Hello, I've uploaded another deck review - did two of them in two days!
This is my video review for the Bohemia deck by Uusi.  (ps. I like the deck very much.)   :)

Please feel free to comment and make suggestions!

Note: Even though the kickstarter project is over, these decks are still available for purchase from Uusi's website, at http://www.uusi.us.

  • I like birds.

  • Kickstarter:
Very nice review! Sweet LePaul spread.
I also love the "Deck in Action" part. I wish more reviewers would showcase the deck's performance more. The length was really nice too. I don't want to sit through 9 minutes of some schmo babbling on about the deck. I'd like to hear a little more background and info on the deck though. A slightly more thorough overview of the case and face designs would have been nice too.
Overall: 8.5/10

Nice job!
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Thanks for the feedback.  I do appreciate it.  Any suggestions will help me make the reviews better.  Glad you like my Le'Paul Spread too... I've been working on it for a while now.  First saw deckreview do his with SeaWorld cards a year or so back and was inspired by his insanely-perfect spread.

Also happy to hear you appreciate the shortness of the video - keeping it brief and to the point was one of my main goals.  I think you are right I could have gone into more detail about the style of art used on the backs and talking about the designer Uusi some too.  (Another user on here suggested adding a voice-over to the "cards in action" section, so I might try that to avoid making the video too long.)  BTW... there is more info about the deck on the kickstarter page here if you are interested here:  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1244376122/bohemia-playing-cards-deck .... although you are probably already aware of this.

I'll keep what you said about the tuck box in mind too.  I was purposefully trying to keep it brief in this area, because I've been bored before when watching some videos talking too much about the box......   but I think it might just be a personal preference.....  I really don't care too much about the tuck box.  I figure if I were doing a trick for someone, their attention would be on the cards themselves.... not the box.  (Although given... practically every card trick I have performed for a layman is with a normal Bicycle deck of cards.... I'm afraid of them messing up my good cards with their sweaty, hot, layman hands.)

I was that user!  I was also a consultant with Uusi on this project - my name appears in the credits near the bottom of the Kickstarter project page.

I have never been so bored with a deck review than when the reviewer is very carefully reading nearly every bit of print on the box, then holding it up to the camera, waiting for the autofocus to kick in, then letting us see/read it ourselves.  Why on this Earth would you bother reading it?  Am I suddenly illiterate?  And the lack of editing is appalling.  Just show me the blasted thing, nice, sharp and FAST, and move on.  It makes me want to smack the reviewer "Gibbs-style" in the back of the head to get him going...

Just as I suggested for the "action" sequence to have voice-over, the deck tuck box sequence can be as simple as "And here's the box..." where you cut away to still-image close-ups of the box sides and any other interesting features about it, letting the viewer simply see and read them while you discuss something else about the cards, perhaps rejoining the "show and not tell" part when hitting on something particularly interesting, like a cool foil design, a unique deck seal or a Latin phrase that you can translate for your viewers.

Don, thanks again for your constructive feedback.  It gives me a lot to think about when considering how to make my next video.  (p.s.  I currently have Dan & Dave's Ultimate Deck as well as all of the new versions of Smoke & Mirrors sitting on my counter... making me feel very guilty about not having created a video review for them yet!  But, that is life... and I have some other pressing things I need to get done first before I review those.)

That's cool you were a consultant on the Bohemia Deck project.  Can you share some about how you were involved and what it was like?  Would love to hear about it.  One thing I was surprised to notice recently about the deck is that depending on how wide or narrow I make my thumb fan, it creates a different appearance.  The reason for this I believe is due to the wavy lines on the back design... and how much (or which part) of the wavy line is visible.  Pretty awesome deck.

FFN - I probably should have made this clearer, but I was speaking of video reviews in general, not yours in particular.  I haven't even seen yours!  When I'm at work, the computer I use has video playback disabled.

I gave them some tips for improved usability, such as not extending the wavy lines past the edge of the card.  I wrote a fair amount of the copy for their Kickstarter, and assisted with figuring out what the tiers would cost as well as tracking add-ons.  I built a spreadsheet for them which simplified the entire reward/add-on tracking process.

The bulk of the work was theirs, especially getting featured in design blogs - it made the deck really take off.  I also noticed a problem in the making and helped them solve it - mid-way through the fundraising they became fully committed for the entire print run of 3,500 and needed a solution, so I suggested creating the second deck in the same basic design, same faces, just a different-colored back.  It also allowed them to release more uncut sheets, which were in high demand.

Thanks for sharing.  That's very interesting.  Glad the wavy lines didn't go all the way to the edge of the deck too!  :)

I got my deck and I really love how the designs are all hand painted. The red and blue combi works really well and gives the deck appealing look. And the texture of the deck box is also unique.
