Is it possible they were kidding during the Expose episode you saw?  Wouldn't be the first time someone at T11 cracked a joke...

Either way, their quality is USPC quality, because in the end, USPC MAKES THEM.  T11 just makes the design; the heavy lifting happens in Erlanger, KY.

Damn.... I was expecting the Robocycle to look a little better. I really don't like that design and I won't be buying any.

But is there a link to buy them?

Yeah I'm glad the pricing isn't insane too. I'm not a huge fan of the court cards but I do like the box. I'm sure I'll get some of these eventually for my collection. I'm in no rush though really
