Some might like the artwork on this one, but it's not my personal taste.  It reminds me of doodles people draw on napkins and the backs of envelopes.

What do you folks think?

I think the guy is genuine but he has the weight of the market against him and he doesn't even know it.  The worst part is that he claims no one is doing it currently and we have the Curator Deck.  I feel bad for the guy.

He doesn't sound like an idiot on the topic, either.  I get the feeling he's a collector of vintage decks but has insufficient knowledge of modern custom decks.

If you are doing transformation decks, I honestly feel bad for you. The Curator and Clipped Wings are just TOO good and have such a unique approach to the art.

Ditto

I have seen this form of art before... in the 70's.  Not that i can remember the 70's (who can).  I have some "art" similar to this that my parents insisted I "loved" as a kid.  They mistook my looking for nudity in the "art" drawings as an emotional affectation.  (<~ this is not a typo, I do not mean affection)

He mentioned in his video that he hand-drew the cards before realizing he would make a deck of them - he basically colored in an existing deck, probably a pack of Bikes or Bees.  In his doodling zeal, he colored in some spaces, like pips and even indices, to the point of invisibility.  He plans to hire a computer graphics artist to clean the art and make the missing elements visible again.

Hello Discourse members,

Thank you for posting my deck and thanks for your honest first impressions. I'd like to share a little information about myself and this deck in particular. I only discovered transformation playing cards 5 years ago. Since then I've collected 38 transformation and semi-transformation decks. I wasn't aware of your card forum or United Cardists. But a google search turned up discussions on both about my deck, so I'm glad I found you.

Apparently I am a little out of touch with the market, as I was unaware of The Curator deck or the unpublished Clipped Wings deck. The Curator hasn't appeared on eBay yet, and that's been my primary source of decks. I thought there hadn’t been any new true transformation decks since 2006’s “Pips in Pictures” by Jenny Gaudion, from the UK, or the “State by State Transformation Deck” by Wendy Cipolla. But to be fair, while many of the cards in Mr. Jose’s decks are transformations, he has moved the pips around in some of the cards or changed their orientation, which makes it is really a semi-transformation deck in my book. That makes the images no less breathtakingly beautiful, but they aren’t “pure transformation decks.”

Additionally, Mr. Jose also sometimes just ignores some of the pips on the cards, so they're just sort of hanging in space. I applied a more rigorous standard to my deck, requiring me to use all of the pips on each card. (I'll grant you that the 7 of spades was a bit of a stretch, but I use the edges of the pips to outline portions of my drawing, so it still (barely) qualifies.

And yes, I bought a deck of cards from Walmart and drew right on them. At the time I created this deck, I was just enjoying the challenge of trying to complete 54 works of art on tiny canvases only 2.5 inches by 3.5 inches and the challenge of using all the pips. It was only after finishing the 40 numbered cards and showing them around that people suggested I look into publishing. So, I will have to restore the indexes on some of the cards, but that's not a big deal. That way they can be used for traditional card games as well as the card games I've created for this type of deck.

Finally, I'm a published cartoonist with over 30 cartoons in print. Our artwork does look like doodles, and I went for that look with the five of clubs, but if you look more closely at the drawings, you will see the nuances that you won't find on many napkin drawings. But it's all a matter of taste, and cartoonists are frequently looked down upon by "serious artists." Such is our fate.

So, I thank you for the discourse, and I will close by asking you to consider backing this project. It IS a new true transformation deck and one that uses ALL of the pips on each card. And I don't think we've seen one of those since 2006. If you have, please share that information with me, as I'd love to add it to my collection (as I did with The Curator deck a few days ago).

At first glance, I didn't care for them. Then took the time to LOOK again, must say, I would buy the deck the way it is now. The 3 and 2 of clubs look as if they came from the mind of Tim Burton. I would like to see the back for something like this.

Hi Dave,

Welcome to the Discourse! Your collection of transformation decks is impressive, and thank you for adding my deck to your collection :)

Yes, you're completely right that my decks are semi-transformation by definition. Even I don't describe my work as pure transformation decks.

My intention has always been to present playing cards as I envision them. That intention dictates what I create.

I wish you a lot of success with your deck, and the world can never have too many transformation decks :) Thank you for creating and sharing yours.

Hi Other Look and Emmanuel,

Thank you both for your kind words. Emmanuel, I'm sorry if I came across as a little defensive in my comments, but after reading some comments here and at United Cardists, I felt that I needed to make the distinction between my deck and yours. I LOVE your artwork, the cleverness of your ideas and the beautiful execution of your paper cutting. And your Dodo Joker absolutely knocked me out! The bar is so high, I can hardly see it from here. So, I have no criticism of what you do and envision. It is truly remarkable. I do hope you publish the Clipped Wings as a deck some day. If you do, please let me know!

So thanks for the welcome, folks. I'll do my best to complete my deck in style.

No worries, Dave. The cardistry community is VERY passionate about decks, and every designer has had to defend their work in some kind of capacity. I myself am in awe of vintage transformation decks since they set the bar so high. There is support and love for every deck out there, and your EclecDeck is no exception :)

Thanks, Emmanuel.

But TOL, this post is for you. Tim Burton? Thank you so much! That 2 of clubs is special to me since it was my first attempt (and the first draft). And thanks for calling out that three. I was pretty happy when the design for her mantilla came to me. Thanks for sharing your thoughts  and for that second look.

Dave (DUFF),

Allow me to welcome you to this forum - I invite you to stick around, check out some of our other topics and perhaps become an active participant.  It's a pleasure to have deck artists and designers among our ranks.

While this deck may not be to my personal tastes, I fully recognize that there's a place for it in the vast spectrum of decks in the marketplace.  I'm open enough to realize that just because I don't like it personally, that doesn't mean there's no place for it in this world!  And believe me when I say I'd rather have this deck over all too many of the other decks I've been seeing recently, both on and off of Kickstarter!

I can see how in certain circles that cartoon artists would get the short end of the art world stick - and the art world suffers for that.  But to the people who participate here, if a deck of cards is beautiful, it doesn't matter if the original medium is a cartoon, an oil painting, pieces of clipped paper, a bunch of ones and zeroes in a computer, what have you - all we see is a beautiful deck of cards.  The humbleness or grandiosity of its origins make for an interesting back story, not whether we think the deck is "worthy".

In short, I think you're in the right place!

Thought about backing this one but it just did not catch my attention.  Love the transformed decks of all styles.

@Emmanuel just went to your site and bought it.  Will be a great addition to my collection.
